Aside from GM still having #1, mine is the earliest I can recall right now, # 24,421 built December 8th 1983, making it just more than 6 months older than I am. I'm sure there are a few older ones on here, though.
how would you tell? I have an 84 that appears to have been delivered in fall of 03 to the first purchaser. (according to car fax) would decoding the vin tell me more?

GM has the oldest and the second oldest I am aware of is owned by the Crawford Museum in Cleveland.
It was one of the first non pilot cars built and retained by GM to test rear swaybars. The car still sits with the test bars om the trunk. Fred may recall the production number on it. I think it was something like 125th one built.

The last 6 digits of the VIN tell you what number it was for that model year. The first VIN for a 1984 Fiero is 200001. So RWDPLZ last 6 digits should be 224421 meaning it was the 24,421 st 1984 Fiero built. They built 136,840 Fiero's in 1984 so the last 1984 Fiero should be 336840. (Based on recorded production numbers)
Totals would be: Highest VIN numbers (based on Fiero production figures): 1984 - 336840 1985 - 276371 1986 - 283974 1987 - 246581 1988 - 226401

Mine was the 7007 one built in Sept 1983. Click link below for one of the testings sheets.
By the way the first 2 means something else not a number for the produciton. If I remember correctly now it is a designated number after another cars production which started with 1. You only count the the digits after the 2 and as Orief said the 3 also as the last 36,000 were designated 3 for 100,000 apparently. But being that you are looking for the earliest the ones that high do not count. Rick

That car is number 184 as seen in the photo below. Rick

No, that is incorrect. The 3rd position digit in the VIN is the "Make". The "2" you mention (in the 12th position) rolls to a "3" when they make over 100,000 cars.
1 - Nation of origin 1=U.S. 2 - Manufacturer G=General Motors 3 - Make 2=Pontiac 4 -1984 Restraints 4- 1985 Carline P=Fiero (P-body car) 5 - Carline series (Coupe, SE, GT, etc) 6-7 -1986 Body type 6 1987- Body style 7 1987 -Restraints 8 - Engine code 9 - Check digit 0-9 or X 10 - Model year 11 - Manufacturing plant P. 12-17 - Plant production sequence number Starts at 200001

Just to clear this up for me I have a few questions. The last six digits tell which number it was out of the TOTAL production of that years output regardless of model? For instance my 88Gt is 209308 which would make it the 9308th 88 model, is this correct? Is there a way to tell which production number it was out of all 88Gts? Thanks

I have a 1984 Fiero Sport 2M4, it was built August 16, 1983. Production number is 1192. Also, something neat, this is an original Canadian Fiero, originally purchased in White Rock, BC. It is a very low optioned (auto and rear defrost only) Sport Coupe, I have owned it since 2002.
Pics:
I want to restore the car to its originality. All of what I have done is bolt on. The only thing I need to change is the roof, it was originally a non sunroof Fiero, but has had an aftermarket one installed.
(I have the original, untouched hood on the car now, the one in the pic was a junkyard one), also, those are not the original wheels, it originally had 13" steel wheels without trim rings, which I have. (original L4 exhaust is also at home) (I also have the stock 4 spoke vinyl steering wheel, but I need a factory AM/FM with no casette radio for the interior)
My dad also has an 84 Fiero, its production number is 75000 exactly. By comparing my 84 to his and all other 84,s I have seen, mine has some slight differences. Like my 84 has metal window cranker handles, where every other Fiero I have seen has plastic. I also have an american fuel gauge and odometers which read in MPH, while the speedo reads in KM/h. Also, the seat belt latch release buttons say 'PRESS' on them, where every other Fiero I have seen are just red. And also, the exhaust has some different hangers, which I noticed when putting the V6 exhaust on, all of the spring hangers are welded to the cradle instead of bolted on, there is no holes for the bolt on hangers, and a few other things I am probably missing.

The first several thousand fieros did not have sunroofs either. There was a hold up in the production of the glass, and the cars took off without them.
They were also only white and red for the first runs too. Look in your Witzenburg book,on page 51. There is about 700 fieros in the shot, not a one with a sunroof, all red and white.
Cool.

There was also a LONG wait to get one of the first Fieros. My mother ordered hers on September 26, 1983 (my 9th birthday). At that time, nobody knew what a black one looked like yet, but it was available to be ordered (she chose red). It arrived at the dealership on March 30, 1984 (her 30th birthday...the birthdays are why I remember the dates).
