Would there be major problems if a muffler is installed in the cat position and straight pipes used in the original muffler position? 88 Gt 2.8. Sound and performance wise? I really want a borla muffler lol

Conventional wisdom says to put the muffler as close to the end of the exhaust system as possible, for best performance. But if performance isn't a great concern, then no biggie. That said, with the muffler closer to the engine, it may deteriorate faster, due to the higher heat level. The exhaust gases cool off and slow down as they flow through the pipe.

Do you have any good reason to get rid of the cat instead of replacing it with a new one, and to not keep the muffler in the stock location?

Never place muffler in the cat location, this will really hurt performance ,, the only place to install a muffler is as Blacktree said ,as far back as possible
the proper borla is the best performance option, next is the Dyno max turbo single outlet,,ask Borla customer servce for best unit,,call them!!
the new cats will not hurt performance
auto part store has pipe extention as smooth as possible ,hard ware store has installation hardware
when you cut the old muffler or cat off ,,retain as much pipe length as possible, file down welds

If getting rid of the cat wouldn't it make perfect sense to put a straight pipe where the cat is and leave the muffler alone? Just my 2 cents...

A good new cat will not hurt performance. Moving the muffler to where the cat is will not materially alter your HP on a 2.8. The 3800 crowd puts the muffler REAL CLOSE to the manifold and 300+ hp is not uncommon.
