It's time to start making your plans to attend the 14th Annual Run For The Hills. Every year, we try to give you a route with all the excitement you can stand. This year we will be returning to The Dragon and some of the surrounding area roadways.
We will be basing our run from Franklin, NC so we can get to The Dragon much quicker. Hotel planning is still in the works, but we're looking at several locations in downtown Franklin.
We'll keep you updated as new information is available. We will be having our annual raffle, door prizes, and 50/50 raffle. If anyone has any Fiero related items they would like to donate for the raffle, contact Kevin McFall, Georgia Fiero VP at thomasmtoys@yahoo.com or georgiafieroclub@gmail.com Attn: Kevin. Some of the items already on the list are embroidered Fiero jackets and hats and shirts and a set of limited edition RFTH 14 coffee mugs.
Event tshirts will be available and as soon as we get the design finalized, we'll post it here. For the first time, you will be able to pay through the Georgia Fiero PayPal account. There are no entry fees to join us, so come on out and join in the excitement.
Don't have much time do I? I need to get cracking on my pos 87 GT. I want to do this at least once in a Fiero. The CGT and the 599 (wife doesn't know yet) are much too fast for those corners

I will be needing some help to make it. Ben brought the 88 over to fix the stearing collumn and someone had tried to do it before and messed up the pivot pins. so it will take more work and I will need to find another set to install. also when he pulled in the driveway I noticed the rear tire was cumming apart and ready to blowout. their's 300 bucks for tires but I think I will have enough time to get it fixed in time for the main run. but I wanted to go on the scout mission as well I will not make the meeting this mounth but I will make August. keep me posted. D.

July 18 is the scouting and documentation run. I already have the run laid out. I just need to document turns, mileage, gas, food, etc. OH, YEAH, and Restrooms! Once that's done, we need to go back one more time to make a full blown attack to get a time frame to start and finish so we can schedule dinner at the restaurant.

For the scouting run, we will be meeting up at the QT on Mundy Mill Rd, in Oakwood, Ga., exit 16 off I-985 and leaving around 7am on July 18. We should get to Clayton about 8-8:30 and top off at the RaceTrac, then on to Franklin by 9am. This will be a somewhat leisurely drive but you can drive the route as you choose.
Anyone wanting to hook up with us at a different point, just let me know and we'll coordinate it.

Just got the hotel set up. It will be at the Franklin Inn, in downtown Franklin, NC. Rooms are in the $50 area. They are normally $75. All rooms will be on the ground level, and all rooms face the pool. A very large and spacious parking lot. The address is 17 W. Palmer Street, Franklin, NC.
Reservations can be made by calling 1-800-433-5507 or 1-828-524-4431. I would suggest calling their local number. In order to receive the special rates you must tell them you are with The Georgia Fiero Club or Run For The Hills event. I have reserved a block of rooms that will be available at these rates through Saturday, September 12. After that date, the rooms are released and the rates return to standard prices.

Great. I'll be going back, probably on the 15th to do a shake down run. I drove it in the Grand Prix to get accurate mileage and to try to determine time for sightseeing, fuel stops, and such, and hit the restaurant at the right time for lunch. Working the route in 1 direction puts us at lunch at about 10:30 and before driving through The Dragon. The other route puts at lunch around 1, and after going through The Dragon.
Hope a couple of you can come along. We'll discuss it at the meeting Saturday.
Ron, you know it's gonna be a lot of fun. Being a bike rider, I know you're familiar with all the roads on this run. Are you saying you aren't going to be able to make the big event in September?

