That's the way I view it also. I'm curious what the final percentages were? I'm not sure either side could have "won." It'll be a LONG time before WI will recover from this mess.

A few right wing comments posts here! I can see both sides of the issues. There are valid reasons for unions and unions also can abuse their powers. Wisconsin will be divided for a long time over this. I benefited greatly by spending my last fifteen working years in a union. I'm not completely sure how I feel about unions for public employees. When I hear about public employees getting 20% more than private workers especially during a downturn of the economy I don't think that it is right. I would like to see equality between private and public compensation. Maybe a bit less for public employees because they seem to have less risk of losing their job. I could be wrong.

Every state is divided over this for many many years now. Wisconsin just happens to have it out in the open for the moment. I doubt this process stops in Wisconsin.

Governor Walker’s Victory Spells Doom For Public Sector Unions
http://www.forbes.com/sites...ublic-sector-unions/

quote
Public sector unions have reached their high water mark. Let the cleanup begin as the red ink recedes.

Despite a last-minute smear campaign accusing Scott Walker of fathering an illegitimate love child, the governor’s recall election victory sends a clear message that should resonate around the nation: The fiscal cancer devouring state budgets has a cure, and he has found it. The costly defeat for the entrenched union interests that tried to oust Walker in retribution for challenging their power was marked by President Obama’s refusal to lend his weight to the campaign for fear of being stained by defeat. We’ll see how well this strategy of opportunistic detachment serves in the fall as Obama reaches out to unions for support.

This fight is not without precedent. Progressive patron saint Franklin Delano Roosevelt—who more than any other president set our country on a course away from the founding principles of limited government—knew that public sector unions would be the death of the social welfare state he worked so hard to create. Hence, he consistently opposed allowing government employees to unionize. Today, Greece sets the example of what happens when public sector unions gain the upper hand.

In 1959 Wisconsin became the first state to allow collective bargaining by government employees. The projected cost of supporting Baby Boomer union retirees now threatens to bankrupt the state, as it does many others. Scott Walker ran for office promising change. The fiscal medicine he is administering may be bitter, but it looks like it is starting to work. The state budget has been balanced. The unemployment rate has been dropping and is now below the national average. Property taxes are down. Fraudulent sick leave policies—which allowed employees to call in sick and then work the next shift for overtime pay—have been ended. The government has stopped forcibly collecting union dues from workers’ paychecks.

Best of all, the myth that union bosses represent their members’ interests has been exposed as a lie. Now that union dues are voluntary, tens of thousands of union members have stopped paying them. Membership in the Wisconsin chapter of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union (AFSCME) has dropped by half. Membership in the state’s American Federation of Teachers (AFT) is down by over a third. Given unions’ influential role in most elections, the national implications of this trend are staggering.

Walker’s message is clear: The key to bringing balance back to public sector labor relations and balance state budgets is to break the iron triangle of closed-shop mandatory unionization, compulsory dues collection, and oversized campaign donations to politicians that promise to do the unions’ bidding. If other governors take his cue and take up the cause, that giant sucking sound you hear will be the air coming out of union bosses’ bloated political action budgets.

The work in Wisconsin is not complete. The controversial law exempted police and firefighters, a political concession to get the legislation passed. Federal courts have zeroed in on this anomaly, striking down certain sections of the law because they do not treat workers equally. This needs to be repaired— by rescinding the exemption for public safety workers. With the recall election behind him, Walker may be sufficiently emboldened to do just that.

The power of private sector unions was long ago broken by many heavily unionized companies going bankrupt. While this was painful for both workers and shareholders, the economy motored on as nimbler non-union competitors picked up the slack. This approach is problematic for the public sector because bankrupt state and local governments cannot be replaced by competitors waiting in the wings. Yes, citizens can always vote with their feet, emptying out cities like Detroit, leaving the blighted wreckage behind. But isn’t Walker’s targeted fiscal retrenchment less painful than scorched-earth abandonment?

Chicago machine candidate Barack Obama rode into office to the tune of Hail to the Chief, promising the unions that backed him the gift of card check elections, ending the secret ballot that shields employees from union intimidation. He may well ride into retirement to the tune of On Wisconsin as the era of closed shop unionism comes to an end.

Wasn't FDR "god" for Democrats?

Google: FDR public sector unions.

A sample:

quote
F.D.R. Warned Us
James Sherk

James Sherk is the Bradley fellow in labor policy at the Center for Data Analysis at the Heritage Foundation.

Updated September 16, 2011, 11:11 AM

“It is impossible to bargain collectively with the government.”

That wasn’t Newt Gingrich, or Ron Paul, or Ronald Reagan talking. That was George Meany -- the former president of the A.F.L.-C.I.O -- in 1955. Government unions are unremarkable today, but the labor movement once thought the idea absurd.

