A local Detroit rock station WRIF came up with the idea/gimmick in the early 80's and I joined up. I wish I still had my membership card but here is a pic of the back of one;

I think people have trouble separating the music from the culture. You can enjoy the music without "living it". Just sit back, relax, and soak it up.
QFT. I think Disco has a very strong connection to the culture of the time. Just like folk music has a strong connection to the Free love and Drug culture. I like the Bee Gees, but can't stand Jimmy Carter,

I use to go roller skating, it was the only thing to do that the girls in town also liked to do. Thats all they played. I broke my arm trying to impress a young lass and that was the end of my skating days, it was also the last time I heard any Disco.

I love this thread, and the music it represents. Parliament kind of reminds me of Kizz it was during the same time frame and the costumes are similar, just look at the shoes, and the music from both bands was fun.

Wow! Back in 1976-77 or so- the friends and I headed to San Jose, CA to a a dicso club a block or so from the Greyhound depo ( remembered the station as a reference point should I get lost or something). Anyway, I think it was a couple of bucks to get inside w/o the ego tripping door guards blocking your entrance. I don't remember any fog machines spewing out clouds, but I do recall the neon lights and this one song, Get Off. A friend who worked at the local record shop named Leroy knew exactly the song. The groups name, Foxy and the song was Gett Off.
My friends and I wasn't into the disco music, but a few tunes with an afro centric beat captured our attention such as, Lipps Inc, "Funky Town" and Chic. Chic had plenty of songs, but the only ones I liked were "LeFreak" and "Good times." Other-than-that, Parliament, Funkadelic, and Roger carried us through the disco era. For all of the other bands sold out and sounded the same. Even Earth, Wind, and Fire (EWF) sided with disco and bleated out a tune called, "Boogie Wonder Land," to which I hated it!

This was one of my favorite songs, for a while, in the 80s. Kind of punk disco, I suppose, in retrospect. Didn't consider it as such at the time, of course.
