Meet the Elio, what color will you get ? Will be built in former General Motors factory in Shreveport Louisiana.

It gets 84 miles to the gallon on the highway. That means you can go from Detroit to New York City on a tank of gas – or drive from Shreveport LA to Dallas and back – then back to Dallas again – and still have about 110 miles left before a refill. How is that possible? Keep reading.

8-Gallon Tank, It can go 672 miles, or thereabouts, because it has an 8-gallon tank and 8X84=672. Of course, other factors will affect your mileage but you get the point.

It only costs $6,800. That’s about what you would pay for an outboard motor to power a rowboat.

Safety, Each Elio comes equipped with a Safety Management System that includes three airbags – a reinforced roll-cage frame, Anti-Lock Braking System, and 50% larger crush zones than similar vehicles. Preliminary safety tests on computer models anticipate a 5-Star safety rating.

American Made = American Jobs. It should come as no surprise that Elio will create a number of much-needed jobs for American workers. We’re estimating 1,500 jobs at our Shreveport, LA plant beginning in the spring of 2014.

Fun. It’s a blast to drive. Imagine every little errand, every daily commute being something you look forward to because it means you’ll be driving your Elio. It looks cool. And face it, you are what you drive, so that will make you one cool person.

Unique, Because of its unique design, people will talk. They’ll also stare, smile, give you a thumbs up and who knows what else. And while everyone is smiling at you from the outside, trust us, you’ll be smiling from within.

Eco-Friendly, This is a very green vehicle – and we’re not just talking about the color. Yes, it gets 84 MPG on the highway, but you’ll be doing your share of city driving, too. Fear not, with its city rate of 49 MPG, you’ll be consuming only 1/3 of what the average American vehicle consumes.

Power in Numbers, An inline, 3 cylinder, 1 liter, 70 HP, fuel-injected, DOHC gas-powered, liquid-cooled, automotive engine.

Our Transmission Mission, 5-speed manual or automatic. And yes, it has a reverse gear.

Fast Facts, Top speed is in excess of 100 MPH, and the 0-60 speed is under 9.6 seconds. So it’s not exotic sports car fast, but it’s not slow, either. And while a gas-guzzling muscle car might pass you, no one will pass gas stations like you.

Great Traction, The engine is in the front and it is a front-wheel-drive vehicle. So, with a low center of gravity and weight towards the front, you’ll get great traction action – even in the snow.

You Deserve a Big Brake, We will have 3-wheel disc brakes with the Anti-Lock Braking System on 15″ wheels. So your Elio will not only stop onlookers in their tracks, it’ll stop you, too – quickly and safely.

A Suspension as Independent as You. The first cousin of cool is smooth. So we’ve built Elio on an independent suspension with unequal length control arms, coil-over-spring and shock in the front and mono-shock with coil-over-spring and shock in the rear. The ground clearance is 5.75″ — similar to most of the passenger vehicles you see on the road today.

http://www.eliomotors.com/

Q. Where can I buy an Elio?

We will have sales and service representation in the top 60 markets in the US nationwide. By “infiltrating” this many markets, we’re making sure you’re never too far away from an Elio location for sales, service, or picking up an extra one for your spouse or one of the kids!

Q. Are options available on an Elio?

All Elio vehicles will come with A/C, power windows and locks, ABS and built-in stereo, and available with manual or automatic transmission. After that, it’s up to you! We have an innovative options plan that lets you choose what options you want, and we will install them at the point of sale. This allows you to make the options experience anything that you want! Buy it when you buy the vehicle, buy some later; it’s your call. We won’t tell you what package to choose from; you have the control.

We can do this because, as part of the Elio philosophy, we don’t want traditional Big Company bureaucracy to get in the way of outstanding customer service. Our goal is to put you and your needs first!

Best of all, our option partners have some amazing technology for you to choose from, with really no limits! So you can look at your Elio as being a total reflection of you – and a fun and forever work in progress.

Q. Once I make a reservation, how long before I get my Elio?

Our production plan shows the delivery of the first Elio in July 2014. We are limiting reservations to our first year estimated capacity so that everyone that reserves a vehicle will have one in the first year. Once you make a reservation to lock up a spot – you’re next on the list to receive one.

Q. What kind of gas does Elio take?

The Elio will run on regular, unleaded fuel.

Q. Are test drives available?

Ultimately, yes. We’re planning a series of events close to the delivery of our first vehicle to let our supporters get the Elio feeling. Once we are in full production, you’ll be invited to one of our ride and drives that will be much more comprehensive, fun and informative than a typical “test drive.”

Q. Is Elio a car or a motorcycle?

According to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) “Motorcycle” means a motor vehicle with motive power having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider and designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground.” So if it is less than four wheels it is a motorcycle. But what do you see when you look at the Elio? Fully enclosed, power windows, wiper blades, steering wheel, gas and brake pedals … you be the judge.

Q. Can I buy one now?

You can reserve your Elio right now. Click here.

Q. Where can I get more information?

The two best places for information are on our Elio facebook page and www.eliomotors.com. Stay tuned for other ways to learn about us.

Q. Can I drive this with my existing license?

Most states do not require a motorcycle license to operate the vehicle, a regular driver’s license is usually enough. Check with your local Department of Motor Vehicles to be sure.

