I think it's tragic this girl died, but she took her own life, I'd say she made that decision. Yes, those people posing as a friend were wrong to do so, and caused her to have a trust crisis. But really, don't we all go through similar issues of trust as children, or even as adults? I had 2 kids pretend to be my friend back in the day because I had an Atari 2600. It's something that we all have to deal with, and it doesn't appear as if she was built to handle that. She was willing to kill herself over a MySpace lie, chances are it was only a matter of time before something shook her enough to commit suicide.

I'm not saying the world is better off with her gone, or that other people acted wisely. In fact, the bigger tragedy is that we can't identify and possibly cure more people that have these issues. But I don't think blame for her actions should be placed on others.

And the Hitler comparison is over the top, you can do better than that. When you invoke Hitler or the Nazi's in general, any valid points you may have are instantly overshadowed and the discussion tends to devolve into the sewer rapidly.

That's true, but this particular episode, whether by itself or combined with other things, caused her to decide to end her life. From my understanding, she didn't know she was being fooled, she thought that someone decided not to be her friend anymore. Point is, it seems to me that sooner or later something was going to push her past her breaking point (a breaking point which was probably very low, at least by most people's standards). Like I said, it's a terrible thing, but it doesn't appear that she was built to handle the stress of her life.

My gawd, she was only 13 years old. She was just starting life! Perhaps she was immature for her age and couldn't handle the "adult" stresses that society seems to want to force upon today's children. After a couple more years of maturing she might've been fine dealing with these issues, but now we'll never know.

I'm not shrugging it off, I've said over and over that I think it was tragic. Someone that young hasn't even begun to experience life. But there are a lot of 13 year olds going through as much or more stress that aren't killing themselves. For whatever reason, she became so overwhelmed by whatever she was going through that she decided to kill herself. That indicates (to me) that she didn't deal well with stress. That's not her fault by any means, but I don't think we should be blaming other people for it either (as others in this thread wanted to do). Sometimes people are born who aren't equipped to handle life, whether that's a physical problem or a mental problem. And as I've also said, it's very tragic that we don't have more of an ability to diagnose and help these people.

There's a bit too much of taking the safe road here, because of something I don't want to name and cause the thread to be hijacked. It is good to have your opinions challenged, and to examine your positions on issues from time to time. That's one of my biggest disappointments on this board, too much of the same opinion combined with some who try to silence or ridicule any dissent.

But I still think you enjoy watching people get pissed off

Saying don't let the door hit you on the way out is NOT saying that person deserved to die. It is simply stating "good riddance!" "I don't care about you" callous, sure it is. I am sure we have all said that to some chick at some point in our lives.

There is no shortage of people with mental problems that just cannot cope. Some seek help, some just endure unhappiness, and some take their own lives, or try to. It is the people that are close to them that are supposed to see these warning signs and especially in the case of a minor, intervene! I would say the parents should have seen this coming, but obviously they didn't and or maybe they couldn't. It was an extreme over reaction for sure. I am sure the parents are going to be doing some lashing out! they must feel terrible. BUT the world cannot and must not change just to accommodate the weak.
