Are there any events planned for this summer out west for the 30th anniversary for those of us who can't make the official 30th at Indy?
My wife suggested a one time revival of Westfest, but I don't think there is enough interest in a car show. I suggested just giving the Coast Run a 30th theme, but Mary suggested going to a different destination, maybe Solvang because it is popular and is a half way point between the most people in California.
Would anyone be interested in an informal get together?

June 27-30 is the big show back east, so we don't want to do this any where near that on the calendar. Maybe, memorial Day weekend or labor day? Let's talk about good dates for everyone.
If we do Solvang....are we going to get a parking lot to do a show in? Solvang is very touristy and can get quite crowded. I think this is a good half-way point for the Ca guys to meet in though. Secretly, me is thinking you just want to go to Solvang for them special powdered sugar pastry ball thIngies you had at that restaraunt that we went to that sunday morning. Am I correct or what? Kit

I would love to get as much input as possible to help plan this event. If we can get input that there would be enough interested attendees that would actually register to show their car then this might turn out to be a car show. Otherwise I was thinking that it would be kinda like the Coast Run with a wonderful drive, lunch and then a big dinner and raffle in the evening. Other ideas we could consider would be a swap meet to share Fiero items, tech session discussions, or just people choice awards with no judges/trophies.

Maybe someone should talk to the Jet City Guys and see if they want to tie in either the Fiero Fest in Richland Washington or the Arlington Washington Fiero Picnic and do it with a 30th Anniversary theme to it. The Arlington Picnic is not really a big enough event as its only a single day even but the Fiero Fest in Richland is a 3 Day Fiero show, which could easily add a 30th theme to it, get the word out to Pontiac that there will be another show on the West Coast and see if they could kick in for some extra prizes. Maybe you could twist their arm for an extra LS7 as a door prize. I am sure attendance would be up......

For the record, I do NOT want this event to take away from the 30th Anniversary at Indy. If you can go to that show, please go there. If you can't, then I'd like there to be something closer to home for you.

I plan on driving to the 30th from Seattle. If an alternate event is planned, please consider WA, ID, OR peeps too in the location choice
any suggestions? and how many WA OR ID people would come? If only one or two decide to come then moving the event further north if 30 people are coming from LA wouldnt work out as well. Dont get me wrong the closer to SF the more i like it lol.

my only suggestion for moving it further north would be San Fran, Reno, or Tahoe. otherwise there really isnt anything of interest or size to draw people there.

I'm sure they are doing the show in Tri Cities. This event would be for folks in CA, NV and AZ. We hadn't had anyone come down from the Northwest for several years.
I wasn't intending for this to be a car *show*, either, more of an informal get together.

Possible Itinerary for Solvang on Memorial Day Weekend:
Hotel of choice right now is Pea Soup Anderson's in Buellton. Rate is $117.90 for Sat and $107.10 for Sunday. Has out door swimming pool, mini golf and continental breakfast.
Sat May 25, 2013: Possible meet up at local Restaurant (Possible Bit of Denmark in Solvang for great danish food) and then sit by pool in the evening and talk about Fieros.
Sunday May 26, 2013: Drive to Lompoc viewing flower fields. Possible visit Wine tasting rooms in Lompoc. Drive to Santa Barbara. Possible visit Mission Santa Barbara (Street art festival in process), Wine tasting in the Funk Zone or go to the beach. Have Lunch somewhere.
Drive back to Solvang and visit shops downtown. In the Evening have dinner and raffle. Possible dinner at Pea Soup Anderson's Restaurant, all you can eat buffet is about $30.00 per person.
Monday May 27, 2013: Drive in to Solvang for a breakfast of Aebleskivers....yum. Visit shops downtown Solvang and head home from there to your own family BBQs.
So far this is all just ideas and need input to find out if they are good ideas or not. If we change dates rates would be different and the flower fields in Lompoc might not be in bloom. May has very good weather...It starts getting up into the 90's starting around August.

Are there any Drag Racing Tracks around there, Cool Auto Parts / Performance Shops. How bout a Wrecking Yard Hunt as a group. Our Fiero club has done that in the past and its a total Blast, get 20 Fiero guys to go to a wrecking yard together. Hunting bits that can be used to mod Fiero's and or related stuff.
I am not trying to be negative, but I don't know a lot of car guys that like to go and look at the flowers, unless its because we are driving by them at 120mph. Another fun thing to do as a group is a Dyno Day, so people can bench race what their car is going to run, then go and find out exactly what power it makes to the rear wheels.

Those are all good ideas, but I'm not aware of any places like that around Solvang. It is a small town. The nearest big towns are Santa Maria and Santa Barbara. This is meant to be more of a hang out and cruise kinda weekend. Relaxing stuff.

Oops, I just realized you are in Cali, and Solvang is a place in Cali, I thought it was in Washington State. Sorry. I was going to offer to try and help find some places, but I know nothing about Cali aside from the fact that we drove through there really fast. Went from BC Canada down to LA and over to Vegas. Was a great run through the Grape Vine in August.

Pure class, man... thanks!
Good luck with your event... I've wanted to take my Fiero up the PCH or something like Glendora Ridge Road for years. Long drive to get there, though, as you said.

