There is no Gen 3 LDK/LNF block, though. The LDK is a slightly higher output version of the LNF for the Euro market, and the LHU is the LDK with flex-fuel support, for the US market, and slightly closer to LNF rated output. They are all Gen 2 engines. The LNF may have been deprecated in 2012 in favor of the LDK, with production of LNF being shut down in the US, so that if one ordered a replacement engine after that time, it would actually be the LDK. The LDK has been around since 2009 though. It's not a Gen 3 block.
The LTG is the Gen 3 engine, and available since 2013 model year introduction of some cars.
The LE5 was also discontinued in 2012. It is not in any 2013+ model vehicles. The LTG replaces the LNF/LDK/LHU 2.0 engines, and the LCV/LKW 2.5 engines replace the 2.4 Ecotecs.
ZZP only uses GEN 3 blocks. One more time from ZZP:
GEN 3 LNF/LDK block info:
The Gen 3 block is a huge improvement for GM and solves previous shortcomings of the Gen 1 & 2 versions of the Ecotec motor. In fact, the Gen 3 block itself supports over 500WHP in stock form.
Improvements include: -Cylinder wall bracing that prevents sleeves from breaking out in high HP applications -Sand casting which removes porosity found in the older foam cast Gen 1 and Gen 2 blocks -5 pounds of additional aluminum adding internal structural support and solves the coolant jacket leakage issues with Gen 2 blocks
Stop saying it is a Gen 3 block, it is not, ZZP is WRONG it is just the Euro Spec Gen 2 block since the US spec Gen 2 block was porous and had issues. It is not a real Gen 3 block which is why all this confusion is occurring for the sake of this conversation the Gen 3 block will now be referred to as the Gen 2.5 block Ok?
I don't want people reading through this thread to think that ZZP is selling Gen 3 blocks when they are not, ZZP is misinformed and is not the standard for Ecotec information. I do appreciate the contribution and I am glad you pointed out to me that they sell the assembled short block because I might actually buy one from ZZP now, but that does not mean ZZP knows everything, they are just a business trying to sell products.

Ok, for the sake of semantics let me clarify: If you want to ugrade your LNF block or use an LNF/LDK platform for your turbo ecotec swap ZZP sales the upgraded GEN III block good for 500HP. They also sale all of the upgraded internal parts for the ecotec platform as well.

Im just in the research phase, but the two ideas i had without getting into ised lsf or lnf prices were the LK9 (2003+ Saab 93) which is turbo from the start. Or perhaps an LE5 and put on zzps supercharger kit with a smaller pulley. Id hope to be 250+ HP. I was an original owner of an Ion Redline stock and loved it.
For those with completed swaps... I'd imagine needing to get a remote oil filter as the LSJ was enought of a PITA facing forward... on the firewall in the fiero itd really stink. But is there ample room to jave the supercharger on there on the firewall side?
All ecotec engines have a cartridge style oil filter that is part of the block .It sits at the front of the engine on the drivers side beside the intake manifold and is serviced by removing a threaded plastic cap and pulling the cartridge filter up and out and dropping a new one in .It is completely out of the way of everything , so a remote filter is not needed .
Unfortunately the supercharger snout covers it to an extent. Its still possible to change the filter obviously, but it required a long extension and pulling it up, then over to get it out. It was hard enough on the ion with it facing out.... thats why i was wondering how tougg itd be if you had to reach around the block between the firewall to do it
This pic gives a better view of the room you would have for a supercharger and how accessable the oil filter is .With a supercharger , you would have the same problems getting at the oil filter as on a Cobalt SS. You can see the firewall does not get in the way of the filter housing .You can get an idea of the space available by looking at the blue intake pipe.It is 2.9" OD . So looking at the cylinder head I am pretty sure a supercharger would fit in because of how much room the stock intake takes up .

LK9 is a significantly inferior choice for higher power levels. The LSJ is a very similar motor with identical output, unsuitable for really high output. You need to look past the Gen 1 motors.
Go for LNF (most common Gen 2) or LHU or LDK which had a few improvements or the Gen 3 like the LTG. The LCV is another DI engine suitable for higher pressure turbo use, but it would be quite expensive.
