I say we put together a list of any and all bands/groups/acts that aren't very widely known... It doesn't matter what kind of genre they play, or where they're based. If you think they're good, post it here. If you can, put up a link to a video of them playing whatever it is that they play.
Band name
Genre
Base of operations/home
What you think
Example of their work
Example:
Kimtak Building
Post-rock, instrumental, ambient
Hong Kong, China
I like it... it's very relaxing. There is a lot of subtlety to the sound that is rarely heard in modern music.
They don't have any videos that I can find but if you want, you can get one of their albums Here (Note: you can't really find their music anywhere, so this is really the only option)
Your turn...
If you want to post a Youtube video, use the code ...put the URL between.

# Band name: Kraftwerk (at least I don't think they're that well-known in the states) # Genre: Techno/electronic (more or less invented the field in the 70s-80s) # Base of operations/home: Germany # What you think: They've been around forever so they've got lots and lots of material... something for every mood really # Example of their work
Early work, think of it as analog techno. I like the looks on the people's faces since they have no idea what to think of it
Middle-ish (1980) Das Model, Rammstein did a cover of it some years ago
Current - Pocket Calculator... its an old song that was orignially played on early versions of pocket calculators where each number used a different tone but this is the current version. A lot of their stuff changes a little bit over time
- John Lee Hooker - Blues - USA Hmmm.... I like it because my generation and the following will have nothing but recycled, digitally-sampled techno-grooves, quasi-synth rhythms, pseudo-songs of violence-laden gangsta-rap, acid pop, and simpering, saccharine, soulless slush. they will never hear the vital American legacies of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Reed, Memphis Slim, Blind Boy Fuller, Louie Jordon, Little Walter, Big Walter, Sonnyboy Williamson I and II, Otis Redding, Jackie Wilson, Elvis Presley, Lieber and Stoller, and Robert K. Weiss. Sadly we are losing the fragile candles of Blues, R&B and Soul, and when those flames flicker and expire, the light of the world is extinguished because the music which has moved mankind through the decades will whither and die on the vine of abandonment and neglect. So to speak. God I love the Blues Brothers movies.
Any who, I'll got through my collection and find some really interesting stuff.
[*] Achozen [*] "universal hiphop" - blends of different types of musical heritage [*] based out of LA [*] considering that their first album has yet to be released, it is difficult to make a judgement - what I have heard, I liked.

[*] F**ked up [*] long form modernist punk [*] I think they're Canadian, but not sure [*] great stuff really... There's a decent variety in the instrumentation and vocals that just leaves you in awe.
[*] video coming soon
Because of the family friendly status of this site, I'll just link to the video instead of the usual embedded video.
I have seen them twice now, going again on Feb. 3rd to see Halestorm, Adelita's Way and Theory of a Dead man. Can't WAIT!!! My wife and I got to meet Halestorm at the last concert. Lindsay Hale and her brother are awesome! Great to talk to and truly down to earth. It also helps that she is so pleasing to the eye
- The Squirts - Rock/Pop-Rock - Orange County California (born and raised in Detroit) - One of many bands that bassist/singer/writer Matt Bissonette is involved with. This line up is basically Rick Springfields touring/recording band for the past several years. This is the bands 2nd CD called The Squirts II (Resquirted) and can be found along with many of Matts other CDs his website;
Nice idea for a thread. I'm always lookin to hear new stuff.
Here's a few of mine. Some likely know these, but they aren't exactly "mainstream" so some won't... I'm not the best at labeling genres, so bare with me.
Mad Capsule Market - Walk Japanese - metal/rock
Tom Waits - God's away on business umm... folk/experimental I guess
The Faint - Agenda Suicide electronic
The Black Keys - Psychotic Girl Blues/rock

I'll listen because a member of one of my favorite bands is involved in the project .
Tom Waits is great as well as The Black Keys who were posted above.
I like the band Fermata out of Madison, Wisconsin a lot. Theres another band that goes by the same name apparently and I wasn't able to find any videos, but they do have a Myspace page. They were giving out free cds at my old college a few years ago and I'm glad I grabbed a copy. It's good stuff.

My wife sounds a lot like that, she sang a Anne Murray song at my cousins wedding last year that I recorded. I'd love to play it here but don't know how.
- Devin Townsend - Heavy Rock - B.C. Canada - A heavy progressive rock musical genious whose music has included everything from death metal to instrumental trance. An amazing talent and well worth checking out if your at all into heavy rock. He has been the singer for Steve Vai, guitarist for The Wildhearts, created the heavy metal band Strapping Young Lad, and has recorded numerous CD's under his own name.
From his 2009 CD, The Devin Townsend Project - Addicted Supercrush....
From his 2007 CD, Devin Townsend Presents - Ziltoid the Omnisient By Your Command....
Inspired by a post in another thread (sums me up pretty well ) Lyrics in description # Band name: Pennywise # Genre: Punk # Base of operations/home: California # What you think: very edgy, and blunt. # Example of their work:
# Band name: Rotersand # Genre: Electronic/Industrial # Base of operations/home: Germany # What you think: Very catchy, makes me want to dance (if you call what I do dancing that is). Lyrics are emotionally driven and powerful. The guys in the band are pretty cool people in person # Example of their work:
# Band name: The Cruxshadows # Genre: EBM # Base of operations/home: Tallahassee, Florida # What you think: Very good group. Rogue (lead singer, heir to the Dupont fortune) is awesome in person. Great live performances. Their music has a way of connecting with the listener in one form or another. And the video is in Lego How cool is that? # Example of their work:
Already posted VNV Nation before, but I'll post another one
# Band name: VNV Nation # Genre: Industrial # Base of operations/home: Germany IIRC # What you think: All around great work. Inspiring lyrics, very deep. If you listen to the lyrics, they will make you think. Music is catchy and at times very moving. Ronin and Mark are great people in person. Excellent live performances, and again their music is something the listener can connect to in one way or another. Very calming and uplifting music at times, but also very heavy and energizing at other times. # Example of their work: Here's a few examples. Kind of hard to sum these guys up in just a few songs.
These three are in the country and folk genre mainly
Sarah Zimmermann is an amazing guitarist and a very talented writer that I met in Nashville: http://www.myspace.com/sarahzimm My favorite of hers is Driving On, but there all excellent.
Pete Best is another songwriter I saw in Nashville. His songs could use some fine tuning but there very good for home made music. http://www.myspace.com/petebestcountry Don't really have a favorite, I really like him for the way his songs tell stories. Quicker and Someday are very sad if you listen; Diamond in the Dessert and Gonna Die Trying have great messages.
Erinn Sherlock is an actual career songwriter that is trying to get into performing. She has professionally done songs, some with amazing lyrics. http://www.soundclick.com/b...lt.cfm?bandid=744801 I love Bullet (proof) and Favorite Mystery, Return to you and Not Everyone are very good too. Rich Man and The Thing are more pop. She used to have more songs up that I enjoyed a lot, so I'm guessing she circulates her music sometimes.

