So what if somebody claims they bought the car? In this state, at least, if you don't have a title, you don't own the car, simple as that. Its not your property. If you can't produce a bill of sale or title for a vehicle, then it is stolen.
The cops should still have been able to nail them for about 1000 things. At a minimum, they could have written a dozen tickets for no registration, no proof of insurance, etc. I'd bet the person that stole your car probably didn't have a license either. Further, I bet its someone who has a bench warrant out on them, so they could have been hauled in for the other **** they've certainly done as well.
Here, the cops seem to take a bit of pleasure in putting the screws to someone trying at least reasonably hard to follow the rules. I'd think they'd be going crazy to bust the "bad guys" down there.

first, I'm going to post an update, and then I'll respond to some peoples posts.
STOP HATING ON THE COPS I point blank asked them, "so the M****** F***** just gets away scott free?"
They explained it to me this way. They didn't see him steal the car, so they can't pin that on him.
If they caught him driving it, or even waited to watch him get into it, if he claimed that he didn't know it was stolen, or that he just bought it from Leisure Suit Larry 10 minutes ago, then they can't get him for stolen goods.
back in the good old day, we use to hang horse thieves...
That's true. All you have to do is tell the cop you didn't do it or didn't know it was stolen and they can't do anything. Of course, if YOU were ever caught driving a stolen vehicle, you'd be arrested. Almost makes me want to become a car thief, since it's virtually impossible for any car theif to be captured unless they're stealing from the police themselves.
No, the cops you were dealing with are lazy pieces of sh!t. The Fiero isn't an expensive car, which means you're not wealthy and they don't give a rats ass.
What do you want to bet if the Police Chief's or Mayor's car was stolen, there'd be an arrest?
I'm just glad you got the car back reasonably in tact. In a case like this that's really the most you can hope for. Anything else is gravy.

Okay glad to hear for you that you got it back. As far as the prints, I came home to a busted door and my LCD TV barely hanging on the wall. I guess the alarm scared them off. There was a "perfect" print on the screen. They dusted and took the print. I had to identify that the person had not been invited into my home. He is now in jail. So if they REALLY wanted to catch them, they would take prints and question the persons that they matched and ask them what they were doing in your car. Prints on the OUTSIDE can't be used. ANYONE could touch the outside. Tha inside however is different. Police don't want to work for a paycheck. They wonder why mo one has any respect for them anymore.

thanks for the radio will. anyone know where to the drive belt for the tape player I can't remember. I think I may have even posted a part number for them on here.
I'm glad you recovered it in at least some sort of driving condition. What side was that again? You just need the motor mount to piece, right? I have several out in the barn I think, so I should be able to come up with something for you.

I've witnessed adults stealing the regular chrome ones too- keeping the thread back on track. If anyone has watched the T.V. show called, "Jacked"? It clearly demonstrates just how thieves try and justify their ridicules actions once their caught stealing a bait car. Link; http://www.aetv.com/jacked/about/index.jsp
As was previously mentioned, all thieves will try and lie their way out of it, even though there's hidden live cameras rolling inside the car (a person could reason that the thieves are joy riding around), but from viewing the episodes-- the thieve are actually driving the cars on a regular basis--- like they own the car. As in the case here, the thieve(s) was driving the car around like had no fear of being caught-- either by the cops or by the owner of the car.

I just read the post for the first time and got really scared lol
You started describing the car, 85 GT like mine, and mentioned the front marker lights are wired to be daytime running lights, also like mine. Then I started thinking, "I bought it from a guy who just had it painted and the car was stripped of pieces and his name wasn't on the title." I actually went and compared my VIN to yours hahaha. Then I read more and see you got it back. Sorry you had to go through all the stress, but I am glad it is with its right owner.
Also, I wanted to mention that I see all the posts of people offering parts and it made me realize that proud Fiero owners are like family with each other. Makes me feel good to now be part of this family.
Buddycraig you are truly a luck or a blessed man. The fiero gods have smiled upon you. I know what it is to get a car stolen, i would cry if my FIERO of all cars was stolen so you getting it back must have been the best day of your life.
I am still waiting for police to find my stolen car of over a year... I had given up a long time ago you my friend are lucky.

glad you got it back. do you think anyone would really miss that person that stole ur car? im just saying is all...
this makes me want to get a nice gps alarm now. especially since I have so much time, work, and money put into it.
time > money
kinda stuck between a new fuel pump and a decent alarm. since I live in a nice gated community, I don't think I need the alarm immediately. the car stays garaged. so no one sees it unless im out test driving it.
but again, happy to hear you got your car back.
ever thought of changing ur name to frank castle and "setting things strait"?

Yeah, Now that I saw what the cops did (or didn't do) I really wanted to be the person that caught the SOB myself.

Well, i wont have to worry about them stealing it again until after i fix it back up. and right now i have a customer car in the garage with a head job, so it will be a while.
But i'm planning on doing the horn thing my coworker suggested.

What is this horn thing? A switch that disables the starter and connects the starter circuit to the horn?

i drove some hooptie at the tire shop years ago that had a kill switch in headlight switch. had to turn the headlights on to be able to start the car. maybe making a certain series/combination of things to have on or off to get the car to start. like wipers at a certain speed with the heater on at certain speed with the defroster on. or something of the likes. and has to be done in a pattern so it will start.

That would be very simple to set up with a relay... The headlight bit that is.

I am also glad to hear that you got it back. As a person who also had a car stolen, you got very lucky.
They recovered my stolen 71 Satellite Sebring on fire without even looking for it. It was paperwork to the pig who wrote up my report. He got mad and yelled at me because I was slowing him down with details because he had to get to his next call. A O

yep, a hidden double throw toggle that is normally closed in one direction. wire it to the horns and if you are not pressing the hidden button when you turn the key, the horn goes off. I bet a car thief would only try that once or twice before they moved to the next one.
cut the wire to the fuel pump relay, wire it to a toggle under the drivers seat or elsewhere. Car wont start until the toggle is switched on. $1.95 anti theft system and it works great. Even keeps me from starting the car until I remember it.
