Hey guys

there are two wires going to the compressor for pressure switches, a low pressure switch and a high pressure switch. The two wires are different colors, one is black and the other is green with a white stripe. which goes to the high pressure switch and which colored wire goes to the low pressure switch.

I am retrofitting to a new four seasons compressor HR6 (new) and replacing with new switches but need to know which wire goes to each switch. Also I am putting in a new evaporator, dryer and condenser.

the following thread identifies them as colors I dont think I have. I have a dark green wire with a white stripe and a black wire. Is a dark green wire with a thin white sripe considered a lt. green color ? I would not think that would make sense.

What year and engine? Black wire is probably the one for the high pressure cut-out switch. You can verify this with a multimeter, check for continuity from the end of the black wire to one of the two sides of the clutch coil connector.

It is a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT with V6 engine

there is a black cap connector on the end of a black wire and another that has a broken off piece of white plastic in it that is on a green wire with white stripe

The black is the high pressure cut-out switch, and the green is the low pressure fan switch. You can see what the original switches look like here:

First I want to commend you for your posts on this topic. I know it has helped a lot of people and has me immensely. You did really great work on it.

Do you know for certain that the black cap at the end of the black wire went on the red colored switch aka as high pressure switch. and that the green wire with the white stripe which has the broken white plastic inside attaches to the other switch with brass center and white plastic surround aka low pressure switch?

Aslo. I have seen in the postings that it might matter which switch goes in which receptacle in the back of the compressor and as the wiring may prefer one order over the other.

It doesn't matter which port the switches are in. They read pressures off the same chamber inside the compressor. This info is courtesy of RWDPLZ in a response to me when I asked him the same question. I would also like to thank him for all the help and information he has provided.

Yes, you can tell on your old switches that the white one is broken, you can see the remnants of the stem around the terminal. The low pressure switch (which activates the fan when pressures get too high, if the fan somehow isn't already on) uses the same connector as the fan switch on V6 cars, that's the easiest way to remember. Plus the multimeter measurement I mentioned in the previous post.

FYI

I reached out to SMP whose A/C division is Four Seasons and confirmed everything there with the Product manager for the HR6 compressor lines and specifically the application to GM products including the Fiero. Yes the switches that are listed in the forum are correct. Also confirmed that the placement of the switches can be in either cavity as both are high pressure. They also confirmed as you guys have that the black wire goes to the blue or high pressure switch and the green wire with the white stripe goes to the purple switch or the low side.

I found the folks at the Lewisville Texas location, 972 316-3100 to be extremely helpful, The offshore Four Seasons tech support group, not as much) particularly Rick the product manager. I got the impression that they welcome questions regarding their products. After learning about the considerable licensing effort to bring about the rear taillights, I have grown to appreciate any vendor going about the considerable task of providing replacement products to our Fiero community.

Also, RWDPLZ and others, are you sure the very thorough thread from RWDPLZ regarding A/C upgrade was lost to a server issue. I thought I ran into it in a search recently.
