I asked them to stake it out. they wanted nothing to do with it.
Congrats on getting it back. How much gas was in it? Where was it parked? Did it contain any personal belongings that you did not recognize? This might show they didnt plan on you finding it for a while longer. Did they steal your stereo?
This story doesn't make sense. As a former Police officer this story just doesn't add up. You found the car and the Police didn't do anything??? Let me tell you what, in Houston the car would be impounded, Dusted gone over for weapons and and drugs and then after it sat in the Police impound for a few weeks you could prob pick it up.
Something doesn't add up here folks!

WTF????????????????????
Worthless, absolutely worthless public serpents there! What kind of cop wants nothing to do with finding the people who stole a car????????? I'd get the media involved on that one.

Well, you are more than welcome to check it out for yourself...
I live in Kansas City, Missouri The car was stolen from in front of my house on 8/12 The case number is 09061798 The phone number to the stolen car unit is 816-234-5108
My car was found in Grandview, Missouri The report number is 09-4790 The non-emergency number is 816-316-4980
I would love to have an explanation as to why they are not interested in trying to solve this crime.

I can't say...
The Grandview police called KC and asked them if they wanted to come and take fingerprints. (I would have thought that would have been the job of the police in the jurisdiction that it was found in) Anyway... KC declined.
So the Grandview cops said I could either drive it or have it towed home.

Congrats on getting it back, and it would seem, pretty much in one piece too. Seems like you got hit by a considerate thief, or at least one that needed a daily driver! I wonder if he reported the car 'stolen' when he turned up and it was not there. that'd be funny!

I can vouch for BuddyCraigg. I had a Fiero stolen in 1999 in midtown KCMO. The car was parked in front of a fire hydrant for over a week collecting several tickets. One would think they would clearly see the damaged interior and steering column. The police didnt do anything but impound the car and tried to get me to pay impound fees but didnt notify me until a 2 days had passed from the first impound day. I got out of the fees when the P.D. claimed a new rule had just gone into effect that exempted theft victims from having to pay impound costs. They did NOT dust the car either.
I think I have learned something from this thread. If my car is stolen and I find out where its at I will be there to film it when they come back or be sitting in the car with my lucky garrote.

I'm glad you got it back with no major damage. The cops are basically too lazy to catch car thieves as the judges just let those thieves caught, back out on the streets by the next day. The cops know that no real action will be done to criminals unless the criminal is a mass murderer.
The judicial process is the problem in this country today.

Unfortunately, other than the cops being the ones to find my car things kinda ended up that way for me as well. Since they pulled the guys over while they were in the car they were able to charge them with possession of stolen property but nothing more. St. Louis County cops were the ones to pull the people over and they did tow my car to an impound lot. Then they called the Franklin County Sheriff's Dept. and had them call me and tell me where to go pick it up. They didn't dust for prints they didn't search the inside of the car. When I got it back it was full of groceries, they had gotten at Wal-Mart. I found the receipts where they had returned a broken DVD recorder that was in my trunk because "I" was going to take it back to Wal-Mart the next day and spent some of the money on groceries, clothing, and jewelry. I called the cops and told them that the Wal-Mart they went to (Which since I had the receipt I had the location and time that they were there) would have surveillance video of them returning MY property for cash which they still would have had about $100 of after leaving Wal-Mart. They told me there was nothing they could really do about that but the good news was anything that was in the car was now my property so to keep the groceries or return them to Wal-Mart for the money back. Half of the stuff was perishable items which after sitting at the impound lot was spoiled and the other half was stuff I had NO use for. As old as the car was the insurance company wanted to total it out and after I paid my deductable they would have given me like $300 so I refused to turn it over and just drove it using a screw driver to start it until the fuel pump gave out 3 or 4 months later.
Buddy, I grew up in that area (actually lived IN Grandview for a little while), I can't say it surprises me that your car was found there or that the cops did nothing about it. But, I'm glad it's back home and hopefully they didn't run it too hard while they had it. So the part I don't get is they let you pick the car up yourself from the thief? That sounds, well number one, dangerous. What if the crook would have seen you taking the car back and come out with a gun? Also, that would be almost inviting vigilante justice by letting YOU know where the crook lives or at least visits. By not doing anything at all they are almost telling the crook to just go do it again. At least in my case the two boys they found in the car spent a little time downtown answering questions and know that a record was kept of the event, so it would look really bad for them if they wound up in the same situation again.
Anyway, at least the story has a luke-warm happy ending. The car is back in your possession and the next tickets mailed to you will be legitimate