Q. How much is insurance going to be?

We’re not insurance people, nor do we play one on TV, so we can’t give you a definitive answer. That said, we do expect the Elio will be as economical to insure as it is to operate, based on a few of the basic tenets of vehicle insurance: cost to replace (advantage Elio, $6,800 vs. $big), injury to occupant (advantage Elio with anticipated 5 –star safety), and service part cost (again, advantage Elio).

If it was rear wheel drive I would have been really excited. Front wheel drive, I'm only moderately pleased with the idea.

I like this quote:

"Imagine every little errand, every daily commute being something you look forward to because it means you’ll be driving your Elio."

This is how I felt when my Fiero was my daily driver back in the day. I didn't necessarily feel that same way with my Solstice though.

9 seconds to 60mph?
I wonder what will be the first engine transplant?
THAT will be the car to have.

P.S. I too wish it was real wheel drive.

Who is making it and who is backing it, I mean if this is just another Toiletota I want nothing to do with it. And to be honest I want nothing to do with it anyway. I can’t haul hay or animals so WTF good is it to me.

I applaud the idea, though I wouldn't buy one personally.

Many Americans have been wanting something like this. I think it will sell!

Front seat: 42.7 in
Rear seat: 33.1 in

so it looks like a 4 passenger but i wouldn't bet on it being more than kids in the back seat.

I have already told my wife we are getting one. I saw were they will be less than 7K I'm already thinking turbo or big engine swap. It looks like something to have fun with. I was reading about it last month on FOX.

Many people commute to work fairly short distances.. It would be good for them.

I like it.

I'd buy one of these before I'd consider a Smart.
PLUS, its made in the USA - the only kind of car I'll drive.

Eeven though the driver couldn't see out of it, it looks kind of odd without a rear window.
I wonder if that's an option?
No matter. You could paint one on.

These would be great for pizza delivery drivers or couriers/messengers. My old CRX gets 50-55 MPG and I think that's awesome.....80+ would be incredible. I don't think I would drive one as a regular car though.......but as a delivery/work vehicle I don't think you can go wrong.

Looks like they ripped off Arcimoto's concept.

The Arcimoto is all electric, though. I'd go with it before buying a GM ripoff.

I would totally consider that if it really sees those mpg numbers. For 7 grand I could get that, then have money for a crazy weekend car.

With a 60 mile each-way mostly highway commute, 80+MPG would make that a phenomenal investment. If I could afford it, I'd put money down on it toNIGHT. I'm not a fan of the looks, but then again, I'm not buying it cause it looks good...

Ok I want one.

I wonder if that 1L engine could handle a 50hp shot of nitrous

That compares favorably with a $16000 Chevy Cruze vs the $40000 Volt.

It would be classified as a motorcycle.

Elio doesn't have the money yet, but he is trying to secure as much government money he can from Louisiana and a $250 million dollar Department of Energy Obama Solyndra grant.

We will see if it even gets off the ground. He tried to do this in Oakland, CA but it failed so he is trying it in Louisiana.

Love it. Especially in red.

Odds of it actualy being built...I would have to guess damn near zero. And that's a shame.

There has to be a reason the commie Dems want to shoot it down...not enough union content or too efficient or not enough airbags. Once those issues are resolved, it will be a $20,000 0-60 in 25 seconds fiasco.

No, I'm in Bedford. SR37 straight south. 55-60MPH (sometimes as high as 70... ) all the way.

Yea, if this comes out.. I am buying one. For the price of the car and a bottle of nitrous or a small turbo.. I could have one fun little buggy!!

I have serious doubts about that. Would love to know who is bank rolling this project but, assuming it's not the taxpayer, then I'm betting it'll be out of business with in 2 to 3 years if, it makes it that long. If the bank roll is provided by the taxpayer, then I'm pretty sure it'll be here at least until the next election or two. You wouldn't buy one personally? Neither would I. I personally doubt there will be too many that will.

I wouldn't buy one. It has nothing to do with looks, but practicality. Sure it's be great to get that kind of MPG out of my commuter, but if I got a call about my kids being sick at school? Well, hopefully it's only one of them... and I don't have any of my tools sitting in the back seat. It's the same reason I chose to sell my Fiero. I need anough room in a vehicle to haul my tools around and to pick up things I need for the work I'm doing.

Good

I'd rock it. I have a need for a small car that gets good gas mileage. its cheap! low price is good!

Bad

Somehow I think despite "being US made" its got some Chinese in it somewhere...either in the car or bankrolled.
No mention of the powertrain/when its going to be available for purchase. Car could be a "Tucker"-- few built company quits...

Yeah, he's hinted that its not all American. There's was a line in the press conference something like "Built in America with 95% North American sourced parts".

Powertrain is rather vague "3 cylinder, 1 liter, 70 HP, fuel-injected, DOHC gas-powered, liquid-cooled, automotive engine" Kinda sounds like a Geo engine to me.

Available for purchase is set for July-ish 2014 so they say.

Take off the skirt around the rear wheel.. put a big fat tire back there and a spoiler on the back and I think it would be awesome.

I hope it gets rolling.. Giving this some consideration since the wife spends 2 hours a day in commute.. her car does very well, but this would get twice as many miles per gallon as her Honda Fit on the highway... could maybe do a straight up trade considering the way her car is holding its value right now.

Exactly what i was thinking.. an early nineties metro with the 3 cylinder engine. I wish I had one of those right now, too.
