Just got a free Compaq Presario 900 with a reportedly dead display. I have done some research and have discovered that the 2 main causes of dead displays on this model are bad backlight and bad inverter board. How do I test for this? Is there a way to test the board? I'm sure I could tell if it's the backlight. I can get the parts really cheap on ebay, but I just want to know which parts I need.

The EZ thing to do is buy a refurbished screen and swap it out. Careful with the inverter, it packs a punch.

I repair them for a living and the VDU will knock you on your ass and burn your finger so be careful with that. Check the cable and if there is no back light then the VDU is first then the screen. If there is a tab seperation on the screen then you will see scrambles all over it and time to replace

You can just shine a flashlight into the screen and usually you will be able to makeout some images, its helpful to know what you are looking for, but if you see picture, you know its just a backlight. To test the inverter, do a little digging on the part number to find out what its output voltage and polarity is, though they are probably all about the same, and check at the big white 2 wire connector for whatever its supposed to put out.
