You know all those funny I.T. support stories? Some I'm sure are made up, but most are probably real. Here's a quick one that happened to me today.

We just got a call from a user who wants an external CD burner so he can backup his data.
He was told to just copy it to a network share, since they're backed up every night.
He then said he has a CD burner on his PC, but it's broken.
So, a tech goes to his office and discovers he doesn't have a burner - just a CDROM drive.

the punchline?
This dude is the Executive V.P. in charge of Disaster Recovery for the entire enterprise's computer systems.

Why am I not surprised? I swear, I think I'm gonna start wearing mouse ears to work.

Yeah, I know how you feel. I once went on a house call to the "director of wireless technology" at my job, I had installed his network a few months earlier, and now, it "suddenly stopped working". I had set things up in the normal fashion in one of the rooms in their house, simple cable modem, wireless router install and a few machines configged... I went into the room, and couldn't find anything. I asked him where the hardware was that I had set up, and he said, oh, it's under the crib...

me:

Yes. Under the crib,(wasn't in the room when I set it up) I found the cable modem and wireless router in a small shoebox, they were plugged into the wall, and the wires were wrapped around them. the antenneas of the router were bend towards each other and downward. They were both SOOOO hot, you could even smell that "uh oh" electrical smell.
I took the devices out and placed them on top of a bookshelf. At that point, he and his wife started complaining "oh, do they HAVE to be "out in the open" like that? they don't look nice, can't we just keep them in the box? bla bla bla".

I told them to TRY to hold the router. Feel that? That's HEAT. you're lucky this didn't catch on fire... and you put it under the CRIB?

Idiots. This guy complained again a few months later that his wifi kept dropping. They wanted me to go back. I refused, I said, lemme talk with him before I go...

I called him. I asked them a few questions. They had put their wireless phone's base ON TOP OF THE WIRELESS ROUTER. Same freqs too. I told them to keep them far away from each other...
There are some REAL winners out there. my latest: one idiot that keep effin up their blackberry. The latesttime: oh, you need to fix my BB, something must have gotten changed in the configuration...

Yeah, it's called "You DROPPED IT" It was split in half, and was cracked.

I asked her if she had ever dropped it, she said "Oh, I don't remember...

a few others:

Laptop "just suddenly stoped working" = MILK spilled out of it when I tilted it.

"Laptop "made a weird sound when I was working on it, then stopped working, now, it stops working after it's been on for a few minutes..." = I took it to my desk, turned on, something started oozing out the bottom "docking station" hole.... CHOCOLATE!!!!
(I STILL don't know how they got that much cocolate in there)

I don't mind "ignorance of technology", but it irks me when people try to "pull a fast one on me", I explain that I'm not going to "tell on them" if they goof up and break something, but don't LIE to me! (one time, someone said "oh, my keyboard just stopped working I don't know WHAT happened" and it turned out she had spilled a full 24 ounce coke in there... it spilled all over my leg when I went to swap out the kbd. she turned bright red, I fished the coke cup out of her garbage and told her to get me some napkins. I was severely ticked off...
not that she lied, but if it was something that WASN'T low voltage...

I now take pictures of things and add them to some of my tickets.

I find that, even worse than the "spillers" and the totally clueless people (even the highly paid ones) are the ones who "know something about computers". They know how to fsck things up with conviction and then cover their tracks.

I used to support a guy (a director, no less) in this category. He had a .wav file associated to every damned thing his computer did. Every time he opened anything he got a drumroll and an applause wave, among other things. (This was with NT 4.0 on a woefully underpowered thinkpad.) And he wondered why everything was so painfully slow.
He also had an electronic phonebook application called "Call Manager". (He didn't appreciate it when I referred to it as "Call Mangler" ) that conflicted with our corporate configuration. Of course, he wanted me to make it work, anyway.

bah - these are the folks who makes us money.
I find endless enjoyment watching these folk bumble thru their day.

yes, I do understand the frustration when these monkeys make it to management positions, but as long as their ignorance forces them to bleed cash my way - so be it. smile. joke with them. make them feel its not their fault.