Public sector unions insist on laws that serve their interests -- at the expense of the common good.

The founders of the labor movement viewed unions as a vehicle to get workers more of the profits they help create. Government workers, however, don’t generate profits. They merely negotiate for more tax money. When government unions strike, they strike against taxpayers. F.D.R. considered this “unthinkable and intolerable.”

Shame!!! Not appropriate under any circumstances ... and probably illegal, too. (Of course, within the past few months we have had someone here on PFF claim to offer a bounty to anyone who shoots our President, even reiterating that he is serious, but I guess that's somehow different.)

The key words being "claim to offer a bounty", and tho just as deplorable, I am loathe and hesitant to go into "don't look here--look back there" mode.

Oh man, I've been waiting for this news... I've gotta read this. I know there's one more recall vote waiting, it would be nice to see if they held on to all 4 seats.

EDIT: Ok, so they did snag that one seat that was narrowly won before. The Democrats there now have a 1 seat majority. I suppose this is probably for the best since with the results of this recall, most Democrats in the senate will probably be more likely to cooperate. I expect that most stuff moving forward will still get passed. Not sure how it works, but can't the Lt. Governor step in to break the vote or something? I really don't understand it too well at the state level... maybe that's just to break a tie?

The one lost senate seat doesn't really make any difference for a couple reasons. 1) one of the R's in that 'majority' they had was a rino; thus they couldn't pass anything anyway (hence the mine being shot down), and 2) the senate doesn't even go into session again until after the November elections, where the R's are expected to pick up a couple more seats anyway.

A friend and his wife both work in factories in WI (can't remember what they do... But it's something to do with furniture). They were very happy to see Walker stay. I assume there is a union at their work, as it's a big factory, unfortunately I haven't seen them in a long time so when we talked last I didn't ask. This was just brought up on Facebook.

I'm just throwing in a perspective. I don't know the worth of this but figured it was relevant enough to post.

Union members are far from a monolithic bloc. Not all union members are Democrats, just as not all of those who attend church regularly are Republicans.

Well, well, well. You've emerged from under your rock. You were one of the idiots that were protesting in Madison before you even understood what was going on and now with your enlightening commentary you have shown that you learned nothing. You ran away with your tail between your legs when this all started and you stick your head up now? Not very bright. Governor Walkers reforms have been working in every city where they have been used. The proof is out there. You claim that this is doom? You are spouting the Democrat talking points. Were you the guy that was interviewed that was crying because he lost? Are you going to take your ball and go home again? Maybe you should move to Illinois where the politicians there don't want to spend less than they take in. Their state is being run by people like you and I suppose that you approve of it.

Chris, it's people like you that are hurting our state. I'm thrilled that Governor Walker reclaimed his office and defeated Mayor Barrett. I used to live in Milwaukee and I left the city because of idiots like him....and you. I'm tired of being taxed to death. I'm tired of all of the extra fees that were added to my tax bill and not called taxes ( so the politicians could claim no tax increase ). I'm tired of all the extra costs related to excessive spending and wasted money. I'm tired of the Democratic spin on everything and the lack of respect for the general public......

"even with you Republicans winning this election you are sealing your own doom. The dissent within your own party, the constant back stabbing, lieing, cheating and poll rigging, the tenacious disregard for common decency and the way of life, and your un ending lust for more and more money will be your undoing."

This quote made me laugh even harder at you. Switch that to the Democrats and you are spot on. Dissent within the party? Talk to Kathleen Falk.....the union choice for the Democratic nominee for governor. Backstabbing? Again....Falk and Barrett. Cheating? People registering usning a utility bill with "OCCUPANT" as the listed owner and the union backed 'poll watcher' demanding that it be accepted as proof of residence. ( Voter ID is on hold due to Democratic challenges to the law ) Disregard for common decency? You were at the Capitol in Madison for the protests. Go back and take a look at the videos....if you have the balls to. Unending lust for more money? Who's cutting taxes? Who is cutting spending? It isn't the Democratic side ( that means you if you didn't understand ).

Get a grip, there, buddy.......you are a sore loser.

We need to get this state back on it's feet. We need the mine that the Democrats blocked.....lots of jobs that didn't happen just because Democrats didn't want to give Governor Walker something positive during his tenure. Democrats played politics with peoples lives and that's disgraceful.

Shame on you, Chris.....