I just wanted to say have fun but please please be safe. I was at the Dragon last weekend with my Solstice and we lost one member from our group with another critically injured.
Here is the report from killboy.com:
Kinda slow one last week, which made it really nice for those who were here enjoying the ride/drive. Lots of folks smiling and having fun, and we've got a great collection of highlights below as a result, but as is often the case, tragedy can quickly overshadow all the sunshine in the world. Last Saturday night was one of those unfortunate moments. A member from the Sky/Solstice group was giving another member a ride, and lost control on Hwy 28 about 1/8th of a mile from the turn off from 129. The car side-swiped a tree and the passenger was killed instantly. Driver was, and still is in critical but stable condition. He was flown out and friends on the scene said the Graham County EMS team did an amazing job, working very fast to stabilize the injured and get a helicopter on route immediately.
The left turn they wrecked in is a fairly tricky one, in that there is always gravel around the outside of it because there are dumpsters there and people going in and out all the time. Most traffic doesn't stay wide through the turn, so the gravel accumulates. If a person is driving nice line, staying well away from the yellow, they are punished with a loss of traction. We will try to take a broom out there as often as possible and work on keeping it cleaner. (along with the rest of the Gap as always) The dumpsters there were also very prone to attracting wildlife, mostly bears, but I think they have made upgrades to keep the bears out, so I'm not sure if there was an animal involved in the crash or not.
It shouldn't need to be repeated, but let's all please be careful when we have precious lives in our cars or on our bikes. Imagine the sorrow this poor driver is going to face if he survives. Our thoughts are with the families of the Nellie Tubbs and Keith Wolven.
If you haven't ordered your event tshirt, yet, you have just 2 weeks left. There will be no shirts available at the event. You can place your order online on at www.gafiero.org from the link at the top of the home page, or by mail. Mailing information is also on the website.
Hotel information is also on the website. Just less than a month to make your reservations.

what a great day on the dragon! this is going to be a fun run. a true test of the car and driver. the Fiero's were made for roads like this I did not make Ben sick but I did have him on the edge of his seat a few times he said it best, "it is like an all day roller coaster." I look forward to seeing everyone soon. it will be a day you will talk about of at least a year till the next one
my little red 88 did great!

Aside from all that tire smoke, I didn't see any problems with your car. I liked your comment about John showing us his tail lights-and he was in the rear.
It was a good day. I think we set a good pace and it gave me a good idea of what time to plan for after-the-run activities. Thanks all for participating. Now, we just have to get Ben into the drivers seat.

That's OK. Now that he knows the route, we'll let him lead the tourist and sightseer's group.
LOL! if he gets another Fiero before then he just might the 355 has a bad trans we need to change out before he can drive it. also Clayton said if he is in town he will be driving his car.

I went a few years ago and the run (not through the dragon) was ~170 miles of turns twists and cut backs. It looked as though there was lots of beautiful scenery that I could not enjoy as my eyes were on the road for the next twist. I ended up with a bad rear wheel bearing. Other times on the roads in the hills of Georgia, or NC I had the brakes of my automatic Fiero smoking. I have since replaced the brakes and rotors in that Fiero. Definately a road course that needs a manual transmission. I need to change out the clutch master and slave in my manual Fiero, before I do a lot of heavy shifting.
I'm getting to the time of life where I want to enjoy the sights and take time to smell the roses. Reading of the drivers wrecking because the roads is more of a challange that the drivers skills is sort of a turnoff as too many want to overdrive their cars without having the skills needed.
Have fun on the road trip, but be careful.

Old Lar, we'll be breaking up the pack into 3 groups as we did up until the last couple of years. The ones who want to tackle it all out will be leading out first. Then the more sedate group will be next. Last would include the ones who want to fully take in the scenery. If anyone exceeds their or their car's ability, it's because they chose to do so, not because they had to. We have a perfect safety record with no accidents in the previous 13 years.
The recent accident involving the injury and death was with the Peach State Kappa Club which comprises the Solstice and Sky. The driver had already been through the run during the day and negotiated it without problems. The accident was sometime around 10PM, when you just can't pick up the hazards of the roadway.
Hopefully, people don't think this is a competition road race. It's just a gathering of Fieros (and a Lotus or 'Vette or Ferrari or two) that gives a route that they can enjoy as they choose. Hope you will decide to join us.
At one time, the run had no particular weekend. Because some people expressed a need to schedule their vacation well in advance in order to attend the RFTH, the members voted to make it the 3rd Saturday of September. That's how it got that way. I'll present it to the board and see what we can do. Keeping the same traditon, next year it'll be on the 18th.
