I saw this in another post and have heard it before as well as the Fiero being the "poor man's Corvette".
What about the other cars? We know about the guy driving a Bimmer 'cause he can't afford a Mercedes.

Is the BMW the "poor man's Mercedes"?
Is the Mustang the "poor Ford man's Corvette"?

What do think? What other cars are "poor man's" versions for the "real thing"?

I can't think of any cars off-hand, however with respect to motorcycles I do hear a lot of "poor man's Harley-Davidson" aimed at metric (Honda, Suzuki, etc.) cruisers.

I thought of the Solstice as the poor man's porsche. When it comes to Bikes, I like to think of the 1100 Shadow as the poor man's Harley.

there was the Porsche 914 - which was the "KMart Porsche" - tho this title really should go to the 912's

but, in order for it to be "poor man's" whatever - I'd expect it needs to be pretty cheap to start with. and yes, this is where the mustang traditionaly sat. and, nowadays - with the Saleens & Cobras - a plain old Mustang is a let down. first thing anyone asks when someone says they got a Mustang. endless days of ownership saying - no, it not a Cobra....or even worse - not even a V8. might as well just paint the dang thing pink & put hello kitty stickers on it.

The 2nd generation MR2 was reviewed as the "Poor man Ferrari" in a article from Motortrend mag. IMO a "poor mans Ferrari" would be a replica; that's way the lawyers aren't coming after Fiero owners but the builders of Ferarri replicas.

BMW is not a poor man's Mercedes. They are two high end cars. Mercedes shoots for the luxury/comfort aspect and BMW shoots towards newest technology. The S-Class and BMW 7 series are both over $120,000 new. BMW is more apt to use a manual transmission and the ride is much more sporty.

When I was in highschool (many moons ago) there was this "mini-corvette" that looked a lot like the real thing. What was it called and who made it? I think it was opel something. I'm sure many who bought the curvy thing were dreaming of a vette.

And the Opel GT is a great car for what it is as is the Fiero. GM made them both and should have continued to make them. The Saturn Sky is now the Opel GT in Europe.

From my memory of sitting in an Opal GT, it has MUCH less interior room than a fiero.

Parts are scarced for the Opel GT. Good thing is there are tons of vette parts that work. Especially if its been modified.

400ci street motor (327 race), long tube headers, 4" side dump exhaust, rollbar, vette brakes, custom widebody, extra gas tank to achieve a perfect 50/50 weight distribution. First completed 27 years ago. It has taken all competition at the track and on the street. These are excellant cars if you can keep them from rusting. Its got more interior room then a fiero cause they have small jumper seats in the back. Well, except this one.

Back the topic at hand.

I'm a poor man and I drive a Fiero. Does this mean that I want it to be a Ferarri? Hell no, I couldn't even afford the insurance let alone the payment. I wouldn't mind the performance but I dont want a Ferarri. If one was given to me I would drive it a few times then sell it and buy/build another fiero and.... a house.

IMO other cars are just "Rich man versions" of fieros. Why spend the money if you don't need to? You want a fun two seater? There are tone out there. You want fun, affordable two seater? Your options are very limited.

Now "coffin on wheels" I could see. I would rather be burried in my fiero then some stupid wooden box.
Of course in a fiero creamation is more common.

I think the Lotus Esprit was called a "poor man's Ferrari 308" (or was it 328? possibly both?) in it's early days...

really, it's just something ignorant reporters write when they're not clever enough to write something people might actually be interested in reading.

The fully macked out versions touch those numbers but they are generally under $100,000. BMW is 1,000,000 times better than BMW IMHO. BMW is not the poor mans mercedes, BMW is the smart mans Mercedes. We've had 14 Benzes and 3 Beemers, we won't go back to the three pointed star.

2008 BMW 750i $75,800
2008 BMW 750iL $78,900
2008 BMW 760iL $122,600
2008 Mercedes S550 $87,475
2008 Mercedes S600 $144,000

I pulled up briefly beside a Ferrari the other day. One of those nice convertibles. Anyway, I was turning right and he wasn't. The interesting thing is that on the way by I tipped my hat to him and he soluted back. Respect.

Sho' nuf we drive a poor man's Ferrari, and I also would drive a Ferrari if I could afford one.

It isn't the payment on the Ferrari that will get you....it's the upkeep. Every time a Ferrari over 10 years old comes into my shop, I get $2500.00 up front and the balance when it is picked up. Major tune ups are about $4,000-5,000.

Until you sit next to that new Z06 vette and smoke him hard because you weigh less, are mid engine, and have a 400+HP LS1 behind you he doesn't know about.

Extra points if your car has faded icky paint, and several panels different colors and did not put on an exaust yet. Nothing humbles a guy who's idea of performance is writing a check than a guy who wrenches his performance smoking them for fun.

I got no respect for the guy that buys his performance new on the showroom floor. I got mountains of respect for the guy that builds it or does it himself.

I have respect for someone who can do a job and afford to buy "new on the showroom floor". If the person works hard (that is the key) to make the cash. Why shouldn't they be respected? What about the business man who starts a performance car company? Maybe he didn't make the car, but he made it happen?
