You can get a professionally overhauled Getrag on your doorstep for $1000+core and it bolts right in. I don't know typical prices for a 6 speed, but I've heard numbers in the $1500 range for the installation kit. And the gearing is worse in the 6 speed.

I believe there was an engineering change on the tranny between the 2006 and 2007 model years. There's a surplus of leftover 2006 trannys for sale.

I'd want to get a 2007 if possible. It's got a little better gearing.

Ebay. First one was $600 last summer and last one was $500 shipped about 2-3 months ago. Seller who had 10+ was posted at the mall too. Both brand new. Yeah the new one is a little different but I doubt you can feel any difference. Even with the 6 speed and I don't see any big difference from the 5-speed other than the drop of RPMs on 6th. If you get the 07 great but I wouldn't pay more than $100 more for it than what I can pay for the pre-07.

What kind of rpm are you seeing at 60 or 70mph? 6th gear is definitly nice for highway cruising, especially with thirsty V8s.

Around 2100 RPM at 75 MPH with the '06 F-40 tranny. About 25 MPG with an LS-2.

80mph is around 2550 for me. That's the one I always remember because that is how everybody runs around here.

Out with the old and in with the new. Why rebuild a tired 5-speed? Get the newer 6-speed.

Yes, but WHO has already successfully mated a 6-spd with a N* in an 88 GT?

He's right. There are 6 speeds on ebay for about $500. So what all does it take to get one to work in a Fiero?

Uhhh.. Eehhh... About $3k more for instant gratification. Or do your own research and save some money at expense of time.

Based upon whats posted here...

Overhauling a Getrag 5 speed will definitly be cheaper and easier.

Maybe they're might be others that are not PPF members who have mated a Northstar/6/speed, but I don't know of such person.

The 64k questions is...Do you want to be the first? Or opt for the LS1-2/6-speed to which there's a shop to install it, a set cost to install it, and a reputation to back it.

No one on this forum. I'm not going to get into the 6 speeds any time soon because of their attrocious gearing in the lower gears.

I'm only partial to N* because I drive an Aurora with a de-tuned N* in it and I've put 140K on it with absolutely no problems or maint. As far as a 6psd, I need to keep the costs down, so I guess I'll stick with a Getrag.

I too have a 6 speed and am waiting for someone else to do a N* install. Incidentally the 4t65ehd and 4t60 also have to modify the N* water manifold in order to mate.

My thinking was that the rpm drop was from 1st to 2nd. Since I'm not planing.on spending a lot of time in 1st,. this didn't seem significant except for drag racing. I may do some drag racing, but again, not much of my driving time is going to be spent there.

I know, I was just messin with ya, I remember your sig from back in the day.... A few pages back, Archie was whining about Crzyone not doing research on who did the first auto LT1 install, so I thought it was ironic.

I'm not seeing a date when that car was completed?

Its neat, but not sure why he used the 4T80e over the 4T60. A lot of added weight. Not sure how they came to the 360hp figure from an LT1 either considering it was rated at 300hp in a 95 Vette.

I was wrong about the first automatic, admitted it. I meant to say 4 speed but it looks like I'm wrong again. In my head I was speciffically thinking about the 4T60 and an LT1. Thats what I get for not being specific enough.

I wonder how he managed to shoehorn in an LT1 with a 4T80e. Must have been some cutting involved.
