Grand Am brake upgrade - a little help pleasew (Page 1/1)
Cajun JUN 09, 03:12 PM
I'm in the process of upgrading the front brakes on my 86 GT. I have been meaning to do this upgrade for some time now but only acquired the last remaining part just recently.

Anyway, the hubs have been turned down, caliper brackets metal removed as suggested for clearance, etc. My problem is the calipers will not fit. I need about a half mms of additional information clearance before the calipers will slide unto the bracket and over the rotor.

What am I doing wrong?? Another thing I noticed is the left caliper goes on the right side and vice versa in order the bleed valve is pointing up!

A side note: The calipers are new as are the brake pads. I did notice that if the outer pad was not as thick I would not be having this issue.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

Sometimes the brackets need a little grinding. Seems that not every application is exactly identical.

Some pads have shims on back that need removed.
Are the pistons fully retracted in the caliper body?

Yes, as said above the calipers can interfere with the brackets.
A little grinding will give you the full sliding movement of the caliper that is needed to get the outer pad on.
On mine, I also took off a small boss on each caliper to get the clearance for full sliding.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for your suggestions and comments.

I ended up shaving about a 1 mm off the outer pads. I am now able to install the calipers with no problems.
