I think my Fiero was 'Given' to the dealership as a demo car. I know Chrysler does the same thing. When the PT Cruiser came out, the local Dodge dealership got delivered a base model PT Cruiser with basically just an auto. Everybody test drove that car, then ordered one. Same thing when the Charger came out, then they sell the car when production catches up or at the end of the model year.
I got a Pontiac Historic thing done to my Fiero, which tells me where the car was originally sold to and stuff like that. It also has the build date, which according to the paper was Spetember 20, 1983. But I have found build sheets stuck to the dash and door panels and other areas, that have the date of August 16, 1983, and also, the door sticker says build 08-83. I think the date on that Pontiac Historic thing was the date the VIN number was cleared to leave the factory, and September 20 was 1 day before they went on sale to the public. Since my Fiero had to go to BC, it would take at least a day by rail to get there. With all the hype for the Fiero in 1983, I dont think GM would have released any to the dealers early so they dont sell them before the release date. When my Fiero was finally sold, I think the buyer wanted a casette player, because my Fiero had a non stock casette player, it was a GM one but not a Fiero one since it had an analogue tuner, and chrome knobs. When I took it out, it had a GM price tag on it for over $300.00, so I think that was a dealer installed option for the customer when new. Maybe even the aftermarket sunroof, but I doubt that.
Hey, I wonder if my Fiero is one of the ones in the pic above? Also, my 84 has had all recalls done to it, including a replaced engine, the block has a date code of 1988, and had the 88 crank with the counterbalancer gear on it, but no counterbalancers, or DIS. Maybe the parking brake thing was changed too? I have most of the recalled engine parts though, like the exhaust manifold, and dipstick, and decklid weather stripping, and that center vent deflector thing

I have seen many of those, there are a few under the dash, the tell the builder which car they go on, and what optins to stick on that part. The doors also have a larger version of the same thing, they tell the builder what locks, windows and glass to put in the door, and which car is goes on. MY 86 has them too.

I think the Fed. emission test part is just one that was randomly pulled off the line and dyno tested,etc..I used to see this on Jeep/Dodges whaen I worked at the dealership. Kinda cool tho,not too many were done I am sure. The pic that whereatt posted,is the pic I was talking about. befarrer, your car could very well be in that pic!,as well as any of us with early cars.I wish there was a date on that photo.Somewhere between May and October of '83 I'd guess...Can you belive that was allmost 25 years ago....? Damn
My Aunt Pat (retired from GM) had the first Fiero imported to Canada. It was a white 84 she drove as a company car in Oshawa 1983. I'll see if I can find the VIN#
