First doing anything else is find 88 Balancer Unit on Bottom end. (in oil pan above the filter. can't miss it.)
Find new Or find a shop can rebuild yours. Either is hard to impossible.
That will kill all other plans and no point bothering to collect other data.

Balance shafts is in brass bearing and bearing likely worn out.
Bad bearing here will wreck the entire engine.

87 VIN R is PnP w/o the Balancer. Find and if needed rebuild that.

VIN R for 87-92 are all PnP but some big changes over time and need data for model year of car came out of.
Example: Later years may have a Timing Chain. Others like 87-88 only have the "weak" timing gears.

So, I should pull the oil pan and look at the balancer ?
The engine sounds like a lawn mower.....alot of noise.

Likely just pull the oil filter in the pan will tell if balancer is dying.
See https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum1/HTML/097703.html

could be dying cam gear etc. Many other parts are available but a worn balancer then don't bother fixing them.
Any engine w/ filter in the pan have balancer.
Worn balancer can wear crank shaft gear driving it.

Could try Jasper and other rebuild engines but many won't have them for a lot of cars over 20+ years.

Not sure what VIN engine an 88 Fiero would use.

VIN "U" NOS 86 long block here. Appears to be a DIS block (no provision for distributor)
Has metal cam/crank gear and provision for side mounted water pump.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/GM-...4:g:JCAAAOSwImRYSEiT

They also have a VIN "R". Appears to be a DIS block (no provision for distributor)

They also have NOS short blocks and NOS heads.

Awesome everyone. So is it the 8th digit on my VIN that tells me what I need to know?
So all are R. Is it a long block like on ebay, see link from fierosound

Not quite.
Ebay VIN R is a balancer type so ask them if it comes w/ a balancer. (non balancer has same spin on oil filters below right of lifter gallery.)
but the head won't take 88 intake manifold.

22P says 87-88 use one head. Ebay is yet another version of the engine and head is different and need correct intake but might work otherwise.

see https://www.fiero.nl/forum/A...130314-2-116541.html
dead picture but same thing https://www.fiero.nl/forum/A...14-2-074087.html#p19

so two options...
get another intake (89-90 GA and others used same)
reuse head and intake you have.

look like engine has no warranty.

(some 88-92 VIN R uses a timing Chain set not simple gears and cam is made to spin backwards to old versions. VIN U had them too but U have many differences and if you get them have to fix mounting other things to the engine. RA have picture of a long block VIN U many mounting points are different.)

Feel free to use the below dropbox link for 88 Fiero info that I've collected over the past 5 years or so, including the 88 GM service manual.

Hope this helps somewhat.

So I'm looking for "R" duke engine, but I assume its a short block that's in the 88's ?

I found what I'm looking for, but not sure if I should be looking at a short block or not.
