How is it that something like this even makes the news? How did these people run an empire?

quote

A heavily pregnant mother has spoken of her fear after workmen found live ammunition in the garden of her Worksop home.

Workmen from Kier Homes were at the house in Yeoman Close yesterday (Thursday) to replace a fence panel, but had to abandon their work after discovering a bullet in the garden.

The mother-of-three, who did not wish to be named, is now worried about what else could be hidden in the ground.

The 26-year-old said: “The workmen were there to replace a fence panel which had been blown down in the high winds.”

“They knocked on the door and told me they were phoning the police. They said they had found live ammunition.”

“I couldn’t believe it. I’ve got to keep the kids out of the garden until it is removed.”

“I’m worried what else could be there.”

She added that police had been called twice about the bullet, but no-one has yet been to remove it.

Notts Police confirmed they were called at 2.25pm on Wednesday 5th February after the discovery of an item in a Manton garden.

A spokesman said officers had now been and recovered the bullet.

“The caller believed it may have been a live bullet. Control room inspectors are trained to make an assessment of risk, based on the details known at the time,” said the spokesman.

“A bullet is not an explosive device and does not pose an immediate danger to the public unless loaded into a gun, which was not the case here.”

“The force control room receives in excess of 1,000 calls from the public every day, which range from threats to kill to armed robberies and assaults.”

“We have a limited amount of police officers to attend incidents and our resources have to be deployed to the most serious and urgent incidents.”

Edit to add : I think I would be more concerned with the battery in the garden then the ammo.

I've got a couple friends from the UK... They don't understand why anybody would "need" a gun. My reply, "this is America, 'need' usually doesn't apply. Those are taken care of."

Not like a bullet alone is going to do anything anyway.

If that pregnant woman knew how many billions of colostirid spores were lurking in that little square of soil she'd poop her knickers.

Isnt that other thing a battery? I hear those are bad for the environment and supposed to be recycled. Maybe these folks need to re-examine their priorities.

You guys now realize how different the mindset is regarding guns (if this isn't a joke of some sort)?

Until quite recently police officers in the UK didn't carry guns and still most don't. People are just not that afraid... I guess it had something to do with most criminals not carrying guns, either, so the public and the police feel they don't need to be armed.

In this respect, the US is the odd one out among developed nations not the other way around.

Same here, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary starting carrying sidearms about 15 years back. Unfortunate IMO.

It is clearly because the USA is exporting murder to these otherwise completely peaceful people.

I am always armed when I leave my home, does that make me afraid? My car has seatbelts too, but that doesn't mean every time I get behind the wheel and buckle up I'm afraid I'm going to crash.

Both serve the same purpose. I'll probably never use (and hope I never have to use) my pistol in self defense, or my seat belts for self protection. BUT in the rare case something happens, my chances and the chances of my family's survival are increased.

As for someone who is unfamiliar enough with ammunition to call the police, sure Ill give them the benefit of the doubt that they have probably been brainwashed all of their life to think guns = bad so when they see ammunition, they think oh noes! Bad. But for an article and picture to be taken.... this is satire poking fun at England's gun laws.

Most countries teach their officers to actually talk to people instead of just running up and threatening them and/or assaulting them.

It's not about being afraid, it's about being prepared and aware that the real world its fu#$ing dangerous. I bet the young Brit soldier that got his head cut off in front of a crowd of people wished someone had a gun. But I guess he didn't have a need for a gun did he?

Rationalize it all you want... you are both afraid.

I'm not questioning your courage, but I am questioning the quality of your social environment.

I wonder how many other "civilized" countries there are which have citizens who believe they need to be armed to go to the supermarket.

IMO it's a very sad commentary on how badly the situation has apparently de-volved down there.

You're correct, insofar as it's fear that causes you to keep a spare tire in your car.
A very sad commentary on Canadian transportation indeed.

Please show proof that any of us here are "afraid".

Do you buckle your seat belt because you are scared or because it just makes good sense to be prepared?
Wash your vegetables because you are frightened or simply to ensure safe food intake?
Do you run a good anti-virus program out of fear or simply to keep your data safe and secure--tremble in your boots if it isn't updated when you go online?
The answer to all the above is no.

