I was in the first graduating class at Doherty H.S. back in 1976. I lived in Village 7 off of Academy Blvd. Is that in your school's neighborhood? I always thought I'd move back; I loved living in the Springs! I currently teach in a middle school. Yep, the kids are fine-ti's the rest of it.

Not to mention the added bonus that I am now allowed to carry a gun and put the ones that refuse to follow the rules in some serious detention!

I did the opposite. I jumped out of college with a BS in Police Administration and babysat some of Chicago's finest gang-bangers for over 4 years (I've been teaching for almost 26 years now) before deciding that education, work-ethic, dedication, time on the job, taking on extra jobs and responsibilities, and having appropriate skill-sets were all trumped by paying off the local politician when it came time for promotions. After deciding I didn't want to spend the rest of my career in a green shirt, I went back to school to get my Masters in American History( I was going to get certified in math, but the great state of IL changed the rules a few months prior to completing my last 2 math classes)and to take a 33% pay cut to become a teacher. I often kid that at the prison, at least I didn't have to deal with the inmates' parents. Ironically, quitting corrections had nothing to do with the inmates or the environment and everything to do with promoting incompetence; although I liked me "superiors" and respected their "authority," having functionally illiterate "superiors" who were getting promoted was more than I could take. God Bless you!

So you probibly know Dale Hesser?
I talk to him about once-a-week.
He is invaluble to me when dealing with my Authority 22.

The setting table setup looks fairly similar but the GS machines (at least from a quick glance at the AMF's) seem less mechanically complicated; they use a series of drive belts and retractable ejector flaps to drop the pins into their stations.

My boss orders the supplies, I haven't met anyone big within the company though the president of Brunswick bowls at our center since its closest to home office. It would be wicked-awesome if we got one of those Authority 22's, though. Our secondhand Phoenix-S is a piece of utter crap.

Hey! I've been to St. Vincent's Hospital in Indianapolis! I wrote all of the pathology software that the internal labs use, and the embedded AmeriPath laboratory. I wrote their accessioning, gross / micro reporting, and the reporting software for them. It was a pretty decent hospital. I also got the Norwalk while I was there, picked it up at an Olive Garden or something... totally sucked. They let me come to work that day because they said... "well, this IS a Hospital..."

Nice! You live in New Orleans? I love New Orleans... I haven't been there since my daughter was born, but I used to drive out there at least every year for Mardi Gras from Florida... I've probably been there at least a dozen times. We ended up making some really good friends in Slidell. What a lot of non New Orleaners don't realize is that most of the towns have their own Mardi Gras parades leading up to Fat Tuesday... like the weekend before, etc. I never knew this until my friends invited us up a few days before and Slidell had their own huge parade... thought it was pretty cool.

I love the frozen dacquari shops too. I'll never forget this one time when I went in there (it was like -5 degrees outside) and some guy came in and ordered a GALLON JUG of frozen dacqueri (sp?). I forget the flavor / color... anyway, he said... "I'm going to need a gallon, I've got a long drive ahead of me..." it was both disturbing and hilarious at the same time.

So!!! You probably know what MUMPS is then? It's such a cool programming language that doesn't get a lot of respect anymore. Although I fled MUMPS programming as soon as I got the chance, I still get letters from Henry Elliot now and then asking me if I want to get back into it. I worked with a lot of those systems. Antrim billing and lab, as well as IDX billing... great times.

Was Care Centric one of the people you worked with? They started out life as InfoMed, then were bought out by a consulting company called Simeone Central, and then bought out by an Atlanta based company called Care Centric. It was home hospice health care stuff... but was a pretty cool company. The new company pretty much destroyed their product. Care Centric was rather unorganized, and InfoMed was always "making money." It would get passed around sort of like a cheap whore... until finally CareCentric killed it. Not sure what CareCentric still does... but they finally closed the office down here... they're masters of throwing good money after bad, and taking good money away from bad things. I think it's because they constantly change CEOs... (they had some real bad ones).

I wish! This time of year, I could use the break from the frozen North! It's not the same city it was before Katrina IMO. A lot of the people that made "Nawlins" what it was (the insane asylum built on a sponge) got relocated after the hurricane, especially the musicians from the 9th Ward. I miss the old "Nawlins" myself. It's getting too gentrified for my tastes.....kind of like a Disney World version of New Orleans.

No, the family has (or better said...had) properties there.... that was before the levees broke and washed two of the houses away. They still have rental properties in Baton Rouge and Monroe, though...and a couple in New Orleans proper.

We are still using IDX for billing and scheduling. I don't do any programming so to speak, I keep everything up and running so others can do their job.
No CareCentric wasn't one of them.

I have been a US Customs & Border Protection Officer in Detroit, MI since 2004. Since 2007, I have been a member our Anti-terrorism & Contraband Enforcement Team. I was hired in right out of college.

I have been fortunate to receive some awesome training in a number of different areas and my current specialization is in detecting radiological threats.

