This could he true but I highly doubt it. Many things make me believe its a faulty gear. Remember this trans is a 1990 so the trans its self is over 20 years old, not only that but the gear is plastic. Also one look at my assembly you could see the amount of heavy rust on the weights and top gear thinger. Plus all the teeth on the gear are layer over. If it was faulty internal gears the gear would have chunks and or big gouges all over it.

Rusted upper weights and gear
Many years of use
Many year on not used
And all in all a plastic gear from 1990 witch the car new would of been made in 1988 or 89 to be sold.
All this leads to a faulty gear not internals.
