First of all I want to say that the tranny is in the car , and I don't want to pull the tranny to change the fluid .

I want to install synchromesh tranny fluid in my Isuzu 5 Speed . I need to drain whatever type fluid is presently in there . Is there some sort of drain plug , or do I need to use some sort of pump ? I've been told a couple of different things in regard to draining the fluid .Also , any hints on whats the best way to re-fill the tranny ? I know I need to re-fill it through the speedometer sending unit , but are there any tricks to this ?

Thanks Guys .

Those that help will be given a positive rateing .

Last time I did mine I got a small pump from Northern Tools and sucked it through the speedo mounting.

There's a huge bolt on the side of the case down low, that's your drain plug. It'll be way bigger than all the others.

yes, use the big plug on the side. as a quick aside or an FYI, i saw a GM TSB that said to use synchromesh in the tranny exclusively. nothing else. apparently some dealers were using ATF to service the tranny and there were failures involved. i remember it was fairly adamant about using only the GM stuff too. i've gotta get some soon, too. lol

if you as 10 people you will get 10 different answers. sycromesh is recommended by GM but a lot of people dont want to use it due to cost, about $10 a quart. but you can buy it cheaper from an auto parts store.

a lot of people say atf or 5-30 will work just fine. but i see the added expence of the recommended stuff compaired to the work involved in removing a tranny and well... i just dont want to take the risk.

i vote for the sycromesh

Ya, the plug is like 15/16 if I remember right. For the Isuzu, I would go 5W30. Seems like 3 quarts. I change mine whenever I do engine oil changes. Also, wash the speedo sending unit area off with a hose before you change, as dirt may enter the tranny there when you remove it.

Hey, Galen, getting it ready for the run? Did you find the drain plug located in a recess between 2 case bosses? I've never looked under the 85GT (Isuzu conversion) to see where it's located, but a year or so back, there was a thread about it being so hard to get to, and with the head rounding off.

My above-mentioned conversion was precipitated by a garage putting 80W90 into my Muncie 4-speed. Made it a grand total of 60 miles before it suddenly came apart. The Isuzu has about 150K on it with 5W30 in it with no problems. The 87GT has Pennzoil Syncromesh from Auto Zone at about $7 a quart. Takes 2.5 quarts. Since there are no pollutants from piston blow-by as in an engine, there's no need to change the fluid any less than GM recommendations, which I think is 60K miles.

Hey Fiero Fool , I've been seriously thinking about makeing the " Tail of the Dragon " run . Right now I'm working seven days a week. I own my own business , and it's either feast or famine .

Sorry to hear that a garage messed up your Muncie 4-Speed by putting in 80W90 .

I called Auto Zone and they have three quarts in stock . I'll swing by there tommorow ( Sunday ) and pick them up .

Are you certain that the Isuzu 5-Speed takes 2.5 Quarts of Synchromesh ? I not sure as to how much Synchromesh to use ? I won't be able to work on the Fiero until Wednesday .

Thanks for the help . I gave you a + rateing a long time ago .

As I recall, it's like 2.8 quarts. Just put 3 in and let it adjust itself

Not really, there is a dipstick on the speedo sending unit.

I'm back is closer to correct. I just went out and checked what I have left and it's about 1/4 quart, so it'd be in the neighborhood of 2.7-2.8 quarts, and as he indicates, there is a marking on the speedometer sensor.

The 80W90 incident happened back in 96. Didn't find out about it for 2 years. Of course, I paid for the new tranny and the swap. They denied all wrongdoing.

Yep, they use around 2.5 quarts of fluid. I had one isuzu trans that I used 5w30 in. It didnt last long. Could just be because of it's age/mileage, but now I use Syncromesh in my transmission. Never gives me a problem. Is quiet and shifts smooth.
