If you start with a rear engine Porsche, vw, or corvair transmission you are good to go.
Some of the others you might need to flip the transmission over. By flipping it, you change the direction of the axle rotation. The issue then becomes a lubrication issue.
Many of the rear engine Porsche and VW transmissions have been installed upside down for mid-engine layouts with the accessories facing the front of the car.
The challenge with most of the setups above is that the engine will then be entirely behind the rear axle.
You could do a reverse rotation of the TH425/TH325 and get the look you want. They are autos, the but 325 could be had in a 4 speed auto. The easiest way to accomplish the reverse rotation is to flip the diff. The second easiest is to convert the TH400 output flange and remote mount a different differential further out to clear the oil pan.
You might hit up engine man to see if he still has his parts from when he was experiementing with this vernsion before going the audi route.

Some clear, some don't.)
