NASA is closing and control of the International Space Station is being handed over to Moscow. Houston has begun voluntary evacuations. I'm leaving tomorrow for San Antonio
Rita is now a strong CAT 4 and could easily become CAT 5 before making landfall. If it shifts to the north at the last minute it could be a bad day. On the other hand if it shifts to the south I'm going to feel it in San Antonio.
Here's my graphic I made for the storm track on a high resolution map. If it holds this might not be so bad for Houston
Dang if I did not know better, I would say that Mother Nature has something against the south. As Charlie Daniels once said, "The South is gonna do it again"
Come to think of of I am not sure if I do know better.
So I guess all that I am saying is all you guys in the southern states. Please take care. Look on the on the bright side, if you go north the worst you will have to worry about is cold.

Actually Houston is in the worst place if Rita follows your route. 100 miles will diminish most effects but storm surge, tornados, tropical force winds and the fact it's in the upper right quadrant makes it where the most damage will occur.
NOAA: August 2005 Update to Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook Issued: 2 August 2005 The predicted seasonal totals include the considerable activity that has already occurred prior to this update (7 tropical storms and 2 major hurricanes). Therefore, for the remainder of the season, we expect an additional 11-14 tropical storms, with 7-9 becoming hurricanes, and 3-5 of these becoming major hurricanes.

Well I'll be watching it on CNN like the rest of you, I'm not sticking around to see how this turns out. I just went and got my Indy, what a nightmare that was crawling at about 10 miles an hour for 20 miles. That was just the preview of what evacuation tomorrow is going to be like.

My company's President just now said we have business as usual tomorrow. We're just a little ol' mortgage company, why is it so important that the employees can't take care of our homes & families???!!!
I told my wife to take the kids up to Dallas in the morning, and I'll catch up when I can.
Edit: I got some of y'alls phone numbers. I'll be in touch later as things get rough.

Your boss is out of his rabbit-@ss mind. Leave with the wife and kids, and tell him if he's smart he will too.
Its been upgraded to one of the top three on record. This texas sized storm is right now a cat 5, currently it is 10% below normal atmospherical pressure.... and growing
I hope everyone here in the projected path has left already. Wont the highways be even more busy tomorrow morning?

Dang...guess we really need to raise funds - we may have even more affected members!
Jen
As Madcurl suggests my two chop tops are staying behind along with a couple of t-tops and misc GTs and an Indy. Let's hope they are okay when I get back...or else Curley might have to donate a couple of his chop tops to the needy.

I just saw on the news, the projections and galviston being a manditory "get the ^uck out" order. Saying that if this storm is as bad as they think. Galviston will be underwater by the end of it. Wipped off the planet.

It won't be the 1st time. About 10,000 people perished there from a hurricane in 1900. There is a seawall now, but it won't hold out a 30' storm surge. My father, 2 sisters and their families are battened down in Cleveland Texas, about 45 miles north of Houston up hiway 59. No danger of storm surge there, but the winds may play havoc with the 100'+ tall pine trees. I think we can kiss goodbye to our old homeplace in Baytown tho, which now belongs to my brother, but is vacant at the time.
The weather cannel shows a more northerly track, with Galveston closer to the bullseye, but there is something very interesting about the map someone has posted up above in this thread. Bay City is right in the line of fire. Bay City is home to the South Texas Nuclear Project, a nuke power plant.

Okay the latest projection has Galveston in the dead center. I'm about to unplug and and put the computer in the car. The only hope now is that the storm continues to turn to the north and head away from Houston. Wish me luck.

Man if i was you jscott i would have hit the road at night. I am sure it will be wall to wall nightmare trying to get out of there on Thursday. Also get as much gas as possible, fill up and get a container as well.
After the hurricanes roll thru gas is hard to find.
Holey sh*t!! A direct hit on Houston isn't a pleasant thought either, but let's hope the path stays to the east of the Huge MF and the Big Round Thing (electricians' language for nukies).
Sorry for the expected loss of cars and possibly everything else everyone has worked so hard for, but please, just take off and be safe, eh??!
I have a former boss in Willis, north of Houston on the southeast side of Lake Conroe, and just tried to call them and got a recording that calls could not go through at this time due to the pending hurricane, so hopefully the resources have been directed to emergency efforts. I don't know if people can still call out or not.
I know right where Willis is-been thru there many times. They should be ok, as they are also about 40-50 miles North of Hou. Wind and rain will be strong tho.

Management sent an email (from home) saying the office will be closed today ... AFTER I arrived !!!
Well, even if we had tried to leave YESTERDAY we would not be out of town still. I doubt that jscott has gotten very far, unless he has a helicopter. My boss left her house at 5 pm yesterday and is still not out of the city, and she burned half a tank of gas already. She will probably have to turn around. fwiw, my bosses are VERY angry at upper mgmt for not letting us out earlier. The 3rd shift guy who just left won't get home for a very long time because he lives north of town and that's all backed up with traffic. He mapped out the back roads at least. I'm going the other direction, so I shouldn't have a problem getting home from here.
I have no chance of getting out. My 'puter at home is broke and I'm just making a quick check of PFF before leaving work to go home. See y'all on the other side of this thing.

Gee how the world has changed for the better. When I grew up in the 60's and 70's you wouldn't imagine a statement like this EVER being made!!! Just goes to show how much the world in general has inproved with time.
God bless everyone in Rita's path, that girl is not gonna be nice to you all for sure!!

Finally reached San Antonio after about 24 hours on the road. It's normally about a 4 hour dirve. I'm watching landfall on CNN, it looks like Houston will dodge a bullet. Maybe tropical storm force winds.
During the evacuation there was no gas within a 100 mile radius of Houston. Traffic was moving at about 2 mph and the main fear was running out of gas as there was no place to refuel. After about 15 hours and a half of tank of gas left I decided to park and wait for traffic to die down. The parking areas looked like the convention center in New Orleans during Katrina. The officials have some explaining to do how this could have been so poorly planned. About three in the morning after 17 hours or so on the road things opened up and then it became a fuel management task to get to a gas station before running out.
Thanks to Cliffw and others who were calling me for moral support I was able to find gas and I made it. Good thing I was not pulling a Fiero, I would have never made it.
I hope the folks near the Texas Louisianna border are alright.

Ya'll I'm gonna try and see if I could access my part of New Orleans next weekend if things goes well after Rita flooding is drained. Can someone do that GPS thing for my housing area? I can't find a site where to get it for my area. If you can get it PM it to me.
On another note, I hope the dash swap can continue, lol. I was just in the middle of doing a under dash sub like golden 86. It was all formed up and everything I just had to fiberglass it add the sub.
