I will be doing a conversion in the next couple of months on an 87 Fiero GT. The IMSA Widebody is from Doug at the Fiero Warehouse and is being crated as I type this post. I need to know if : 1....You guys and gals are interested in me posting the complete install from start to finish 2....You want me to post all the pics as I go along with a detailed description of the install
I planned to post this like Russ when he did his Notchback conversion but wanted your input on this topic.
Please let me know...........Thanx

2. Deff choice 2. I like details of what was done. I know it takes forever to write it all up, but for us that like to know every step and what was done, it'll be a great read.
Naturally I have a interest hehehehe so yes please I would enjoy it as parts may be molded from the exact mold that did my car,,,the first Stage 2 built. SC

To give you a little teaser, I am using what was considered the "Stock" tires at the time. I am using 345/35/15 in the rear which are a little over 14 inches wide ( at the tire ). I have 2 companies interested in making rims for this car, both are willing to make up to a 12" wide by 7" offset wheel...or anything in between. Once the body is installed, I can make accurate measurements for the rims. I will definately post all of the pics and details once the body arrives at my house.

You have to be carefull as you are going to wide for the struts. Pick up the 1983-84 Car craft series on the Wide body they built as it states this and thsoe 12"s were not the standar of the time. They were for the race cars only. Some dabbled in the large but few for street. Car craft stopped or should I say Diversified Glass stopped at P225/VR50- 16 as the larger would hit the spring and strut. It was fixable but needed to be done for the 345's series. Hope this helps. The 1984 Car Craft car was in four parts starting in 1983 December ,,1984 February, April and October. My car was there first street car built and was in the shop while they built the Car Craft car. DGP kept my car there until 1988 in a corner when not being driven and only put 8,000 miles on it. Hope this helps. SC
I appreciate the advice but.....as the newbie here, I may surprise a few Vets on this forum. I have a few tricks up my sleeve for those extra wide tires. Stay tuned !!!!

Yes I love to see the wide bodies with largte shoes. Just be nice with the engine as torque may bend those way way out tires also. There is a calculation us Veterans watchout for so we dont loose allot of money. Especially if you have the 3 peice Centerlines like mine as there not good under stress and were known to leak with the bigger tires at race tracks. Seal wasnt good on al those curves. SC

Well Hell...I'm honored being viewed by Russ himself !! The body should be here in a couple of weeks. I'll keep the forum posted.
OK... you're easily impressed so what car is this going on? is it currently a stock Fiero? or is it/are you planning an engine swap, trick suspension, etc? keeping an as delivered body kit or modified it?
Doug left everything standard with the wheel wells. Since I am using 15" wheels, I am going out rather than up with the size.
That may not be as simple as it sounds. you see.... for some strange reason the street IMSA bodywork has smaller wheel openings that even the stock Fiero. I'll dig up a photo to attach to this in a minute, but when I did mine I actually used a stock Fiero to make a template for when I "opened up" my wheelwells. I've never seen one of these that looked right with the stock street IMSA wheelwell openings yet, but perhaps you have an idea that hasn't been tried yet.
ok this is the stock street IMSA opening with it marked out where I was about to cut to enlarge them to stock Fiero size. the front is very similar. If you look at the race IMSA bodys, even they seem to be the same size as the factory stock Fiero also. enlarging them is really pretty easy if you do decide to do that, so I wouldn't let that deter you in any way.

I'll have to see when the body arrives. Hopefully, I won't have to cut up too much of the body but if I do, I have a football field of fiberglass cloth ready to go!!

Yes,yes....15" rims on a widebody. 15 by 12 with Pirelli 345/35/15 which are 14" wide...for the rear of course. For the front...15" by whatever looks best. I am using the older Countach series tires for the rear.

In that I'm not a real fan of Big Wheels, I like the path you're taking. IMHO, the wheels should be large enough to accomodate brake rotors and calipers but not excessive. I like your approach.

Thank you.....For me, having a wider tire rather than tall leaves more options for the suspension later on. The way I look at it, the bigger the rim, the less options you have. Besides, I believe the Countach Pirellis are discontinued. If you can get them, I have seen them for upwards of $800.00 each .....I paid $130.00 a piece for these from a gentleman in Georgia who never used them and they still have the factory decals covering the tread. That is the other reason I am sticking to a 15" rim.