Nope, I don't agree. I would be more inclined to believe Toddster, but I don't. I don't believe the dumbocrats can learn any more than I believe the repulsivecans can learn. There is no way to classify a belief of the voters. I am inclined to believe that the catch phrase I heard is true. A catch phrase of the Scott Walker effort. "The trend is my friend". Very true. Since the Act 10 law was passed in Wisconsin, forced union membership to get a job was made illegal. I am not sure which union it was but I'd bet the results echo any other unions. Since Act 10, union membership in X union went from 62,818 down to 28,745. Not that republicans are against unions. I am not. I think a union would have benefited me in my vocation. My thoughts are that unions have become more become political than worker concerned. Political in every dirty sense of the word. "What's in it for me ? How can I get more ? "

Sealing our own doom ? It more appears that you believe yours was sealed. Haha, . Our undoing ? It more appears that we accomplished your undoing. Haha, ! Yes with each and every action, there sure is an equal or greater reaction. As you have found out., Haha. . When we are sitting together huddled around a trashcan, burning useless dollars we so treacherously fought for, to stay warm ? Haha, . At least we will have more useless dollars as the union pukes will have less.
It would be a shame if the future of this state, this country and as you fear it, the fate of the entire world are now forever sealed. All because of union greed. Perhaps it's not a shame. Perhaps your buddy is not wrong. He says that "democracy as we know it" is now gone. He never knew democracy. Democracy does not force you to join a union to get a job. Democracy does not get you a "do over" 'cause you don't like the outcome. Heh, actually democracy did get you a "do over". Do you want another, ?
Your post does have a shred of truth.

The unions have been destroying themselves. The unions are blaming everyone else for their problems. The unions are incapable of fighting within themselves to correct their problems.

Did Scott Walker say "Let's move FORWARD" in the speach he gave afterward?

Well, the unions in San Jose didn't waste any time putting up a court challenge to a measure past last night to reform the city's ailing pension program:

Actually, I admire his guts & the stand he took.

But that was never the question.
I was struck at how no one here mentioned his use of that "socalist" word "FORWARD".
It was a pretty big deal when it was used by "The Other Side".
You know, the side that points out what it means when it is used by "the other side".

And I really don't care, but it does provide ample excuse to remind those that originally pointed out that it had a "secret meaning"................then.

And in a political thread no less.

I saw where Obama's official spokesman said the Mn election didn't go "as they had hoped" it would. I wonder if cheese was on the White House dinner menu last night?

So far all I hear is "Bleat" and "This means nothing"

I could use a Neptune quote and go "We won, Suck it"..
Or give an honest opinion.. .. Ya feeling evil.. "Suck it"

If you want to ask questions.. Ask how Barrett raised 18 million, (unions n stuff).. but only spent 3 mil.. Big question.. where did the other 15 go?

I'll play.
I noticed that too. It surprised me to see that slogan. I did not mention it because of obvious observation. There was nothing even close to resembling socialism in the Walker platform.
This does not negate the truth that the more infamous socialist experiments have been led by brutal regimes/dictatorships. Forward was the motto for them. That Obama used the same motto, that Obama espouses the same socialist ideology such as them, it should raise an eyebrow.

I was wondering about that myself. Rumor has it that the rest went to the unions to pay for the ' Get Out The Vote " and that's not considered a political expense......

Some thoughts -

This has to be the worst icon the left could have come up with.

A fist - to show the state of Wisconsin that the unions were going to force (thug) their ideas down the throat of the rest of the state

A star at Madison - To show the rest of the state that Madison is the only city in Wisconsin that matters. The rest of the state needs to worship Madison

-----
Compare that to the county by county election results

The northern counties hardly count - not much population there. Madison (and Milwaukee) went for Barrett. The rest of the state did not.

Anyways - The unions wanted a fight. And by doing that they got the rest of the state (taxpayers) ready to fight them.

Yes like the $20 wheel tax I now pay when I register my car all thanks to Mayor Tom Barrett! Only in the City of Milwaukee... And for the condition of that roads... Well when will those start improving because I sure haven't seen any improvements. The list could go on and on but this one really pisses me off. I kick myself every day for changing my address from my parents address.

This is how they get around saying they are not raising taxes. Raise or create new fees. During the recall Barrett was ask multiple times where he was going to get the money. He finally answered and said he did not want to raise taxes if he was elected. Good answer. He said he did not want to. He never promised he would not. Smart guy.

That is entirely true.

AND YET, for the September 2011 recall elections, UNIONS spent 21 to 23 MILLION DOLLARS MORE supporting the Democratic candidates, than the Republican candidates had to spend.

That means more then 23 MILLION dollars collected by non-monolithic union members got monolithically contributed to Democratic candidates.
I wonder why when union membership in certain unions in Wisconsin became VOLUNTARY, the enrollment reduced in one union from 60,000 to 25,000.

I often hear "it's a free country" as a cry from people. Well, here is a group of people that were given freedom of choice back, and exercised it.

Regarding Walker "buying" the election by getting donations 20 million dollars higher than Barrett, where were those people in September 2011 saying that BIG UNION money bought the recall elections then?
