One my concerns about Newt is what I'm hearing about his record on the 2nd Amendment and gun control. Seems to me he helped get the assault weapons ban and some other anti-gun stuff through when he was speaker. Haven't yet had the time to do full research on him to verify this. Anyone else got any enlightening on the subject?

Newt Aims To Kill Ban On Assault Weapons BY DAVE EISENSTADT DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU Tuesday, December 05, 1995
WASHINGTON House Speaker Newt Gingrich cut a deal with conservative lawmakers yesterday and agreed to have the House consider overturning the ban on assault weapons.
"Newt said there will be a vote before the end of the year," said Gingrich spokeswoman Lauren Sims. A specific date has not been set.
The weapons ban, signed into law by President Clinton in 1994, covers 19 types of semi-automatic weapons.
It was so hotly contested last year that it passed the House by two votes.
..........
I checked out the House vote for this bill for H.R. 3355 and Newt's vote? No GA-6 Gingrich, Newton [R]
I'm not for sure who is spreading the word that Newt supported or voted for the Assault Weapons Ban, but it isn't true.

Nothing better? I'm not sure whether I agree, but that's pretty sad if it's true.
You do have a point but, the same issue comes up every election. Look at what we ended up with last time. I suppose there is a way I would vote to re-elect the current administration but, I don't believe Osama Bin Laden can or will run against..................... Oh, never mind.

No matter who's on the ticket, Obama will be running against Bush.

I would like to say that there isn't a republican candidate that I can get behind, but I don't think the democratic party is guilt free either. They both take $ and lie there asses off.

Can someone explain the clothespin on the lady in front to me? edit: Is it just that they all stink?
Yes. She is holding her nose and preparing to vote for the least stinky one. In this case, think of a combination of limburger cheese, garlic, and eau de skunk-sweat. Blech.

How much more does Obama have to "stink" before you finally come out and say "Blech" about him? I mean, seriously, you still like the job he's doing?

There will always be those who will continue to love Obama as long as he continues to not be George W. Bush. Something about only giving Obama "achievable goals."

I'm not an Obama fan, but it's about time to give it a rest. There is no one here who doesn't know what position you guys take on him. I get it. You don't have to keep hitting me over the head with it. I will only say this once. I think GW Bush was the dumbest president that we've ever had and the country will suffer for years because of him. I don't feel any need to keep dissing him. He's history, so hopefully I won't feel the need to keep on and keep on about him. Once more though, I'm not a democrat or a fan of Obama.

Figured you deserved to know where I'm coming from because I don't think I ever really expressed my opinion of Bush. I'm done though no need for me to go on about it.

I only bring GW up when people act like his tax cuts (the ones still in effect) created jobs, the Great Recession didn't start during his administration, and the bail-outs didn't start with him. It's as if all of this started the moment Obama took office. I'm not happy with any of it, but at least I have an idea of when it all started. I'll probably vote Libertarian just so I don't have to vote for the same old finger-pointers.

dratts.. sorry.. going to call you out on this one a lil bit. GW is the "dumbest" president? Why do I suddenly get the feeling you were born after 1990?.. Mind you I'm no fan of Bush Jr. But "dumbest, worst?" For economic or foreign issues? Looked up Wilson, Roosevelt, Roosevelt, Carter?
What exactly were you expecting? He promised manned missions to Mars when he first got in.. Bam 9/11.. Oh but that was a Bush Cheney plot to dump a trillion into mil spending and then get called out about intel that everyone else on the planet agreed on.. jeesh..

I am answering only to let you know that I read your reply. I promised that I wouldn't keep on about my opinion of GW and I won't. Nobody here is going to change their mind because of what I say. I'm kind of glad that I wasn't born after 1990. I've pretty much lived my life. My kids, grandkids and great grandkids don't have much to look forward to.

I like guns and I think that an assault rifle would be fun to play with. I don't need one though and I do worry about them falling into the wrong hands.

the assault weapons ban did nothing to remove "assault" weapons. It was an arbitrary law that made people feel good, but effect no real change. Example.....An AK-47 with a bayonet lug and bayonet was an "assault weapon." remove the bayonet, it was now not an "assault weapon." Either way, the AK-was still legal to own and did nothing to effects it's performance as a rifle.
The law is also unconstitutional. The 1986 automatics weapons ban is unconstitutional as well, and should be removed.

How can you out-and-out lie like this?!? By most economists estimates, the recession began in late 2007, then the financial meltdown happened in the summer of 2008, during the presidential campaign. Don't you remember when McCain famously QUIT THE CAMPAIGN in order to address the problem? (He quit for almost one whole day!) And dubya initiated TARP; Obama continued it (much to his shame).
How can you be so woefully ignorant of recent history? This stuff is EASILY google-able, or just freaking remember yesterday!!! Jeezus!!!

Newt's moderated his stance on child labor laws... now they are merely "stupid". He thinks it's okay if kids can work as assistant janitors, mopping floors and cleaning toilets in schools.
Either he has never read the toxic ingredients labels on the cleaning solutions they use in schools, or he just doesn't care if your kid dies from poisons used on the job.
The world can't be rid of this twit soon enough.

The only reason the recession didn't arrive earlier is that bush was riding the housing bubble. People were refinancing and pouring money into the economy.
Newt is clearly the smartest and most qualified of the GOP field. I wish people would realize that and get behind him.
He's also got more baggage and hypocrisy in his past then most Americans will approve of when voting.
Like this:
quote
By SHANNON McCAFFREY, Associated Press Shannon Mccaffrey, Associated Press – ATLANTA – Newt Gingrich says his passion for his country contributed to his marital infidelity. In an interview posted Wednesday by The Christian Broadcasting Network, Gingrich — who recently converted to Catholicism — said he had sought God's forgiveness for mistakes in his past.
"There's no question at times of my life, partially driven by how passionately I felt about this country, that I worked far too hard and things happened in my life that were not appropriate," Gingrich said.
"What I can tell you is that when I did things that were wrong, I wasn't trapped in situation ethics, I was doing things that were wrong, and yet, I was doing them," he said. "I found that I felt compelled to seek God's forgiveness. Not God's understanding, but God's forgiveness."
Gingrich went on to say that he and his third wife, Callista, now have a great marriage.
"Forget about all this political stuff. As a person, I've had the opportunity to have a wonderful life, to find myself now, truly enjoying the depths of my life in ways that I never dreamed it was possible to have a life that was that nice," he said.
The twice-divorced former U.S. House speaker has admitted he had an affair with Callista, a former congressional aide, while married to his second wife. It happened at the same time he was attacking President Bill Clinton for his relationship with White House intern Monica Lewinsky.
The interview with the Christian broadcaster comes as Gingrich gears up for a likely presidential run. He has been courting religious and social conservatives who would be critical in a GOP primary....
Cmon man, you cheated on your wife in the name of passion for your country ? And hounded and impeached Clinton for the same thing you were doing at the same time? (that's to say, cheating and lying about it.)
Lame.

He is the smartest (cleverest) republican out there. At this point it looks like he will be the one opposing Obama. It definitely won't be boring. Hopefully his baggage doesn't take him down too soon. I'm looking forward to seeing those two square off.
