I guess if all you did was commuting a few miles daily the car would be "useful". But highly non useful for long distances. I cannot see myself driving a car like that for several hundred miles a day going from Florida to NY. Maybe for myself and luggage, but no way for two people and luggage. You would still need a "larger" car to make trips.
I unfortunately missed the Denver showing last weekend.....I got stuck in insane traffic between Boulder and Golden, and then saw the grid lock heading toward downtown Denver..... I have heard the plant in Louisiana (??) has gone through some sort of approval for them to start up there. That is good news, although not good enough for me to fork over a downpayment to reserve a spot for the first allocation of cars. I've watched too many of these types of car companies go nowhere and leave investors hanging. (Carver, Praves, Lightstar, Mono, Aptera.......) I don't mind waiting until orders are being filled.
Looks like there is a "sports bag" size storage area behind the passenger seat....and more with the seat folded.
Video with some engine shots here (first time I have seen the hood up)

Well, the engine doesn't break any ground, but in a little car/motorcycle it won't need much power to be a fun commuter/grocery getter. Three cylinders, single overhead cam, two valves per cylinder..... Yawn. I rode a 1979 Yamaha 750 that at least had double overhead cams. I wonder who will supply the engine/transmission? Rotax? Can Am? I'll go see one, if it comes to Florida...

I still like it. For 6800$ I would totally buy one if I needed a vehicle. I drive my company truck, so I'm likely not a potential buyer. Besides I think I am done owning personal vehicles as soon as I get rid of this Fiero in my garage.
I lke it but if you look at it there is a lot that could have been done to make this car more desirable to look at.... right now it looks like a can am got a facelift from 2 semi's
The car will be in Savannah GA for St Patricks day, and Daytona for Bike week. A few details of the three cylinder engine are explained here: http://eliomotors.wordpress.com/
quote
[2/21/14] Q. Let’s start off with an easy one: What type of oil will the engine take? Can we use synthetic oil?
The oil that is currently specified for the engine is 5w 20, a standard motor oil. As for synthetic, those specs will have to follow as we are working with our oil partner to find the right blend for our engine. Oh, and the change interval for the oil will be just like most automotive engines, 3,000 miles.
Q. What type of fuel injection will the Elio/IAV engine have?
Our engine will be designed with sequential port fuel injection as a fuel delivery method. This allows us to control the fuel usage more accurately which leads to the outstanding gas mileage that we will achieve, 84 mpg on the highway.Engine2 The all-aluminum, liquid cooled Elio engine will use a timing chain. We chose to go with the timing chain because of durability.
Q. What is the final horsepower rating going to be?
The current spec for the horsepower is 55. We do have the ability, however, to move that number either up (over 60hp) or down to achieve our goal of 84 mpg highway. The fine tuning of the engine performance curve is in process now to ensure that we hit the targeted 84 mpg highway.Engine1
Q. Finally, what air filter will be used and can it be replaced with a performance filter?
The air filter for the Elio engine will be an “off the shelf” solution keeping in concert with the overall strategy of using existing parts where we can. As for a performance air filter, yes, you will be able to use them if you would like.
IAV designed the engine, and it will be built in Shreveport LA. http://wardsauto.com/north-...drives-iav-us?page=2 It will be availaible with standard or automatic transmission. There are over 10,000 paid pre orders.($100.00 minimum)

I have said from the beginning that I like it. I literally have no use for one though. I hope it catches on. Be a great car for a first time driver. I''d like to see a lot of people driving them, I'm not a greenie, but less fuel consumption on the whole likely means cheaper prices for all.
Safety, Each Elio comes equipped with a Safety Management System that includes three airbags – a reinforced roll-cage frame, Anti-Lock Braking System, and 50% larger crush zones than similar vehicles. Preliminary safety tests on computer models anticipate a 5-Star safety rating.
Top speed is in excess of 100 MPH
If you wreck it going 100 MPH, i think you and your passenger are gonna need more than airbags - or if some gang member in his Escalade hits you
Elio Motors Inc. Names Pep Boys as Official Service Provider for Enclosed Three-Wheeled Vehicle Set
Service and Maintenance
Yes it’s true. We are partnering with Pep Boys (Yes THAT Pep Boys) to be the official Elio service center. It’s no small thing to win the confidence of this leading national service brand.
With 800 service centers and 7,500 service bays, Pep Boys will provide Elio Motors' customers with convenient service options from one of the most trusted names in the automotive aftermarket. What this also means is that Elio Motors will now have more service centers than Volkswagen, Kia, Subaru, Mercedes Benz and BMW, to name a few. How great for you is that?
As you read this, our guys and theirs are deeply immersed in developing the game plan. So as soon as all the i’s and t’s are dotted and crossed, we'll go public with the details.
Meanwhile, you can be sure the best interests of Elio owners will be driving every decision. location by calling 1-800-PEP-BOYS (1-800-737-2697) or by visiting www.pepboys.com.
They redesigned it with enclosed fenders over the front wheels for improved aerodynamics.
Looks like they also moved the headlights inboard - I would assume also for aerodynamic purposes. I liked the look of the outrigger headlights better, but if this gets them closer to the 84mpg goal, I'm all for it.

One thing I really like about the Elio is they're letting everyone in on the concept to production changes. Most, if not all, of the big guys give you an Artist's rendition of the concept, and then do their best to hide everything about the build-up until the production model is released. I personally find it fascinating all the tiny little changes (from an observers point of view) they're making that likely have huge ramifications.
Same here. I've debated putting a deposit down on one but I just don't want to commit until I know they're really in it for the long haul. As I said in a different thread, say what you want about Pep Boys but they're a big chain, and if they're signing on as a business partner already, that gives me hope.
"Imagine every little errand, every daily commute being something you look forward to because it means you’ll be driving your Elio."
This is how I felt when my Fiero was my daily driver back in the day. I didn't necessarily feel that same way with my Solstice though.
Here's my favorite quote: "Elio Motors vehicle, driven 20,000 miles, will only emit only 4,500 lbs of CO2. So… the Elio is more environmentally friendly than cow farts."
I have a Fiero and Sky. I'm not sure whether or not I agree with you( not that it matters...shrug).
If these are produced, and I buy one, my first mod will be to install the headlights in the wheel fairings. Not only will it look better (in my opinion), but the headlights will be pointing in the direction I'm turning.
I put a deposit on one a few weeks ago, but I honestly don't see it ever going into production. I hope that I am wrong, but I guess that my money will just go toward funding another man's failed dream

If they can`t find a factory in Louisiana I bet they can in Texas. It`s only a hop over from Louisiana and many other companies are moving here. Why not Elio?
A Japanese company has decided against moving its U.S. operations to the former General Motors Assembly Plant
Escude, who signed a non-disclosure agreement, still would not reveal the company’s name but did say it manufactures air conditioning-related equipment. Nothing indicates that negotiations with the company will resume in the future.
In December, Caddo’s Industrial Development Board purchased the facility for $7.5 million using parish funds with the intention to lease it to Lichter’s California-based company. The group could assist auto start-up Elio Motors in setting up operations at the plant and sublease the remaining space.
That's a good start. Although I was envisioning round headlights (to match the round fairings) ala VW Beetle. While we're at it, we can put the side markers and turn signals out there, too. And of course, delete the original headlights. Then maybe widen the front suspension a few inches.
hehe

Why does it have to be in Lousiana? Check out other states...I know that Alabama has a lot of auto and other large scale manufacturing companies flooding into our state . There are a lot of other great states that are Justas eager to welcome a new industry.
The longer it draws out the less interest and credibility the ideal has.