The myth that Americans are afraid to leave their homes unarmed is nothing more than a deflection cooked up by "anti-gun" zealots in a failed effort to somehow embarrass those who want to keep their 2nd amendment rights intact.

Once an idiot acquaintance tossed a handful of .22 shells in a campfire. The lead stayed there but the brass flew in every direction, each one humming a different tune.

I think one of fears the homeowner had was due to the fact that every now and then in England someone digging, whether with a shovel or heavy equipment, will run across an unexploded German bomb from World War II that still has the potential to detonate.

Don, your "examples" don't make any sense to me. Comparing wearing seat belts etc to being prepared to shoot someone is... odd.

Seems to me that some of you are simply so immersed in the gun culture that to you it seems "normal".

IMO, this isn't normal in the "civilized" world... or necessary.

You can't be serious? You're comparing locking doors at night to carrrying a firearm to go shopping?

At the nearest border crossing to me, there's a monument called Peach Arch. On the US side of the monument it states... "Children of a common mother". Somewhere along the line, we seem to have diverged. I'm truly sorry that's occurred.

Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. We really don't worry about it as much here. Some places are safer than others, but if someone breaks in to your house up here, unlikely that they are armed. Americans live with the wild west mentality...no point trying to explain it to you...you'll never get that much of the civilized world is so much safer than the US. I'm not saying you shouldn't have weapons to protect yourself...just please understand that much of the rest of the world lives fine without needing them. This has nothing to do with our rights being taken away from us...I am free to own a gun if I want one...just a pointless thing to own here, unless I like to go hunting.

Ever hear of Charles Whitman? How about Lee Harvey Oswald or the DC sniper? It does happen so don't play it off as an impossible event. I've moved out of the country and into the city and its violent here. People always getting shot. Its mostly in the hood, but that doesn't mean it will stay in the hood. Its only about a mile from my side of the tracks to the bad side literally! I'm just not ready to play the chance game with my life and that of my family. Especially when I can stack the deck in my favor. You super civilized non gun needing folks have a safe and prosperous life

You forgot to add at the end: AGAIN, SAVE THEIR ASSES AGAIN. Unarmed sheep are easy pickings for the Wolves/ SS.....ETC. Apparently our German friend here forgot a certain part of history Were a whole bunch of people were systematically disarmed for their own good than tossed into ovens and those o so comfy gas showers and mass graves. Man I usually stay out of these kind of threads but dang the stupid burns to a point here I have to say something. History is destine to repeat itself if it is left to do so.

An acquaintance of mine (met through a mutual friend) just moved back to the states from one of those anti-gun nations and talked about not understanding the point... She lives in a nice area not far from some not-so-nice neighborhoods.

Some immoral, feckless, waste of burden on his mother's womb... broke into her place and tried to have his way, beating the hell out of her in the process. A week later, she was shopping for things that go bang. It's not the first time I've had a friend go through something similar. There are too many shitty people in the world to trust so blindly.

I have double dead-bolts on all my doors and bars on my windows. And yes, I lock my doors.

Tomorrow I'm crossing into the States to pick up some '88 Fiero alignment tools. I also plan to check out the Walmart in Bellingham, Washington. Am I risking my life by not packing a rod?

Especially when crossing the border.

I can't speak for the other "foreigners", but I have no problem if you want a closet full of guns.

And I have no problem if you want them for protection from your own government.

I'm simply saying it's freakin' awful that it's too dangerous down there to go buy milk and bread without packing a gun.

This is really easy to sum up for our friend up north, a little famous quote although not necessarily said by Isoroku Yamamoto it still holds truth to its saying. "You cannot invade the mainland United States, There would be a rifle behind every blade of grass" The inspiring truth behind this quote is just that the truth behind it. As it were that fear not only protected the USA but the rest of North America. History is fun lets try and learn it a bit.

No need to get catty.

There are plenty of guns up here. We just don't feel the need to take them to the supermarket with us.

And who said that was the case? There are plenty of people who don't own guns, even in the deep south.

Doesn't mean people shouldn't know how to use one or should be scared of an inanimate object.
