I have been told that the rear hood springs are the same for all years only the tension is different and is arived at by the positioning of the rods in the mounting holes.????

Rear decklid springs are different. Different tension springs have a different color dab of paint on them. You can adjust tension a bit using the pins, but it is marginal. A decklid with spoiler would requie read decklid springs that were made and tensioned for the spoiler weight.

NIFE has a great segment on this on their website.

The firebird/camaro mirrors are not an exact replacement. They will sit at a different angle than stock. Not close enough to original for my taste.

I think Scion TC rims fit the Fiero too.

Fie RO had a thread where he listed possible stock rims that would fit a fiero. We should probably include that list here too and update the first post.

I really like the idea of having all junkyard upgrades in one thread. Makes it easier to find stuff.

Hi fellow Fiero Fanatics,

While my factory 86GT seats are out for Mr. Mikes leather, I did a little junk yarding and found a set of Cavalier buckets. They bolt right in and fit pretty well. They sit about a half an inch taller but otherwise look sharp.. They really "updated" the look of the interior to my surprise... Dark Charcoal color matches my gray interior fairly well.

They came out of a late model Cavalier with only nine miles on it... Probably a good story there I suppose... "totalled on the test drive" or something like that.. A really cool thing is that they were only $36 a pair and took less than an hour to clean off and install using the factory tracks... a lot cheaper and better looking than some of the seat covers I have tried....

I am sure this has been done before but if anyone wants pics of how they look and fit I can post some.. Also, I am a new member and I saw this as a good way to "break the ice" into the forum.

Best Regards, Jeff

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!

Great intro. Why yes we all want pictures, what are you nuts? We live off of pictures here

We want pictures of the seats, the car, as well as anything you may feel is relevant

You do know that once you join the Fiero Forum you have to start buying Fieros like they are going out of style (like that would ever happen).

Brad

yes i plan to put it in to the post and actually start a list on the first post so everyones posts are the first thing you see. just what part will fit not the entire description. people can look through the rest of the thread to see what the person had to say about the upgraded junk yard part,.

Ok Team,

Here are some pics of the junkyard interior build.....

2005 Cavalier Seats = $36

http://img.villagephotos.co...-5/176788/view_1.JPG

Gap with seats back most of the way - tilted back two clicks - comfortable

http://img.villagephotos.co...-5/176788/View_2.JPG

Grant wheel, 1998 F-Bird = $10, Monsoon CD player $50

http://img.villagephotos.co...-5/176788/View_3.JPG

Mediocre carpet, original equipment LOL

http://img.villagephotos.co...-5/176788/View_4.JPG

"Porvett" plate, owned since 1986, wife won't let me buy a real one so the Fiero is a great substitute..in fact, I prefer it over a real Vette (sorry Vette owners...me and my wierd little car are going places!!)

http://img.villagephotos.co...-5/176788/View_5.JPG

Hope the pictures worked.... Jeff

I love those seats. Mine are out of a sunfire, i don't have the fancy different headrest for mine "its all the same greyish fabric" but they are so comfy! im really tall, i found If you put a few washers under the front two mounts you will sit much better.

I like the fog light switches out of Bonneville's. I have a few of those for various exterior lights. Gives the interior a more updated stockish look.

I added an auto-dimming compass mirror from an early-90s Cadillac. The auto-dimming works, but is not really noticeable since my rear window is tinted. The compass works perfectly and is pretty cool. Easy to hook up too.

When it comes to cars, anything will fit just about anything. Think about it, we all have seen the Toronado drivetrain in a Fiero, for an example. But, about the wheels. We all know a wheel with a 5x100 pattern will bolt up, but where do they sit in the body? I've seen some FWD wheels on a few Fieros on the street that sat way too far in for my tastes. I like the look of those PT wheels, but how far in do they sit, if at all. We all have our own tastes with styles, mine is that the wheels/tires must be a close to flush with the body as possible.

Do you have more details and how you got everything to work on the mirror?

The Power window switches are not the exact same for firebird and camero as fiero. I don't know about the older ones, but I have an 89 and I pulled them last nite and they clip into the holes, where the fiero's bolts in. I think the factory harness will plug in a work, I'll edit tonight and let everyone know, but the holes the factory once go in will have the be opend up about 1/8" on all 4 edges for the firebirds to fit in. Also the fiero's bolts in from the bottom and the firebird's clips in from the top. BTW, This is an 86 fiero, I have no idea if 88 is the same.

Can anyone confurm if the firebird's headlight module will work (if I get an 87-88 harness that is or make my own)?

