Fellas,
My tach is not working. How do I fixi it? Yesterday I took apart my instrument panel, and could not find a problem? Originally, my tach went erratic whenever I used my blinkers. In other words, as I was using my left/right blinker, my tack would go really wacky. Incidentally, my gas gauge was only working when I did NOT have my headlight on? I fixed that problem. What I did was focus on the straightning out the copper pick-up tongues where each of the two dash connectors plugs into the dash fascia. I believe I got them all straight, put everything back, the gas gauge now works. But the tach is still dead😟. The tach needle does slightly quiver when I put on my blinkers, but that’s it.
Anybody got ideas?
Cordially,
kevin

Hello
Had the same issues... you must check all the traces in the back of the cluster. Clean ALL the contacts on the plugs and the tach’s main board. Then check the wiring to the ECM. Validate all your grounds as usually the issue may start there.
regards
Danyel

Thanks Danyel,
Gee, I believe I completed the steps you outlined. I would like to see, rather understand and read, what each individual copper tongue does? Would anybody have a printed outline for the rear of the Fiero dash fascia? My rear section of the dash needs an upgrade.
Cordially,
kevin
Ps. The tachometer still is not working

There is no connection between the ECU and the tachometer.

Thanks,
OK, how do I find, and fix, the connection from the ECM and the tach?
Cordially,
Kevin
Ps. This tach problem all started when I (tried?) to fix my pegging temp gauge needle.

There is no connection between the ECU and the tachometer. The tach signal comes from the ignition coil.

Take the cover off of the windshield side of the instrument cluster, and look at the vertical plug on the console side of the dash. Most likely one or more of the traces that make contact with the plug has delaminated from the plastic flexible circuit board and is shorting out. The tach wire is white, #18.

Nail polish on the underside of the copper tab will secure any loose traces.

older l4 and all V6 in Fiero have "Tach filter" that goes bad. small can bolted to engine w/ 2 wire.
bypass w/ jumper.
But bad filter or tach and crap wire to either can short out the coil and quickly kill that.

Tach goes bad too.
from loose connection(s) to anything else.
Many claim bad resistors but more likely bad capacitors, dead meter "motor," etc.