Yup. I drove to the 20th and wheatstock. Those were some LONG days of driving.
Just a thought, but what about some place inland, like Inyo or Kings Canyon? Not that the coast isn't nice, but moving into the mountains might make for some nice scenery and less driving for people in other states. Maybe have a competition for the person who brings the most complete campsite in their Fiero. Just a thought!

LOL, some of our club guys could win that one. We do a club Camping trip each year and packed creatively and a slightly cramped passenger you can put enough gear in a Fiero for 2 people for a 3 day weekend. Creative use of the ledge behind the seats for those folding chairs and a cooler strapped to the top of the decklid and an inflatable queen size air mattress with an easy up Tent, its not too bad. However in later years I added the Trailer Hitch and small 4x6 trailer so we could haul larger items like a full sized BBQ and 2 extra coolers. I've got video doing over 100mph chasing other Fiero's with the Trailer on the back and BBQ strapped down. Totally Awesome Times.

It sounds good to me since we missed the last one down there! I'll just have to play it by ear for awhile since our HET chapter is putting on the Hudson International in San Mateo this year in July, so there is lots for a small number of us to do between now and then!

I would like to see something alittle more north. Solvang is a long drive for me in the Fiero coming from Clearlake. How about Yosemite, Vegas? If there isn't a car show (Boo Hoo), I can drive my other car which is more comfortable for long distance drives.

At car show is highly unlikely. If you want to bring a different car, go for it. More fieros would be nice, but more people would be nicer.
It's a state-owned park and conference center. Not sure how busy/booked it'd be over a three day weekend, but it's really a nice place with onsite conventional/banquet facilities and cool/quaint cabins. It's fairly close to the middle of California. If timing isn't critical, I've had good luck booking it for mid-size groups around Pebble Beach, which is a fun diversion. There are some nice roads in & out, plenty to see & do as well.
Another suggestion might be out in Amador wine country... There are several places that do weddings and have accommodations for wedding parties, surely they could host some Fieros. If it's the right time of year, it can get pretty dead out there, maybe some deals to be had. Plus, there is wine.

This is copy of an email I got from our Reno Fiero club "Fiero Road club of Northern Nevada":
Hi Mary and John I tried to post this on Pennocks but could not, could you please share these comments for me? Thanks Kym
We would love to see another West Fest event, we had a great time in Solvang and I agree it would be a great location for a quiet Fiero get together weekend. We also wouldn't mind seeing it somewhere in between so we could get the NW Fest and West Fest clubs all together for one big event, maybe try again in Shasta? I know the North folks don't want to go too far and the S. Cal folks don't want to go too far, but I think it would be a great turnout if we can find somewhere to meet somewhat in the middle. We like the idea of a Coast run, however there already is one. Myself, I don't mind if there is not a formal car show, I would rather get us all together in one place and enjoy the town together, enjoy some food together, cruise somewhere together, take pictures together and we could see if the hotel would let us hang out in the parking lot and have an informal peoples choice type show give out ribbons and we could make up awards like, dirtiest Fiero, cleanest Fiero, most miileage, most bugs, most modifications, most stereo equipment, etc...., It would be a lot less stressful and less expensive to not have to worry about judging, awards, classes, vote counting and cleaning your car all day instead of just hanging out together with our Fiero's and friends. It seemed the West Fest kept going as long as it did by doing things on a smaller scale and everyone still had a blast. We don't need to make it a big blow out. Just my thoughts, but our club would love to attend and/or help with another West Fest event put on with all the other clubs. Contact me Mary or John if you want to talk more about it.
Kym Robinson, President Fiero Road club of Northern Nevada Fieroroadclub@aol.com
I am all about less stress. Annually in NorCal there is "Fun Ford Sunday." It was previously at the Vallejo Fairgrounds but either last year or the year before they moved it to the Antioch Fairgrounds. It's just a bunch of people with Fords parking on some grass and sharing the day together. I'm sure there is a crapton of organization, but for the attendees it feels pretty mellow. There are show cars and daily drivers and everything in the middle... nothing is too nice (Pantera) and nothing is to crappy (Ford Escort). It's just one day, with people milling about, eating from food trucks, and a raffle or two. IMHO, best type of get together there is - No Pressure. The Antioch Sunday was pretty nice - better than Vallejo, IMHO - lots of cool Sac Delta scenery, neat roads, etc. Don't know if one day would motivate people from a ways off, but perhaps. Show up Friday, stay at a weird hotel, meet up Saturday, stay in another weird hotel, head home Sunday.

I've got the room block on... This event is a go!!!
To get your reservations call:
Pea Soup Anderson's Inn 800- PEA-SOUP (800-732-7687) There is a room block of 25 rooms available. We can increase as needed. The room block ends 30 days before our event. If we don't use all our rooms they will release them and fill them up with other guests. The room block is titled: Fiero Westfest
Our rate is $117.90 for Saturday and $107.10 for Sunday. With taxes/room fees the total for the two days will be $256.01.
Please make your reservations now and let me know so I can get an idea of how much room is needed for dinner and lunches during the event.

I agree with Jared. The best West Fest (since I owned FIero's) was in Monterey.

I'd love to do a show, but please not Memorial day, or Labor day. Those holidays are already too crowded.
Sorry....This is the best weekend for our schedule to plan for time off. We will miss you. If this event works out well we will have to look for another place to do this again.