In my career, I have seized over a ton of narcotics including one of the largest ecstasy seizures in the history of the agency. I have apprehended many illegal immigrants, arrested people wanted for war-crimes, murder, and kidnapping. I have had the privledge of helping kids be reunited with their families and help gather information in the fight against terrorism. I have received a dozen commendations including one of the higher awards that one of our officers can receive and I have never had a complaint issued against me.

Sometimes my job can be quite boring, but other times it's very exciting and worthwhile, and other times, it's downright dangerous and scary.

My favorite aspect of my job is meeting people from every corner of the world and getting to hear their stories. I have learned so much about the rest of the world and I am forever amazed by both the differences and the similarities amongst all of us.

You know, it was kind of weird for me (to say the least) when I was going to New Orleans (I call it Narlins too... hah) for the first time since Katrina. It was probably a year after the "cleanup." I forget if it's i-10 or i-11 or whatever that I drive up on, but the entire raised highway on both sides was completely surrounded by fenced in empty property lots, flat concrete pads with nothing on them. Huge parking lots with a grassy mound in the center of them, and then every so often, a huge brick or concrete building with no windows or anything else in it. It was really, really weird.

As far as the music... they've really tried to bring a lot of that back. The Jazz is gone... hah... didn't know there was Jazz in Utah... replaced by the Hornets anyway... but there's a whole segment of town that the city has tried desperately to "bring back" a lot of it's culture. They've encouraged people with music abilities and people who owned a lot of the jazz clubs to return from Texas back to New Orleans. I think you'll see it return, but there sure was a lot of destruction, and most of the old jazz players were too old to leave, and just stayed there (many of them died). Anyway... I think you'll see it come back. It won't be like it was, but there's still enough people there to bring it back. I watched a documentary on it too a while back. Let me see if I can find it on YouTube.

Crap... I can't find it. I think it was on PBS...

Hah... another person who knows IDX... that's awesome. Are a lot of those companies still using the old AS/400 dumb terminals, or are they using IBM Reflections?

I work for a Canadian owned company that supplies formed pieces of two ply sheet metal to transit bus manufacturers. It's a lot of cutting, forming, welding and sometimes beating the sheet out of metal. May not make me a millionaire but I enjoy it and it pays the bills. We also do stuff with wood, flooring, and soon to be insulation but I just usually work with the metal.

Yeah, pretty much everything I've done has been in Detroit. The fellow I arrested was an officer for the Slobodan Milosevic regime during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 90's. Apparently he skipped out of Yugoslavia and made his was to Canada and was living a normal life there. He had an Interpol warrant for his arrest and we brought him in when he was entering the US for business reasons. I don't know what the final disposition but I imagine that he went before the Hague.

I also got the Norwalk while I was there, picked it up at an Olive Garden or something... totally sucked. They let me come to work that day because they said... "well, this IS a Hospital..."

I don't know what the labs are using anymore as GE has taken over the Clinical engineering of everything. I don't screw around with the programming, they don't pay me enough to even try.. LOL. I'm strictly desktop support and my job is workstation operability..

No CareCentric wasn't one of them.

IDX! Wooo!! Along with TPX(AS/400), Centricity, Quest, Wellsoft, etc, etc. And I'm GLAD all I have to worry about is making sure the hardware is working properly. Ya'll can have that enterprise level programming and database management crap.

I used to work at UPS; started as an unloader, then went to swings as a Re-loader, was also an air driver. I considered becoming a pre-loader sup or a driver, but didn't like either choice. As a Sup I wouldn't of gotten anywhere since the center I worked at had maybe 30-40 people total including management. I didn't go for the driver position because of the attitudes of both the CM and our Union Steward who acted more like the CM than someone who would help when we needed union backing.

Short-shorts and a blue-collar work shirt do the job just as good.

Nice! I used to do that... back in the day (early 2000s) we used Acculab and Dialogic cards. I assume most, if not all of it is done with VOIP systems now, right? Or do people still do this through analog cards?

Yeah, I loved that stuff. We usually had a terminal, or we'd use IBM Reflections. I kind of punched out of it and went my own way with Delphi and C++ at the time... when layoff time came, I was pretty much the only one left because I learned the newer language. Then... the new management threw out all the new stuff, and hired back some of the old programmers again, but mostly just got new guys... even though everyone in the MUMPS community pretty much knows eachother.

It's a really weird group... seriously. Everyone knows everyone, and there's literally fewer than 100 of us. There's really only 3 or 4 ways to get out of Mumps:

1 - Sex change (there are four of us that have gotten sex changes)
2 - Join a Carnival or Circus (there have been three MUMPS people who quit their jobs to become carnies)
3 - Become an alcoholic and hopefully lose your job.
4 - Die from old age or boredom.

I am not exactly sure which one I am... but I snuck out of it... but the magnetism is strong... I still think about it a lot, even though I hate it. I'm always showing my other programmer buddies how in one system we developed for, every command was shortened to a single character, and stuffed into 64 byte blocks...

Here is a piece of legacy code from the VA that's no longer in use:
