While you all are back slapping about cupons.. Suzzie... Michelle... Danielle... I will hasten to point out that even though you get a small price break on selected items you are still paying more for the same product. AND prices have gone up a good 50c across the board since this article.
Apparently, you don't shop at a grocer.
Coupons are NOT a SMALL PRICE BREAK. Sandi can save up to $15 every time she goes to the store without trying that hard if she remembers her coupons.
You can deride me by calling me names for being a smarter shopper than you are whenever you like, Bill, doesn't phase me a bit. Not spending money is how you get to keep it.

Well Cindy knows that even though she saved 15 dollars this week on food she still spent 25 more than last week with no coupons.
Yeah, I see. You are attempting to apply rocket science to explain to everyone that food prices haven increased any over the last few months by taking a set of pinking sheers to your sunday paper that you are now by endowed with some advance double top secret formula created by space aliens from the planet Trikdopegnathead that you are spending less for food.

John, your earlier posts are pretty much right on. Buying whats on sale this week is the way to go. Steaks $8.99 a pound? No steaks this week! Within a couple of weeks, one of the stores will have them @ 4.99-5.99. In the meantime, enjoy a chicken, or some pork chops. Or fish. Or go meatless once in a while. And when something is on sale, buy more than you need this week, and freeze some for later. Supermarket vegetables tend to cost more and be of poorer quality than you can get at a produce market, flea market, or roadside stand. 2 weeks ago, on a trip to south Georgia, we picked an overflowing 5 gal bucket of delicious vine ripened tomatoes for $8. And we ate 4 or 5 apiece while we picked for a Free lunch!
Re: 84 Bills post, Florida stores don't double or triple coupons anymore. And Publix tends to be a bit pricier than other supermarkets. But not by much, except for meat.

Apparently, you dont know your ass from third base when it comes to where I shop.
And if you think that coupons only give you a small price break then you're ignorant of how they work and need instruction. Sorry, I don't have the time. Go find a 3rd grader to explain the concept to you.

Who's Cindy? If you're talking about Sandi, my wife, then you'd be wrong. She's spending about the same as she has been all year. Of course, she knows how to shop, and she didn't shop without coupons last week. Or the week before that. Or the week before that.

Only to you would it be considered rocket science to shop wisely, watch the ads, and use the coupons. I never said food wasn't more expensive than it used to be. Guess what, 5 years from now it will be more expensive yet. So will clothes, cars, school supplies, cleaning products, and even the cost of your anti psychotic medications.
Such is life. Get used to it or leave it, matters not to me.

That's an advantage of living in the south or southern CA, you have roadside stands and such pretty much year round. I wish we did. We have farmer's markets here, but only during the summer months, so during the winter we don't get that much in the way of fresh fruit. We do buy and freeze a lot of vegetables from the farmer's markets during the summer. We also buy local honey, it helps a LOT with allergies. I never believed it until I started being allergic to some pollens. We do buy quite a bit of fruit from our local kids that are in FFA in high school because that's their annual fund raiser.
Is there some law in FL that won't allow double and triple coupons? If not, and they all quit, that's odd. It's a big draw for the Dillon's chain around here and one of the reasons they do well in spite of the WalMart "Supercenters" that seem to be everywhere.

I usually hit the Shop N Bag myself. Mostly processed or enriched junk but you can get a case of ramen salt o noodles for 5 bucks.
It's expensive to get the "more" healthy food but food is food. WD is the place to go for meats... still out of my range more often than not. Frozen chicken breasts have gotten cost prohibitive even at the bag. A three pound bag went from 5.99 to 7.99 at publix cant even touch 3 pounds of that stuff unless that all I want for the week.

Why in the world would you buy instant mashed potatoes???????????
AAAAACCCCCKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!
I guess if it's all I had, I'd eat it, but that would be the only way. It takes less than a minute to peel a potato and by the time the rest of the meal is cooked, the potatoes will be done.
The people are complaining about the increase in food prices and you are telling them to be smart and clip coupons. Regardless of your attempts to hide the truth from them and blame it all on their spending habits they are still spending MORE on food.
Similar concept. Funny how you support taking what you can get as cheaply as you can get out of one side of your face then out of the other down talk those who cant afford to buy a weeks worth of food with a stupid coupon.. as if a 3.50 sunday paper just falls from the sky
Take what they give you a price break on and go eat. Smart
Got to the pantry and you get what they give you and go eat. Leach.

