That was Awesome... its going to get said eventually, "Though there probobly wasnt much left of the Fiero"... Regardless of that Obvious fact... It was still Awesome...

Great video but I would be willing to bet there are zero actual Fiero parts on that car. Wish my Formula sounded/ran like that. Laguna Seca is one of my all time favorite tracks! Very cool!

I love how the driver goes from racing position to cruising with his left arm on the top of the door frame. There are a couple more videos put up by that user with the camera mounted inside. As for not being a fiero . . . really? Seriously? It looks as if it were an original imsa fiero.
How do you shift like that? You could tell he wasn't using the clutch, which I can do at 3 to 4 grand (used to drive a truck for a bit), but I can't do it in a racing situation at higher RPM where all the torque band is at. Does anyone race and know how to do this properly?

If you look closely he's using the clutch on everything but up shifts, on up shifts he lifts quick partial on the gas to "unload" the transmission-rpm match for next gear, which just pops right in. Odds are that's not a Getrag in that car, or at least not a stock one. You can do it with a Getrag, but it's pretty darn sensitive about rpm match to next gear, and of course if you don't do it right you'll just wear the trans out earlier.

Most likely, That transmission was using Spur Cut Gears, and a special dog tooth design. Basically its a "Dog box" and it is very similar to a motorcycle sequential transmission. There are much fewer and much more space between the dog teeth than in a synchromesh transmission. They shift much harder, but all you need to do to shift into the next gear, is push on the shifter. It will not grind, it will SNAP into the next gear. First to pull it out of the current gear you just let up on the throttle, which unloads the dogteeth.

If I remember right they use custom transmissions with non-syncromesh gears. They usually have to rebuild the transmission every couple races. Someone please chime in if I'm wrong.
EDIT whoops too late listen to those guys^

I looked up a dogbox mod for my T-5 transmission in my Camaro, by the way, and they ran I think roughly $4000-$5000 for the internal parts no case. I may be mistaken, it could have been a modified case with dogbox. the T-5s are prone to "Shaft Spread" which, also sounds like a bad disease.

The transmission that's in that car is a Hewland DGB. That car looks to be a later Huffaker built car for SCCA GT1 or 2. I think due to the center lock wheel hubs that it may have the Spice GT Camel light suspension under it. I helped to hook him up with new quarter panels a few years ago, his name is Terry Mchenry I believe. To upshift a race box like that, yes you just lift off the throttle for a split second(just enough to unload the drivetrain) and go to the next gear as quickly as you can. These dog boxes do not like to be shifted with a slow hand. To downshift, drivers use different methods. Some never use the clutch, but left foot brake and with the right foot, give a little "blip" to speed up the next gear to engage. Others will dip the clutch to get the trans into the next gear. This is the type of transaxle that I have in my IMSA,although mine is based on a Porsche 930 case. The Hewland DGB is very pricey, the last time I checked, a used box was $15k, plus then you need a $1200 clutch and close to a grand for the bellhousing/trans adapter.
