Authorities say at least 26 people, including 18 children, were killed Friday when a gunman clad in black military gear opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school.

A law enforcement official said the shooter, who is dead, was from New Jersey and had ties to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. Authorities recovered a Glock and Sig Sauer 9mm handgun, but it was unclear who killed the shooter, who wore black combat garb and a military vest.

Local news outlets report that the shooting occurred inside a kindergarten classroom, and that all the pupils in that classroom are unaccounted for.

An official with knowledge of the situation said the 20-year-old gunman, whose name has not been released, also had a .223-caliber rifle. The motive is not yet known.

Police are also questioning another man in connection with the shooting. Witnesses told the Connecticut Post that a handcuffed man, dressed in camouflage, was led out of a nearby woods by officers.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., authorities reported that a shooter was in the main office of the school. A person in one room had "numerous gunshot wounds," police told the Hartford Courant.

A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher was shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital. Local news outlets also reported that the principal was among those shot.

Parent Lisa Procaccini told Fox News that her daughter was sitting in a classroom when she and others heard gun shots.

"She was in a small class -- a reading group and they started hearing bangs," Procaccini said. "Her teacher, and I’m grateful for this, rushed kids into the bathroom and locked the door. They told kids it was hammering and tried to keep them calm.”

"Children were crying," Procaccini said. "She did tell me about a little boy that was in a police officer’s arms, bleeding. I don’t know if she gets it."

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said two firearms were recovered from the scene. "

People are so messed up.

God, take the hand of those little ones who come to you, as they are scared and may not know you. Be with the families, ease their suffering.

...

Animal scumbag shooter was enabled by the politicians, school policies, etc, who basically handed him a 'defenseless victim zone', A.K.A. 'Gun Free School Zone'. These animals KNOW they won't be stopped, since that sort of law only applies to the law abiding.

And already, there are calls for more gun control. IDIOTS. Double-down on FAILURE. Here's a clue: MURDER IS ALREADY ILLEGAL IN ALL 50 STATES! And somehow THAT didn't stop this whack-job.

Enough is enough. Train and arm some of the teachers, and this sort of thing won't happen, or at least the body count will be much lower. There's a reason criminals don't go into police stations to commit mass-murder. Or gun shows.

These college aged killers are really just turning it into a sick contest. Looks like the idea is to see who can get the highest body count.

I do like the idea of schools requiring a minimum of 50% armed staff.

Oh for God sakes! Throwing more weapons at a problem solves nothing!

My kids school is locked down. You can't get in unless you are buzzed in and that only gets you into the lobby were you can speak to an administrator who then will call your child out or escort you in.

You know what.. F-this there is no common sence left in the world, just give your kids a gun while you are at it, they are probably as smart and as responsible as the other nutjobs running around with guns anyhow.

If you met some of the educator that I have known, you might say never mind. I had seen a lot of teachers lose it.
I know where we need to start employing returning Veterans. We need a good guy, bad ass, at every large gathering location. Could be a dual roll position or something.

yes, part of why I like this so much.
raise the overall quality of the staff.
and, maybe even shift some of the sunshine bias from the education system.

People are going to kill regardless, ask China last week when 22 kids were stabbed by a crazed man with a knife. If someone wants to kill someone else they don't even need a weapon, should we outlaw hands too? Metal detectors are all fine and dandy, now you have someone inside your school with a ceramic knife that is going to, you guessed it, kill people. OKC bombing, the dude used a Ryder truck filled with amonium nitrate and diesel fuel to level a block, lets outlaw Ryder trucks. An armed teacher would be an idea however in a time of panic your average school teacher will fail and could possibly make the situation worse. A combination of a closed facility, an armed SRO officer and a parent volunteer security watch couldn't hurt. Also, Ryan Lanza (the killer) went to his mothers classroom and shot her several times in the head. Even if there were armed staff the possibility of a stray bullet striking a pupil in a totally different classroom would be too high. People with guns are efficient at killing people, they are easy to learn and require little knowledge to operate them and be lethal, this is why they are chosen to kill with. Guns are not bad and I personally think the laws pertaining them should be more relaxed, assholes with guns ruin it for the rest of the responsible gun owners.

CBS 2 has obtained the letter sent home to parents describing the new safety protocols:

Dear Members of our Sandy Hook Family,

Our district will be implementing a security system in all elementary schools as part of our ongoing efforts to ensure student safety. As usual, exterior doors will be locked during the day. Every visitor will be required to ring the doorbell at the front entrance and the office staff will use a visual monitoring system to allow entry. Visitors will still be required to report directly to the office and sign in. If our office staff does not recognize you, you will be required to show identification with a picture id. Please understand that with nearly 700 students and over 1000 parents representing 500 SHS families, most parents will be asked to show identification.

