Think You Know George Zimmerman? This New Timeline and Profile Could Change the Perception (and the Case)

When the Trayvon Martin case first started garnering national attention, there were many that thought they knew who George Zimmerman was: an overzealous racist with a vendetta against young black men who was on a mission to assert power with his gun. But then little details started emerging, such as pictures of Zimmerman’s bloody head that could bolster his self-defense claim; CNN even backtracked and said the tape it once suggested showed Zimmerman uttering a racist slur was actually him most likely saying it was “cold.”
And now, Reuters has put together a detailed profile of Zimmerman that seems to suggest he was a concerned citizen that was trying to help fix his community and those in it reeling from recent crime. He was a compassionate neighbor, it seems, not a lunatic with a gun.
“During the time Zimmerman was in hiding, his detractors defined him as a vigilante who had decided Martin was suspicious merely because he was black,” Reuters reports. “After Zimmerman was finally arrested on a charge of second-degree murder more than six weeks after the shooting, prosecutors portrayed him as a violent and angry man who disregarded authority by pursuing the 17-year-old.
“But a more nuanced portrait of Zimmerman has emerged from a Reuters investigation into Zimmerman’s past and a series of incidents in the community in the months preceding the Martin shooting.” [Emphasis added]
So what does it show? For starters, it was an animal control officer who told Zimmerman he should get a gun after a pit bull was menacing him and his wife. His friends, however, never even knew he had a firemarm until about two months ago. And, Reuters says, “He was raised in a racially integrated household and himself has black roots through an Afro-Peruvian great-grandfather – the father of the maternal grandmother who helped raise him.”
Business Insider put together some chronological bullet points highlighting the article’s most important points:
•Zimmerman grew up in a mixed-race household •He was an altar boy at his Caltholic church from age 7-17 •He is bilingual •After he finished high school, he studied for and got an insurance license •In 2004, Zimmerman and a black friend opened an Allstate insurance office (which soon failed) •Zimmerman’s 2005 arrest for “resisting arrest, violence, and battery of an officer” occurred after he shoved an under-cover alcohol control agent at a bar when the agent was trying to arrest an underage friend of his •Zimmerman married his wife, Shellie, in 2007. They rented a house in Twin Lakes. Twin Lakes is about 50% white, 20% Hispanic, and 20% black. •In 2009, Zimmerman enrolled in Seminole State College •In the fall of 2009, a pit bull broke free twice and once cornered Shellie in the Zimmermans’ yard. She hid in a room upstairs and called the police. When the police arrived, the two men, who had been trying to take a TV, fled. One of them ran through the Zimmermans’ yard. •After the break-in, George Zimmerman stopped by the Bertalans and gave Olivia a card with his name and number on it. He told her to visit his wife Shellie if she felt unsafe. •The police recommended that Bertalan get a dog. She moved away instead. Zimmerman got a second dog–a Rottweiler. •In September, several concerned residents of the neighborhood, including Zimmerman, asked the neighborhood association to create a neighborhood watch. Zimmerman was asked to run it. •In the next month, two more houses in the neighborhood were robbed. •A community newsletter reminded residents to report any crimes to the police and then call “George Zimmerman, our captain.” •On February 2, 2012, Zimmerman spotted a young black man looking into the windows of a neighbor’s empty house. He called the police and said “I don‘t know what he’s doing. I don’t want to approach him, personally.” The police sent a car, but by the time they arrived, the man was gone. •On February 6th, another house was burglarized. Witnesses said two of the robbers were black teenagers. One, who had prior burglary convictions, was soon caught with a laptop stolen from the house. •Two weeks later, Zimmerman spotted Travyon Martin and called the police. The last time he had done this, the suspect got away. This time, he disregarded police instructions and followed. A few minutes later, Martin was dead.
Is it possible that Zimmerman is an angry racist? It is. But as Business Insider wonders, “doesn’t it make you feel a bit differently about Zimmerman?”

Exactly. Both just as sick as the other. Growing up in Detroit, and now living near northern Idaho (racist central ), seeing both sides of the fences just shows the accumulated shat filled yards that both wallow in.
Very interesting read about Zimmerman there loafer. I have not tried to cast a judgement on either party. But, the read definately tells the story of the accused. I ain't never been no altar boy.

