Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the news media knew it was happening until Trump himself started releasing his own statements about it to the media from New Jersey or New York or wherever he was. Since everything else about it was low key, I really cannot imagine that anyone at DOJ gave a thought to the Nixon resignation anniversary, or was likely even aware of it.

Attorney General Merrick Garland revealed Thursday that he “personally approved” requesting the search warrant that triggered Monday’s unprecedented raid on the Florida home of former President Donald Trump and revealed the Justice Department had asked a federal magistrate judge to unseal copies of the warrant — if Trump and his legal team do not object.