Personally, I'm still kind of out on it... right now, I'm listening to 2AM wake up call and the vocals are throwing me off a bit. Their first album was pretty much all low-energy ambiance.

[*] Band name Pre-Annette Nightwish [*] Genre Female Fronted Symphonic/melodic Metal [*] Base of operations/home Finland [*] What you think Tarja is a gorgeous, classically trained Finnish opera singer that brings an amazing range of vocals to the metal scene with the group she helped found, Nightwish. Nightwish's ability to mix Symphony with Metal is astounding and not only serves to add a depth to the music unheard of to up to the point of the release of their first album, it also adds an element that most people, even if they don't like either form of music, can agree is unique and in alot of their songs friendly to the ear. [*] Example of their work
[*] Band name Tarja Turunen [*] Genre Opera, Gothic Opera, Metal Opera [*] Base of operations/home Finland [*] What you think After being dismissed by Nightwish in 2005 by the members of Nightwish, Tarja went on to form a successful solo career in all forms of Opera. Her first complete solo album, My Winter Storm, was released in 2007 and reached 'Gold' status on the first day of sales. Being free of Nightwish to pursue her own career has allowed her to open up and test the waters in many, many different styles that would not previously been available to her through Nightwish and I think that this has allowed her to blossom into an amazing artist. [*] Example of their work
[*] Band name Lunatica [*] Genre Female Fronted Symphonic/Melodic Metal [*] Base of operations/home Switzerland [*] What you think Another great group fronted by an amazing female vocalist. [*] Example of their work
[*] Band name Leave's Eyes [*] Genre Symphonic/Melodic Metal [*] Base of operations/home Norway/Germany [*] What you think Yet another amazing female fronted symphonic/gothic/melodic metal group [*] Example of their work
There are more, Dragon Force, Epica, et al, but it's late(early) and I'm tired, I'll try to look them up and linky to them after some much needed sleep.

I second that. Devin is amazing! Strapping Young Lad was brilliant, his solo stuff is brilliant, he's gotta be my most favourite artist ever. Nice to see another fan on the forum. You should check out some of the guest vocals he did for Ayreon's album, "The Human Equation". Very powerful.
*iamerror *Nintendocore/8-bit *London, UK *In a word, epic. This cover/remix is probably one of the best I've heard. The funniest part is that apparently Peet hates Crystal Castles, and was convinced to do this song by his now ex-wife? ...or at least that's what I've heard, haha.

The sad thing is that I only found out about him about 2 years ago. I had seen the Strapping Young Lad "Love" video a number of times on a local access cable show, but I didn't know of him until I saw his name on another forum thread similar to this. I was absolutely stunned by the volume and variety of work he has done. Now he is an almost daily listen on my I-Pod. And I am severely bummed that I missed his show here in Detroit just a couple days after those videos were shot that I posted above.
California (used to say Bakersfield way back when, now says LA)
Thoughts:
Well, I can't say that I discovered them as it's actually the other way around - Back before they had a record deal (2005-ish), they sent me a friend request on Myspace. I accepted and found a fantastic band. At this point, they only had a couple of demos up on their page, but they were very good... Somehow, they were deleted off of my friends list and I didn't realize it. In the mean time, they've landed a deal and released two full length albums.
The other day, I was at a used music shop and found the deluxe edition of their latest album - remembering the story above, I bought it without hesitation. And I'm glad I did... Their sound since their old demos "Ashes" and "This Moment" has changed a slight bit, but I like it - it's more focused on singing rater than screaming. I can't really say much past that - I've had the CD in my Fiero since I picked it up... and haven't been able to stop listening to it.
Example(s):
First single from their newest album:
Cover of Blondie's song, Call me: (better than the original, in my opinion)
Older stuff: (wait until 3:00 in.... Maria will blow your mind)
-=-==-=-=-=-==-=- It doesn't hurt that the lead singer is obscenely hot
It doesn't hurt that the lead singer is obscenely hot
Maria Brink is ridiculously hot. Seriously, it's insane.
Also, Krysta from IWRESTLEDABEARONCE is pretty damn attractive too. See? Just those stupid giant sunglasses over her real glasses takes away from it.
Here's a better picture with her band behind her:
Oh, and here's a song:
*IWRESLTEDABEARONCE *Avant-Garde Metal *Shreveport, LA *Super heavy, really quirky, entertaining songs ("Tastes Like Kevin Bacon" features a Dixie horn before the breakdown), and just overall amazingness. I have to show many people photographic proof that the screaming comes from tiny little beautiful Krysta. They never believe me.