I want to preface this that I NOT a Raciest. I am just very fed up, that people of other raises immigrating to the country get special privileges, special government funding and are allowed to look down at the white population and treat us as 2nd class. I imagine this happens in the USA a bit too. IN Canada our immigration laws are much more lax. Basically here, they show up, sign some papers, government then gives them welfare and if they don't have family to stay with the government arranges low cost housing for them, as well as medical.
All while me needed $26,000 in dental work, and the government says I am sole, because teeth are deemed cosmetic and not a medical condition.

(Martin I mean) If Martin was beating on Zimmerman as bad as it sounds repeatedly smashing Zimmerman's head into the concrete, your damn right if I had a gun, I would have blown Martins head off. If my safety is in jeopardy by a suspected burglar the burglar attacks me. I say its totally justified. Even if he was not a burglar, why was he so violent to beat on Zimmerman. If there was a physical altercation, that would have given ample time for Martin to explain that he was just walking home, or at the very least wait for the cops to get there hopefully before the fist fight started.
Now on to the whole double standard. Locally in BC we have Gay Pride Parades,Black Pride Parades seem to be everywhere, Hindu Pride Parades, heck you name they are everywhere and they are deemed to be fine. However if someone wanted a "White Pride" Parade The crap would hit the fan Honestly I have proud of my Swedish and French background. I was born in Canada and I am really proud of what colour I am.
Lets reverse this Martin case. Lets say Zimmerman was the black guy, and shot some off colour guy that was beating him. It would be an open and shut case of self defense. All these pro black community's would be standing up saying it was self defense and the guy would probably get a minor slap on the wrist.
I am not a racist personally, however I HATE the double standards, the black people are allowed to trash, insult and say what they want against while people, but if a white person even uses the N word, All hell breaks loose. Everyone is allowed to speak there opinion, except the white people. (side not, Any Native American that is working in this country and not being supported off Government cheques each month is the only race in this country that can and should be allowed to stand up and speak there mind. But only if they are not living off the government money.
I like all people, got lots of friends that are Asian, and Hawaiian, honestly I have not seen or spoke to a Black person in years. (we live in an area where most immigrants are ether Asian / or East Indian (ya know the Turbine guys. It does piss me off that due to Canada's lax immigrant ion that they can get off the boat go straight to a welfare off ice and start collecting in an income. Then get a buddy to start up a store, work at the store under the table and keep collecting welfare and housing subsidy's. So all the money they get can go to fancy cars and stuff. I've not heard the term "misrepresented" in any of the newscasts. The family of Mr. Martin has requested that the bail amount be reviewed in light of the funds that have been raised through donations to the Zimmerman website. The funds are being held in a trust fund under the control of Zimmerman's lawyer.

I heard the Martin family and their lawyer are stomping their feet because they want his bail revoked because he claimed he didnt have any money and therefore the judge made too low of a bail. Then Zimmermans own lawyer released that his website took in $205,000 . He also stated that money is not available to Zimmerman at all, its only available to his defense attorneys to finance his legal fees. No matter if thats true or not, a judge gets to make his decision on bail and no one else. Ive heard of murder charges getting $10 million bail and also just the accused's own recognizance (as in $0). Judges generally base the amount on the likelihood and/or ability to flee...not how much money they have in the bank.

Very well put... I understand that the white race has in the past had treated Blacks in a very crude and dispicable manner But I really cant stand how it is still being taken out on us.. I remeber I was told that the white race owes a debt to them as to what happend during slavery... No one owes anyone anything as far as that mater is concerned due to the fact they wernt put through it.. They were born into a free country wityh just as much opertunity as every other american citizen to make something of them selvs.. Another thing that really urks my chain is America's affirmitive action clause. The fact that an Employer is required to hire or employ a certin amount of minority's in a given time.. I personaly think thats wrong If Myself and a black man were applying for the same job and I were more qualifyed for the posistion but lost it due to afirmitive action and I found out about it That would really piss me off because it becomes a double standered for discrimination.. I worked as a security guard and i had a co-worker black american female.. we were on the topic of immagration Legal and Illegal one day and She bought up a very good point... Just about everyone who ever came to this country from another had to deal with some kind of hardship before they established them selfs here.. Blacks had slavery Jews irish polish italian had trouble getting jobs and were singled out from everyone else, aisans were singled out here during WW2 alsong with the veitnmese during nam.. And these days illegal immagrints are almost being welcomed into our country with open arms... Sure you can take our jobs without taxation... Sure We'll take care of you mediclly.. Sure You can marry into an american family for citizenship. Sure We'll teach your kids in our school system... Its all Bullsh*t if you ask me...

