I went ahead and showed her the chairs. She's really happy with them! I got the white wicker rockers from Cracker Barrell. She said I couldn't have gotten a better gift. Sweet!
I checked the voltage. I have 180 volts coming into the house. I'm gonna call the power company!
I'll let you know what else happens. Thanks for all the help, suggestions, and relies so far!

Yup. The percentages seem to work out. You're about 3/4 of what you should be. Everywhere. I'm betting a bad transformer, drop, or meter. Maybe the meter base.

I called the power company today and they sent someone. He showed up pretty quickly. He brought two different kind of meters to read the voltage. Both of his showed the correct voltage. I asked him to test the voltage with mine. It still showed the low voltage. I believe his meters. I checked Amazon.com to see if there were any comments about reliability. Apparently these things have a history of bad performance including being inoperable straight out of the box. I guess I'm lucky mine worked for so long before it went south.
But, now you know you have the correct voltage in your house, AND a chance to buy a new tool
Very true!! I thought about going to Sears and seeing if they would warranty my multimeter but after reading the reviews, I figured, what's the point. I should have bought a Fluke.
I bought a crapsman clamp on ammeter/dmm once, had it for a week or so before I tried to use it for the first time. When I used it for the first time it turned out to be bad as proven by my fluke dmm. I returned it and bought a fluke clamp on ammeter.
Wow! Who'd have thought?! Even cheap digital meters are usually pretty accurate. (Well... Right up until they're not, I suppose.)
I kept asking myself why your electronics and lights still worked normally. 90 volts is low enough that your stuff should have been really unhappy. Never occurred to me that the meter would be bad.

Yeah, I know! And even weirder is that it was working incorrectly in a consistant way! It kept telling me the same wrong voltage. Very strange for a digital instrument to behave like that.
