Been my point all along Doc

But, how else can we make it all the way to a complete nannystate if we don't get govt and outside entities involved everytime something happens? God knows, building self reliance is no longer a desirable American goal or trait, and we must'nt forget to throw in a few frivolous lawsuits along the way as well.

Cassy Herkelman vs. Joel Northrup: Is There a Loser Here?

Joel Northrup, a home-schooled sophomore from the state of Iowa, did something on Thursday many of fail to do in out entire lives.

When Northrup bowed out of a match against his opponent, he did so with class, respect, and in the least damaging matter for all concerned.

His opponent-to-be was 14-year-old Cassy Herkelman, who became the first girl ever to win a state wrestling match after Northrup forfeited.

All over the Internet, the debate rages over whether Northrup was right, wrong, sexist, socially inept, or just flat stupid.

While some have argued that Northrup showed only disrespect and a certain selfishness in his decision to back out, Herkelman's father, Bill, seems to disagree.

In a reported text message to the Associated Press, Herkelman wrote:

"It's nice to get the first win and have her be on the way to the medal round. I sincerely respect the decision of the Northrup family especially since it was made on the biggest stage in wrestling. I have heard nothing but good things about the Northrup family and hope Joel does very well the remainder of the tourney."

The focal point here should not be the morality, or lack thereof, in this decision.

It should not be the disrespect the Northrups supposedly showed to Herkelman, or the stupidity of Northrup—who had a real shot at advancing far in the tournament—forfeiting.

It should not even be the battle of the sexes that rages on, heedless of progress or education, splitting people into camps and dividing friends.

No, the focus should be on the class that these two young people exhibited.

Here is Northrup's statement to reporters after withdrawing from the bout:

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Cassy and [Megan Black, the second girl who qualified] and their accomplishments. However, wrestling is a combat sport and it can get violent at times. As a matter of conscience and my faith, I do not believe that is appropriate for a boy to engage a girl in this manner. It is unfortunate that I have been placed in a situation not seen in most other high school sports in Iowa."

This young man removed himself from a situation that would violate his conscience, and did so in a matter that showed no disrespect to his opponent.

As a matter of fact, he stated he has great respect for both girls that wrestled this year in the state.

Herkelman showed she has a touch of class herself when asked about her opponent.

"He had the right to make his own choice, and he made his choice," said Herkelman to the Detroit Free Press. "It's not like he did what he didn't want to do."

Instead of maligning a young boy for standing for what he believed to be right, or yelling about how a girl should not be allowed to wrestle, let's focus on the respect these young competitors showed one another.

After all, one doesn't see moral fiber of this sort in the sporting universe every day.

Given their respective records, there is little doubt He would have won their match, had he competed. By forefiting, he pretty much destroyed his chances of winning the tournament, or even advancing.

He didn't say: "She shouldn't be here."
He didn't say: "No boy should wrestle her."

He did say, in effect: "I was raised to never beat up girls."

As the article says, he did something many of us fail to do our entire lives. He stood up for what he believed in, even at great personal cost to himself. And he did it without any attempt to discredit or hurt his opponent.

How many of us could do that?

She was there to compete, win or loose. Winning that way diminishing her effort. If he didn't want to beat up on people he should have gone out for band.

Well, they canned the coach.

http://www.fresnobee.com/20...l#storylink=misearch

Tyrell Blanche is out after two seasons as Buchanan High wrestling coach, marking the fifth change at the top for one of the state's most successful wrestling programs since 2007.

Blanche said he was relieved of his duties as coach Monday but remains employed by Buchanan as a campus monitor and an instructional aide in the Special Education program.

Blanche had been on a school-imposed, three-week suspension from coaching following his Feb. 12 ejection from the Tri-River Athletic Conference championship tournament for inappropriate behavior toward a referee that kept him sidelined through the Yosemite Divisional, Central Section Masters and CIF State Championships.

Blanche said he was under the impression he would be allowed to begin the Bears' offseason training program this week before being informed he would not be retained as coach.

He declined further comment.

Buchanan athletic director Chris Hansen referred comment to Clovis Unified spokeswoman Kelly Avants.

It was under Blanche's watch that Buchanan made national news in December when it was revealed senior wrestler Preston Hill had been charged with sexual battery on a freshman teammate over an alleged incident that happened during practice.

Hill maintained he was performing the butt-drag maneuver, a wrestling move taught by his coaches. Hill's accuser said Hill rammed two fingers up his anus during practice.

The criminal case was eventually dismissed, but not before Hill was expelled from Buchanan for sexual battery and bullying. Blanche testified during Hill's expulsion hearing that the butt-drag is a legitimate maneuver in which wrestlers are taught to grab the leg right below the butt cheeks. In matches, he said, anything can happen, even penetration of an opponent's anus.

In a prepared statement, Avants said: "Mr. Blanche's extra duty coaching assignment has ended for the 2010-2011 season and will not be continued for the 2011-2012 season. ... Buchanan High has not yet identified the individual who will be assigned the role of varsity wrestling coach for the 2011-2012 season."

Blanche replaced Hansen as Buchanan's wrestling coach in 2009. Hansen held the job on an interim basis during the 2008-2009 season as a late replacement for C.T. Campbell, who left one year after taking over for Dustin Riley.

Buchanan finished 18th, 18th, second, fifth, third and first in the team standings at the past six state championships.

I am sorry but if I was a wrestler and someone tried a 'butt drag' on me, the match would turn into a MMA event real quick.