Instant mashed isn't all bad. I make it with canned chicken broth instead of water and milk and toss in some minced garlic to the pot before cooking then add cheese when you mix it all up. All it is is dehydrated potato. Its not like it was 10 years ago.

God you are stupid. I don't support taking things as cheap as possible I support working for the money to buy things. Then I save money. The money I save gets used to make more money. Concepts you can't grasp. Where did I ever talk down those who can't afford food? Thats right I didn't. I talked down about you. But you want to play the victim as per your M.O. Why can' you afford food bill? Thats right you're a lazy scumbag who doesn't work because he rather get high and live with mommy. The only leach is you bill. I have no problem with the poor going to the pantry. Not when they are really needy. But you aren't needy bill you are just laxy and worthless and stupid.
Here... I'll quote it for you guys just to refresh your memories as to what this "TOPIC" is about.

I just dont know how people on fixed and limited incomes can afford to buy groceries right now. I just came back from the store and barly bought anything and had an $80 bill. I paid $0.61/lb for bananas $1.99/lb for gala apples, $4.99 for a gallon of milk, $1.00 for 2 oranges and $3.99/lb for tomatoes. I also bought other stuff but gheeze I'm trying to eat healthy but it cost so much for good food when a bag of ships was $1.00 no wonder Americans are so fat. Oh and meat is so expensive too. Chicken was like $5.49/lb thats the same cost a fish which used to be a once in a while item cause it was so expensive. UGG Sorry but I just had to vent. I got stressed out at the grocery store today
Lets take a look at you paper. How did you afford that anyway bill?
Boneless fried chicken up from $6.79 to $7.89 a pound? You have got be an idiot to by precooked fried chicken at the starting price to begin with.
Cooked ham. Is that $7.09 to $7.29 per pound? How much is an uncooked ham?
Both of those you are paying a premium or foods that have been cooked for you already. I bet you can get it a good bit cheaper if you buy it uncooked then cook it your self.
Italian 5 grain bread up $0.56. Well how much is regular bread? has it gone up that much? Again you are pointing to a premium item. Those come with premium prices.
Cali grapes. Are those in season? Has there been any setbacks like poor harvests? Just asking I don't know. But I also don't buy grapes.
Yes the prices are going up a little. Hardly through the roof. Thanks for the sensationalistic report on the price of premium foods over the last year bill.

No, I believe that she was buying what she wanted when she wanted. Which, you obviously didn't gasp, is why people are complaining about their food being so expensive. They aren't shopping wisely!
I bet you your welfare check, Bill, that if Fiero Angel went and looked at the local grocery store ads for three weeks straight she would find everything she listed at or within 5% of what I listed the price to be in my area.
She paid $1-$2 for TWO oranges. I found 13 oranges for $3.50. And I ain't living in Florida, California or anywhere near where oranges are grown.

I'm not hiding anything and I never said they weren't. I guess you missed this post:

When prices go up, shop smarter. Go to the stores offering the best deals and patronize them. If you do, they'll do it some more. Use coupons. Get the most out of the dollars you have to spend on food. This isn't a difficult concept, Bill. Really it isn't.
Angie has a valid complaint but, she also listed a lot of items that are not in season and this time of year, they ARE going to be high. Especially higher than in the summer months. I also realize that she was just venting about it and I'm guessing from the tone of her post that the prices surprised her. That tells me she didn't really look at the ads in the paper to know what was on sale and where the things she needed were the cheapest. Most likely, she did just like we all do most of the time, went to the store she's familiar/comfortable with to pick up the items she needed and was surprised by the total.
I'll bet NEXT time she goes she will be better prepared.

Well.. go ask her then. Either way FOOD PRICES HAVE GONE UP. Does that register in your pea brain?

Make it your paycheck vs my welfare check for december and you are on.
That aside.... So letting the grocery stores decide what you will have for dinner this week is smart? You call that freedom? Stupid sheeple.

Depends on the orange. You want good quality or cattle feed.. seems you prefer cattle feed.
Food has gone up a bit up here but we are dam good shoppers. Milk has gone up as much as gas around here, I just drink less. Meat, we always buy and eat what is on sale and generally cook enough for two or three meals which cuts power use too. Once a weak or two we buy some nice steaks or a rib roast and have friends or family over.
Those huge prices I read on this thread remind me of those annoying people I see in line that have a cart packed to the hilt with chips and steaks and vine ripened tomatoes etc, drinking a 4.00 latte and then pay with F'ing FOOD STAMPS!
I see a lot of young people spend this way even when they are not using the hand out method of living. Then they wonder why they don't have money!