I like people.....period.( not sayin' you don't, Tony ) During a converstation with people of any color, if they decide to "color" themselves then so be it. Till then, I see people as people.....that's it. Why was everyone "painted" different? I heard on the news the other night that during the bail hearings Zimmerman and family testified he was indigent and he disclosed the money raised to his lawyer after the bail was set.

The idea of genetic superiority and an elite class were British ideas. They exported this throughout the world. They wrote the doctrine on colonialism and, of course, that is how America got started. We all came over here, to America, then because we hated British rule, fought, kicked them out, and then created our own set of rules. These rules, founded by the genius of America's founding fathers is what ended slavery, gave rights and freedom to everyone. It just took a while to institute but it was always there in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Dr. King knew this and used the courts and passive resistance to have these ideals enforced. The genius of these doctrines should never be trivialized.
A little off the subject, but because British rule was so oppressive, the colonist knew and understood the importance of freedom. We, having lived so long being free, we don't really have anything to compare it to except crazy reports we see in the news of places and people who are oppressed. Because of this we are at risk of falling more toward, or accepting, oppressive governments. Freedom, total freedom, is just as scary as a complete dictatorship. Just remember when you graduated high school, turned 18, and found out you had to support yourself, find a place to live, and pay for your own food!! Sooo much easier to have someone do that for you!!

If your here illegally than your screwed but you should not have been here in the 1st place.. I know Canada does things differently but still it seems like its working up there..
Another little thing i was thinking of was this.. Not that they should be given a hard time of anything but.. I worked as a security guard and i had a co-worker black American female.. we were on the topic of immigration Legal and Illegal one day and She bought up a very good point... Just about everyone who ever came to this country from another had to deal with some kind of hardship before they established them selfs here.. Blacks had slavery Jews Irish polish Italian had trouble getting jobs and were singled out from everyone else, Asians were singled out here during WW2 along with the Vietnamese during nam.. And these days illegal immigrants are almost being welcomed into our country with open arms... Sure you can take our jobs without taxation... Sure We'll take care of you medically.. Sure You can marry into an American family for citizenship. Sure We'll teach your kids in our school system... Its all Bullsh*t if you ask me...

Something like 30 days hard labour then deportation, and deportation not to "just across the boarder" but drop them 500 miles south of the boarder. Not torture, but just enough inconvenience to them to make them think twice about trying to sneak across.

I think they should be harsher than that.. I personally think the ones caught sumuggeling drugs and things of that nature numerous times should be tried for exicution.. and same with repete illegal crossings... you put a couple of them out they will deffietley tink twice about comming back here... I know its harsh but sometimes a line must be crossed to show people that come here illegally and dont want to take the proper steps to become legal american citizens that things just dont work like that.
What a lot of people dont understand is when illegal imagrints come here from mexico to work is there not here because its a better place.. There hear because the american dollar here is worth about 3 dollars in mexico. They work up here for so long either until there caught or want to go back home.. While working here they make all the money they can keep just enough to live up here this is why you see a lot of them living in one small house or using one car between 10 people so in splitting things like rent food etc they save money and They send a good amount of what they make back to there familys to live/save So they can make a better life for them selves back in there home country when they finally move back or get deported. I remember a girl I used to date started dating what I found out was an illegal imagrint Over the years they were seeing each other he knocked her up 3 times and just about a year ago he got caught and deported.. Now she is taking care of 3 kids on a single income without child support for them...

It's a terribly written piece IMO.
If the assault WAS "for Trayvon" as you suggest, I doubt you'd find many to support it no matter what their race or location.

Nowhere did I say it was for him. Someone on twitter suggested that it should be done for him. So in there mind it was ok. Maybe I wasn't clear enough. I'm sure I'll take flack for this but the best line is the last line

Exactly what I was thinking. From the sounds of things, your Democrats are exactly like our New Democrats up here in Canada who fight tooth and nail to stimy any sort of legislation calling for stricter penalties for repeat criminals or violent offenders. According to them, it is NEVER the criminals fault. Rather, it is always some other factor that gets blamed. Blame the handgun for enticing the person to the crime, blame our ancestors for whatever wrong might have happened to their ancestors, blame society for forcing the person to commit the crime. Same story over and over from the left - it is not the criminals fault. And lo and behold, who do you think the criminals and other individials lacking any semblance of scruples vote for? The NDP or the Liberal party. In fact, the Liberals even introduced legislation allowing their supporters that ended up behind bars were still allowed to vote for them back in 2004. Any one else think it is kind of screwed up how you can end up behind bars, and still have a say in who forms the government?
