I just did an engine swap on my 87gt, and need to service the tranny. I need to know where you put the fluid in, and what fluid i should use.

to quote Whuffo: "The lubricant to use is called Synchromesh Fluid. Get it at GM dealers for $10 per quart or at AutoZone for $4 per quart. You'll need 4 quarts; the tranaxle holds 3.5 quarts. The drain plug is on the differential housing - directly below the drivers side driveshaft. You fill the transaxle through the hole the VSS mounts in; remove the 10mm bolt and clip then pull the VSS straight out carefully. Very carefully - you don't want to knock the gear off the bottom of it."

Regardless of what oil was originally specified for the various manual trannies, GM now specifies Syncromesh for all of them. Pennzoil makes it for $5/quart and AutoZone stocks it, much cheaper than the GM flavor.

This post is probably way too late to do anyone any good at this point... but for the record:

The Isuzu 5-speed drain plug is on the LH side of the transaxle case, just below the LH inner CV joint. It's a conventional right hand thread (lefty loosey, righty tighty ). A 15/16" box end wrench seems to work well on this drain plug.a 15/16, or a 24 mm wrench

Took a little coaxing from a small sledge hammer (on the end of the box end wrench) to get my drain plug out, so it may get some antiseize compound before it's reinstalled.

The stuff that flowed out of my tranny, was a whiff from out of the past... 80W-90 gear oil!! Ah, the aroma of incompetence ... at least they didn't try using salad oil

Thanks Jeff, Although you could have refrained from using the a-word as a place to purchase it. The NAPA gurus would probably frown on one of their managers buying outside the company.