Doors will be locked at approximately 9:30 a.m. Any student arriving after that time must be walked into the building and signed in at the office. Before that time our regular drop-off procedures will be in place. I encourage all parents to have their children come to school and return home on the bus and to remain in school for the entire school day. The beginning and ending of our school day are also important instructional times and therefore we want all our students to reap the benefits of full participation in our program.

We need your help and cooperation for our system to work effectively. Our office staff is handling multiple tasks. Though they will work diligently to help you into the building as quickly as possible, there may be a short delay until someone can view you on the handset and allow you to come in electronically. There are times during the day when office personnel are on the telephone, addressing student concerns, or in the copy room; there are other times when only one person is in the front office. Please help our staff by identifying yourself and provide your child’s name.

Keep in mind we will be following our district guidelines which may need revision once we test the system.

Please know your involvement continues to be critical to our school’s effectiveness and your child’s success. We continue to encourage and value your presence in our classrooms and are counting on your cooperation with the implementation of this safety initiative.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hochsprung

Trying not to read about it too much, but I heard the guy's mom was a teacher there, and that she might have been one of the victims... she might have been his target?

GAH, then he offed himself. More than that asshat joker guy did... but if you have beef w./ your mother, you take her out + 20+ others?!?!?!

GAH>>>>>>>>>>

When I add up the crazies + the pervs + the various "bad" folks, I end up with very few "good" folks.

while I agree - how many of them Stabbed China Kids are dead?

and, I say that about drinking & driving too - the few who cant handle it wreck it for those who can.

"taking away" guns is no answer. never is. and, also why it wont happen. it cant. guns are WAY to simple to make. I can go to Lowes, and have all I need to make a simple gun. with a mill & lathe - I can expand to some mighty fine weapons. they are less complicated than a carburetor. by far.
and, ammo is not to tough either - but it is the harder part of the equation.

Way different than what we have here. Buzzed in to a secure locked down area, then the admin of the school will call your child to the secure area or escort you in if you are expected. From outside, to secure area. Not direct access to school wonce someone identifies you as a teacher's son and unlocks the front door.

Awesome system! Too bad id doesn't work out for the first guy who is murdered by the bad guy. Also easy access to a gun gives you little time to reconsider your actions. Just grab you gun and go settle that score!

Moron that later.

I will get it when the CRIMINALS start obeying the law. You sir, are retarted, and one who is making himself a target.

Just how do you protect your family? Call 911? Yeah, that response time will make you feel all warm and cuddely.

Outlaw guns? What is next? Sticks? Rocks? Perhaps we should all recieve sporks instead of real cutlery? If you feel that you do not need a gun, then do not put your ill advised beliefs upon me.

That is just stupid thinking that that person would have not done some harm without a gun. It is not the inatimant object that causes death. It is the flesh that holds such weapon.

My God !

Kids? Cowards don't come any lower than this.

And now to pile the Gun Control Idiots on top of an American Tragedy as well? I guess they call them idiots for a reason, they just don't know when to shut the F*** up.

No score to settle. You see, anti gun folks, much like yourself, see it as a bad thing that we are allowed to have weapons. But, you also feel the need to coddle the perpatrtaitors. No need for a victim to protect themselves. Geeze!

Yes, I suppose I do see a difference. Buzzed in, two levels. Nice prison system there.....

In any event, I would be willing to bet that a teachers child would be let in without much (if any) questions, even in 'the schools up there'. 'Hey, I have to get my mom to sign this. Buzz me in, m'kay? Bzzt Thanks!'

You want to carry? become a cop or join the military. Otherwise your just a puss. with dick envy.

Only cowards cary guns in fear of what "might happen" And yes, the criminals are cowards to! Back in the day, scores were settled with words and fists. Now any cowardly little scronny punk can carry a gun and shoot someone. But hey, its your right...

Wow. Just. Wow.

Should ordinary citizens have access to fire extinguishers? After all, only cowards have a fire extinguisher in fear of what 'might happen'. You should just let the fireman handle it! It only takes a few minutes for them to get to you after you call....

Damn guys, no reason to insult the guy because he expressed an opinion.
He did spell "your" in the wrong context when it should have been you're, still no reason for the name calling.

You think that is the only reason for calling him an Idiot? You think your reasoning with the 'your' or "you're" really makes a difference?
There are two parts to HIS name calling.
You are not far behind him in line....