Yes the Firebird module will work. That is what I am currently using. Grabbed 3 from the junkyard for $5 and got 2 good ones that way. Not sure if the Sunbird module will work also.

Its quite easy....

The version I used had a 7-pin harness connector on the back of the mirror, and with a little research I found the following:

GM / wire harness color / function
PIN 1 / PINK / POWER +12 volts
PIN 2 / BK / CHASSIS, GND
PIN 3 / LT GRN / BACKUP LIGHTS
PIN 4 /GY / TO AUTO DIM OUTSIDE MIRROR
PIN 5 / PINK / TO AUTO DIM OUTSIDE MIRROR
PIN 6 / DR GRN/WT / TEMP PROBE
PIN 7 / BK/WT / TEMP PROBE

So for auto-dimming and compass ONLY, all you really need is Pins 1 and 2. Hooking Pin 3 up to the backup light circuit will cancel the auto-dimming when you put the car in reverse (I wasn't sure how to do this so I skipped it). It works perfectly even if you don't do this.

Pins 4 and 5 are the auto-dimming signals to the SIDE mirrors, which we don't have to worry about.

Pins 6 and 7 are for the temp sensor. My mirror doesn't have the temp feature; however the car I took it from had the temp readout in the overhead console and consequently had those two wires bundled together with the others in the harness (just not going into the mirror however). If you get a mirror with the temp feature, you'll have to get the temp probe also and run wires from it up to the mirror.

I wired my "hot" wire into the dome light console, so since it is hot all the time I have to remember to turn off the mirror when I turn the car off or it will eventually drain the battery. The better was to do this of course is to run a wire down through the A pillar into a switched circuit somewhere; I did it the lazy way however and just used the dome light.

There may be other variations of this mirror, but I found the above schematic online and it matched mine perfectly.

Oh, one more thing. The compass won't work right until it is calibrated, and this is done by pushing the little button on the bottom while slowly driving in a circle in the parking lot. You have to hold the button in while doing this. A "C" will be displayed when its calibrating.

There are also a bunch of magnetic "ranges" that can be set; the default range is 8 which is good for Chicago, etc, but if you're on the east or west coast it will be different. I'll try and find the range map and post it.

One thing is a bump

Secound, I just tried the switches, the fiero harness will not plug into the switches, the right side will work but not the left. The bump on one of the connectors does not match the one for the fiero. I'm shure if you pulled the connector from the firebird as well that you could get it to work, but then you are investing in a good bit more time for something that does'nt realy look or perform any diffrent that stock and you can still get our switches...

I like the look of those PT wheels, but how far in do they sit, if at all. We all have our own tastes with styles, mine is that the wheels/tires must be a close to flush with the body as possible.

oh well hell than i guess you can be the first one to put a set of t-tops in your fiero from a camaro (since the seals are more available). there are many items that wont fit , and many that most dont even think about. thats the point of the topic . and not everyone knows all the cars that came with a 5x100 bolt pattern

All I was saying is that you can do whatever you want with your car if you have the skill, money, and time to do it. I'm sure someone in the future will use F-Body T-Tops for their Fiero. That's the whole point of fixing up your car for some. To stand out and do something different.
You listed direct bolt ons. But, there has been a few who have put T/A seats in their Fieros, not to mention the dash swaps. Plus those couple putting DSM eng/trans in too. So, I'm just going to guess now this topic is more of a direct replacement thread. Not really getting too crazy with mods.

Well, uh, yeah. Good, easy wintertime mods; at least that's how I interpreted the topic. Nothing wrong with those.

The DSM swap is probably better left for its own thread.

the purpose is to let people know what they can use to do cheap upgrades from other cars that they wouldnt normally think of. i little moding is ok and normal. there are cars my local yards that others dont ever see and vise versa. so i would have never had a chance to measure a f-body dash to find out it sould fit without others trying it and telling everyone. so i wouldnt have just ordered one and hoping it would fit. get what im saying?

Yeah, after your last post, that was the idea I was getting. I've been wanting to get to a part yard to find anything that could be a potential bolt in after seeing this to add to this list. I've found it enlightening as to what I can get. Like, the slave for the clutch "looks the same" between the S10s, F-Bodies, and Fieros.

well there you go , thats the point of the topic. even though ive done everything on my car as many others have before me, many on this forum arent people that can or like to wrench on a car. so they will have no idea what to look for . and there are many things that most dont even notice. so it is great idealy for everyone. ive learned alot from the previous post and thats why i dont want the topic to be lost . there is too much great info on these types of topics.

click on the bar on the left edge of screen, then put this in as " favorites ' and it stays there until you remove it. You have to get there from the ' topic ' page (tech, general or OT)
