The fact that there are so many priests in trouble probably lies with one of two situations. Homosexuals have long worked to infiltrate the church, and have attempted to bring discrimination suits (in violation of the First Ammendment), or simply to apply covertly. Becoming a priest would be a natural for the latter. Second, I'm sure that there were many in the 60's and 70's with some gender confusion going on, and the church seemed to be the perfect place to sqelch their leanings. The liberal press has no desire to explore these avenues, as they are still smarting from having to report the connection between NAMBLA and two men who lured a ten year old away from his neighborhood with a bicycle, then beat, killed, and had sex with the boy's body before encasing him in concrete and dumping him in a river. The Boston Globe (Owned by the New York Times) has had no problem with the activities of NAMBLA (The North American Man Boy Love Association), except when similar activities are perpetrated by priests.
No, it doesn't make it right. The point is, we should be able to feel reasonably safe for our children anywhere, not just in church.

And not just a few people - the majority of the human population believe in god in one form or another. This has continued for many thousands of years - therefore, there has to something behind it all.

You're both right, and you're both wrong.
The founding fathers were professed Christians, but they were also Freemasons. It stands to argue they were confused, since Christianity and Freemasonry have opposing positions on many issues. They DID, however, use the Bible as a template for some of the layout of the government.
