Patrick,

To do the water pump, yes the timing belt will have to come off. But the timing belt is a simple job. They can be replaced on the side of the road. Remove fan, remove v-belts, remove timing belt and covers and replace water pump.

If there is a leak at the thermostat, I would suspect the rubber o-ring on the thermostat. You can probably buy just the ring, or they come with new thermostats which are about $10. That is a simple job as just a radiator hose has to come off and then the 'stat block (not sure what its called) is taken off.

Volvo changed very little about the 700/900 series through its life. They made minor updates here and there, but same basic engine/transmission, chassis, etc. Many parts are interchangeable over a wide span of years. Maintenance should be about the same on any of them regardless of year.

8, I know don't know much about the S/V series. I test drove one but it had a loud knock/tick which I assumed was a lifter but I didn't buy it. I don't know much about those engines either.

Thanks for the info, Rainman. I much appreciate the advice from someone such as yourself who's familiar with these vehicles.

I'll report back when all is said and done with this Volvo.
