" Authorities say at least 26 people, including 18 children, were killed Friday when a gunman clad in black military gear opened fire inside a Connecticut elementary school.
A law enforcement official said the shooter, who is dead, was from New Jersey and had ties to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown. Authorities recovered a Glock and Sig Sauer 9mm handgun, but it was unclear who killed the shooter, who wore black combat garb and a military vest.
Local news outlets report that the shooting occurred inside a kindergarten classroom, and that all the pupils in that classroom are unaccounted for.
An official with knowledge of the situation said the 20-year-old gunman, whose name has not been released, also had a .223-caliber rifle. The motive is not yet known.
Police are also questioning another man in connection with the shooting. Witnesses told the Connecticut Post that a handcuffed man, dressed in camouflage, was led out of a nearby woods by officers.
Shortly after 9:40 a.m., authorities reported that a shooter was in the main office of the school. A person in one room had "numerous gunshot wounds," police told the Hartford Courant.
A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher was shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital. Local news outlets also reported that the principal was among those shot.
Parent Lisa Procaccini told Fox News that her daughter was sitting in a classroom when she and others heard gun shots.
"She was in a small class -- a reading group and they started hearing bangs," Procaccini said. "Her teacher, and I’m grateful for this, rushed kids into the bathroom and locked the door. They told kids it was hammering and tried to keep them calm.”
"Children were crying," Procaccini said. "She did tell me about a little boy that was in a police officer’s arms, bleeding. I don’t know if she gets it."
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said two firearms were recovered from the scene. "

My kids school is locked down. You can't get in unless you are buzzed in and that only gets you into the lobby were you can speak to an administrator who then will call your child out or escort you in.
You know what.. F-this there is no common sence left in the world, just give your kids a gun while you are at it, they are probably as smart and as responsible as the other nutjobs running around with guns anyhow.

If you met some of the educator that I have known, you might say never mind. I had seen a lot of teachers lose it. I know where we need to start employing returning Veterans. We need a good guy, bad ass, at every large gathering location. Could be a dual roll position or something.

Metal detectors are all fine and dandy, now you have someone inside your school with a ceramic knife that is going to, you guessed it, kill people. An armed teacher would be an idea however in a time of panic your average school teacher will fail and could possibly make the situation worse. A combination of a closed facility, an armed SRO officer and a parent volunteer security watch couldn't hurt. Also, Ryan Lanza (the killer) went to his mothers classroom and shot her several times in the head. Even if there were armed staff the possibility of a stray bullet striking a pupil in a totally different classroom would be too high. People with guns are efficient at killing people, they are easy to learn and require little knowledge to operate them and be lethal, this is why they are chosen to kill with. Guns are not bad and I personally think the laws pertaining them should be more relaxed, assholes with guns ruin it for the rest of the responsible gun owners.

Our district will be implementing a security system in all elementary schools as part of our ongoing efforts to ensure student safety. As usual, exterior doors will be locked during the day. Every visitor will be required to ring the doorbell at the front entrance and the office staff will use a visual monitoring system to allow entry. Visitors will still be required to report directly to the office and sign in. If our office staff does not recognize you, you will be required to show identification with a picture id. Please understand that with nearly 700 students and over 1000 parents representing 500 SHS families, most parents will be asked to show identification.
Doors will be locked at approximately 9:30 a.m. Any student arriving after that time must be walked into the building and signed in at the office. Before that time our regular drop-off procedures will be in place. I encourage all parents to have their children come to school and return home on the bus and to remain in school for the entire school day. The beginning and ending of our school day are also important instructional times and therefore we want all our students to reap the benefits of full participation in our program.
We need your help and cooperation for our system to work effectively. Our office staff is handling multiple tasks. Though they will work diligently to help you into the building as quickly as possible, there may be a short delay until someone can view you on the handset and allow you to come in electronically. There are times during the day when office personnel are on the telephone, addressing student concerns, or in the copy room; there are other times when only one person is in the front office. Please help our staff by identifying yourself and provide your child’s name.
Keep in mind we will be following our district guidelines which may need revision once we test the system.