a co-worker told me she thought she saw it this morning. so I went where she said it was tonight after work.
After i saw it, I called the cops. they showed up but didn't do anything other than tell me to drive it home or have it towed... NICE!
I haven't been able to check it out yet, because it's dark and I have too much customer stuff that needs to be done. But it appears to be in one piece.
Glad to see it home, Thief knows where it resides though, hope you took precautions? Since the police there are WORTHLESS, was it located at a house or a business?
Edit to say i'm sorry you lost those g(_)n$ in the lake when you were fishing....

I am glad the car was found finaly and in one piece.
the cops will not do anything there is no money in it for them. they would rather write tickets for a raise. protect your own, no one else will do it for you.

...Anyways, good to hear you have it back - I have been there before (T/A stolen), cops here also didn't seem to be too worried about catching the crooks either, although they are mostly known to the cops, but there is not much the can do about it as they are probably young offenders and our idiodic laws protect these 'innocent brats' from jail and the general public (no, you don't need to know that little Johnny down the street is a car thief)

You got your fiero back!! Kick ASS!!! Cops suck. My folk's had their brand new 04 Mustang gt convertible stolen right out of their driveway one night. Thief actually walked into the house and took the keys and a purse while my brother was asleep on the couch. The car was found a few days later in Hartford CT completely bashed up and with 2 spares on it. The cops tried to say my brother, who was 28 yrs old with a wife and 2 kids was the one that did it and made up a story so he wouldn't get into trouble. Then my father couldn't even get the police to give him a police report. A local shop ended up with the car after it was totaled and they found all sorts of evidence the cops didn't even bother to collect. There was a crack pipe actually sitting on the passenger seat! Apparently they have bigger things to worry about in Griswold CT than auto theft.
I'm glad you got the car back, but pretty disgusted by the police. With all the documentation you have, it'd make a nice news segment for KCTV5, KSHB41, FOX4, etc.

I'm pretty sure roger is in TX. He can legally shoot. I once watched a repo show where they took a guys car in Texas. He drove after them firing shots out of his car at the tow truck. When the cops came they questioned him and let him go, because he was with in his rights, as he assumed his car was being stolen. Moral of the story, don't steal things or be a repo man in Texas, you will be shot at .

first, I'm going to post an update, and then I'll respond to some peoples posts.
STOP HATING ON THE COPS I point blank asked them, "so the M****** F***** just gets away scott free?"
They explained it to me this way. They didn't see him steal the car, so they can't pin that on him.
If they caught him driving it, or even waited to watch him get into it, if he claimed that he didn't know it was stolen, or that he just bought it from Leisure Suit Larry 10 minutes ago, then they can't get him for stolen goods.
back in the good old day, we use to hang horse thieves...

the upper steering column and a lock cylinder right side headlight frame minus the motor center dash faceplate around heater controls cheap radio (funny, this is the second time someone has stolen a $50 CD player out of this car... WTF people? If you are going to steal a radio, make sure it's worth it! )

The car was in a parking lot of a slum apartment complex at Duck Rd and Blue Ridge Blvd. The cops helped me drive it to a different parking lot without a working clutch and then took me back to get my Grand Am.

Good news on your getting it back. Now it's time to put a kill switch in it. Larry
Actually, a mechanic that works with me made a suggestion of a very wasy circuit. with a simple switch and some wire: Everytime you turn the key to the CRANK position, the horn will blow...

Even better. Now I don't have to pull the column. I also have a pretty nifty stereo too. Its WAY old school. If you don't want to get it stolen you hit a little button a handle pops up and the whole deck slides out of the receiver. Its kinda cool.

I just found 2 dot-matrix center face plates in my basement. so now I'm down to needing the part of the right head light that bolts to the body and a radio.
