Hello everyone,

I'm very excited to say I own a 88 Fiero GT
I've wanted one for what seems like forever and I finally purchased it after I graduated college.
I can't quite explain my love for the car, i just know that i love it.
It is in fine condition with 104K on it.
Purchased it knowing it needed transmission work, turned out it was a simple cable replacement that i could do. It had some minor dings and a nose replacement but all else is nearly brand new.
I'm very happy with the fiero and plan to keep it as stock as possible.
It will need some lighting upgrades, for increased safety and style, which i plan to purchase at blacktopracing.com

One question.
I'm not used to the fiero just yet and it seems to idle strangely.
After it starts, it will idle around 1500-1600
When fully warmed up it will idle around 1k, but continuously every few seconds drop to about 900rpm while the oil pressure drops by about 5-10.
Upon start up the oil pressure will be around 60.
Any thoughts or is this normal?

Any chance it's your A/C cycling on and off rapidly (due to needing a re-charge)? Keep in mind that the A/C automatically runs when the HVAC is in Defog/Defrost mode.

And congrats on your purchase.

Welcome to the forum and do I dare say the madness!

You did not mention if you had a stick or auto.

I would say this is normal. My 86 GT runs pretty much the same as yours when first started, then drops to about 900 rpm (I have an auto) when the engine warms up and goes into closed loop. The cycling on the other hand my be caused by what Patrick has mentioned.

Wobbly idle and other changes in lighting or gauges are often because of corrosion in the ground attachments.....seems to be more of a problem on Fieros than other old cars.

My 85 SE 2.8 auto does that as well, chased it for a while and now I just chock it up to one of it's quirks. It's never been an issue at a stop light or out on the road and I don't have a/c.

I put some seafoam in the tank and it has since begun to run much better. I will update as necessary.

Do you know the history of the vehicle? If previous owners did not use synthetic oil or you are not sure if they did, then it would be a good idea to pull the distributor and check for sludge. As an original owner of one, I used conventional oil for the first 5 years and when I rebuilt the motor and pulled the distributor, you could barely turn the shaft with your hand. I had to disassemble the distribtor and thoroughly clean it to free it up. From that time on I use nothing but full synthetic oil and have had no issues since and no more sludge issues. Newer conventional oils may be OK now, but why take the chance for a few dollars?
I'm not saying this has anything to do with your idle concern, but since you are a new owner with a high mileage vehicle, it would be something to consider.

I just thought of one other issue that you should be aware of. This engine uses a flat tappet cam and most off-the-shelf oils do not contain the levels of zinc that were once available in all oils conventional or synthetic. You can buy high zinc content oils like Royal Purple's HPS or you can use store bought oil and add a product called ZDDP to it. The valve springs on a stock Fiero (either engine) are not high pressure springs, and so your chances of wearing down the cam lobes is less likely, but again, this is just added insurance.
