Thanks, but those yards are 5 hours north of here There is a Pick-n-pull in St. Louis (I work in the St. Louis area) and I plan on hitting it next time they have a 50% off sale.

The seller just called me again. The engine will be here either tomorrow or Thursday.
I asked him how many engines he has. His answer, "enough to last a while". He said he had 4 other engines that he shipped in the past week so I would conservatively guess that he has more than 12 left.

I'm going to pick mine up Saturday. I have to measure the Tahoe to see if I can get a 32" x 30" x 32" crate in the back. Do you know the weight?
My long block which came with everything except the AC compressor and alternator, on a spare tire strapped to a pallet weighed 480#.
Just count it as 500#. Check the Tahoe's gross vehicle weight rating (GWVR). Then add your weight, 500# for the engine and anything else that is in the truck together with the vehicle's curb weight and if it is less than the GVWR, you will be OK.

I got some extra parts for the 91-95 motor including upper and lower intake manifold, throttle body on the manifold. And some other parts that might be help out.
PM me with any interest.
Thanks
Ryan

I noticed these motors come with a flywheel, so presumably they are service engines for 5-speed equipped cars. I read somewhere the standard trans engines had higher compression pistons. Can anyone confirm that?

I have heard that the manual engines have a higher compression ratio also. I have a GM booklet on the engine and it does not list a different compression ratio between the manual and automatic. It does state that the automatic has 200 hp vs 210 for the manual.
It lists compression ratio as 9.5:1
I am guessing that the difference in the hp figures is not due to compression, but to chipping.
I'll see if I can scan some of the pages in my book and post them.

I have pistons from a 91 DOHC manual laying around but don't have any auto DOHC pistons to compare them to, anybody have the auto pistons to compare?

And yes, I wish I had bought 2 as well. If I had my truck instead of the Tahoe, I would have bought a second one I will try to get some pics today when I unload it.

Too many other things to do. Decided against pulling another engine to pull the misc parts and bolts needed to re assemble this 97 TDC from a 97 Lumina while collecting for a 3800 build. Accepting reasonable offers

Here are a bunch of random pics. You'll notice it comes with a flywheel, water pump, oil filter, dipstick, intake & exhaust gaskets and even a fresh baggie

So do you think its worth it? Whats the plan with it? You going to drain the oil and check the crank/bearings and the cylinders? How much was shipping, did they drop it off at your house, or did you have it shipped to a business?
Thanks
Rob

It's rusted. It's the ONLY thing I found that concerns me. I might pull it, clean it and replace the seal if the snout looks like that. The rest of the motor is CLEAN.

I picked it up from the seller. This is a BRAND NEW GM replacement engine. It has never been opened until I took the pictures. My plan is to collect the needed parts and swap it into my 86 SE for daily driver duty. I'll crank it over with the starter until I have oil pressure, make sure there is oil up under the cam covers and fire it up.
Is there some sort of break-in procedure for the cams, or do I just run it like a new car?

Wow Dave thanks for the reading material You have covered a couple projects that I was trying figure how to start. +4U
I have a Quad4 that I was going to put in one of my coupe but for the price and the fact that it is a new engine I believe that the Quad will get bumped
What parts do I need to get to make it a complete engine?
What parts do I need to get to make it a complete engine?
Off the top of my head and looking at the pics:
Everything from the sharp end: alt, ac compressor, water pump pulley cover, serpentine tensioner assembly, serp belt.
Top: lower intake manifold, upper intake plenum, throttle body and all the related gubbins on that, fuel rail, injectors, injector harness, fuel pressure regulator, gaskets. Some sort of dummy pulley (like I did) to replace power steering pump pulley.
Blunt(ish end): Starter
Other: Miscellaneous plumbing for cooland/vac lines. I'm guessing there's a crank position senson on the side of the blockj, cannot see from the pics. Need that if not. ECM, Ignition module and coils (same coil as Fiero uses, just three of them). Plug leads. wire, patience! Exhaust manifolds.
You'll also need of course:
Exhaust system (probably have to fab your own, nothing off the shelf likely to fit so need to weld!), O2 sensor, bung to wled into exhaust for O2 sensor. Cat, muffler. engine mount, at least for the sharp end.
