Self assesment is one of the most difficult things a person has to accomplish--mostly, because we never see ouselves as others see us. And, few people will take the time to explain in reasonable terms what we need to improve on. One of the big problems on the internet, is that thoughts/statements we intend to convey, rarely comes accross to others in the same way we meant them to. Sometimes, we have to eat a few words, pride, or crow--it's part of life, but don't be afraid to do it. Part of life's learning process. Me?--I have a list of faults a mile long--arrogance and self pride being at the top of the list, and I sometimes fail to keep them in check. I know I have said the wrong thing when Jane tells me "Shut up old man, or I'll come over there and kick your wrinkled old ass."

I recently had issues with 2 members here, regarding something they posted, but someone did take the time and effort to privately, and courteuosly show me where I was wrong. I am a more enlightened person because of it, and not likely to forget it. Old dogs can still learn--sometimes.

Old-Dog Question:

Is the above only complete after you tell the other person you were wrong?
Is admission to the other person a nessisary part of the enlightenment?

I often wondered on a personal level, if the private admission to one's self of a mistreatment of another is really enough to change said behavour.
Kinda like the step in AA where you have to apoligize to all the people you have wronged, to insure the whole program will be effective.

I wonder if "a good old-fashion public humbling" is part of the formula........................

Good question, Boonie.
IMO, while you may have the "enlightenment" on a personal level, you haven't really accepted responsibility for your actions until you admit it.
It's one thing to know you're wrong. It's another to accept it and take responsibility for it.

Just my 2 cents, which after inflation is really only worth about Z$3 Million Zimbabwe dollars.

Guess that depends if the other person was even aware you had a problem with them. As far as admitting being wrong, I just did--in my post in this thread. I'm wrong lots of times, and usually admit to it, but if it's going to result in a slugfest of a flame war, I'll almost always just leave it at that.

Yeah, I think we can all remember our school using the "pubic embarrasment" tactic in front of the whole class to correct behavour.

Of course nowadays, that embarrased student would probibly come back the next day with a gymbag full of AK-47's.......................

I guess when you live to be as annoying and overbearing as possible things like this will happen.

I find this to be most confusing.. and after thinking about it, i really cant understand how logically you would not communicate errors in behaviors between people.

And is it wrong to publicly admit that you are not a perfect person, and ask for advice on how to improve yourself? It seems like an obvious answer to a problem that you mentioned is hard to see by myself. The way people see me is not anywhere near the way I see myself, so it is not at all easy for me to do it when it seems other people have some ability too.

10 years ago today, two students just did exactly that. (Columbine)