Christ you are dumb bill. If as you say we are stupid sheeple for shopping smart thats all good. But if your dumb ass is going to ***** about the price of just what you want stuff it and pay more for it. And no bill thats not telling you can't have your first amendment right. You can still cry its just that no one is going to care. I didn't know they fed cows oranges. They do grow many types of oranges in many countries. I buy limes every week. And every week they cost a different price. 2 weeks ago it was 8 for a dollar this week it was 15 for a dollar. This weeks also looked better. Gee I wonder why.

Being prepared for inflation in prices means a job that pays a raise equal to it which is a pipe dream.
In order to keep pace with INFALTION wages must increase well above it to offset the taxes incurred by a higher taxable income.
It's getting out of control. at the rate things are going with price increases across the board and wages lagging behind, all the coupons and sales flyers in the world wont make up the difference.
Sure you can make it if you dont mind eating french but no fry... corn but no bread string but no beans, ham but no burgar.. that is till next week when maybe the other half of your menu goes on sale.

Speaking of limes, Gin has really gone up in price! now that is of great concern,,,,,,,,,,,
Those are some dam good prices on limes, I am lucky to get them for three for buck.

Apparently.... So again, put your money where your ass hole of a mouth is.
Regardless of clipping coupons, buying smart, eating right the price of food is going up. Has been going up.
People on fixed incomes don’t have anymore money than they did 6 months ago.
Say what you want the price is directly related to the price of gas.
The price of gas has gone up about a dollar a gallon in the last year.
We are getting screwed buy the oil companies
Math class time, Steve.......
So under your hypothesis (Hypothesis is a guess not proven yet)........
"The price of gas has gone up about a dollar a gallon in the last year." (I was paying just under $2 a gallon of gas last years at this time?)
So gas has gone up 50% since last year.
".......price is directly related to the price of gas."
So therefore, under this hypothesis, food prices have gone up 50% in the past year.
------------------------------------
I like milk and have bought two twin packs of milk each week for the past 10 years. I KNOW the price of milk!
10 years ago, I bought milk for $1.75/gallon 5 years ago, I was paying around $2.25 (Twin gallon packs) about 15 months ago I was paying $2.50/gallon (Twin gallon packs) Today, I'm paying $3.00/gallon (Twin gallon packs) MILK has gone up 20%
My family eats a lot of steak Last year, I paid $5-$6/lbs for NY Strip on sale This year, I pay $5-$6 on sale for Ny Strip NY Strip has gone up 0%
My family buys in quite a bit of bread. Last year a loaf of bread was $1-$1.10 This year a loaf of bread was $1-$1.10 Bread has gone up 0%
Last year a frozen pizza on sale was $2 This year a frozen pizza on sale is $2
Last year chunky soup was $1.25/can This year chunky soup was $1.50/can Chunky soup went up 20%
Steve, you hypothesis was not proven. It started out bad with the "given" being that gas prices have gone up 50%.
Steve, this is one of the benefits of a college education that you don't see or never see. I can take a thought and rationally think about it and come up with a rational conclusion about things.
You come up with "Say what you want the price is directly related to the price of gas."
~edit under your thoughts gas has gone up 50% not 33%

yes, shipping has raised the cost of food. this was brought up at the beginning of the thread also. it is no big mystery. who is on a fixed income? did no one tell you that prices will continue to go up? I think inflation has been a constant in everyones world since the formation of the nation. and, I do believe that since the invention of the almighty TV - every citizen has been made aware of it. I hate being mean, but c'mon.
oh - and, heres one that most people dont realize right now: you also dont have health care insurance - since you are retired. another thing many will have to think about. they forget their health care is paid for by their employer. when not employed - guess what? it costs alot to be old & jobless. start saving NOW. in fact - if you find a way - start saving YESTERDAY.

And as usual your education gets in the way of common sense.
Where you are gas has gone up 50 cents, where I am gas has gone up ABOUT a dollar.
Again do we need to send you to a geography class Ace. Depending on where you live in relationship to the refineries has an affect on the price of gas.
Look at any part of the country, check their gas prices then where they are in relationship to the closest refinery.
Although there are other factors, such as California special gas. Makes their gas even more expensive.
The price of our food has gone up, so maybe I should drive to your neck of the woods and do my grocery shopping.

And looking at the charts, that price difference could be only a 20% increase in a week or two. Over the past two years gas has gone up in your area about 33%. You had zero % increas from 2005-2006.
