Hey everyone,

this post is for my girlfriend, her passenger door won't open. It seems as if the lock might be stuck? Tried the key and unlocking from the inside but it still won't budge. There are no power locks.

Anybody have any ideas? We don't want to rip an outer door skin off. Can the inner door skin be removed from the inside with the door shut?

I remember there being a thread about how to break into a fiero? Somebody pm me some info about that? I'm thinking maybe the same way you'd break in when you lock your keys in the car?

My pass. door don't open either. But mine has a plastic piece that is missing, so it dosn't grap right. The plastic piece could have worn out or broke off.
Not sure since it dosn't open from the inside. Somthing's gotta be stuck or broke.

You should be able to reach the lock and latch mechanism with the inner door panel removed.
This shows the mechanism with the outer door panel removed. You'll be able to easily see the rod that connects to the inner lock lever and you should be able to see the shorter rod that connects to the outer lock cylinder assembly.

Here's a little more explanation.
The rod marked in green goes to the inside lock lever
The rod marked in red goes to the outside door lock
The rod marked in yellow goes to the inside door handle

The black arrow is pointing to the door latch release lever. The outside door handle lever rod connects to this and has a small spring on it.
You should be able to unlatch the door by pushing down on this lever. Be careful not to disengage the outer door handle rod and spring though.

Thanks for the info so far...

My dad and i went into the barn and took apart another door. we know how it works and we have a new idea as how to fix it, we're just going to have to wait for daylight.

But heres the problem...

we need to get the interior door skin off, with the door shut--and try not to skratch my interior paint.

On my car, the passenger side door does not lock or unlock completely. Can I remove the door cover and lubricate the locking mechanism in some way?
Thanks!

I find most times it is the lock clip on the lock rod has become brittle and broke off. The rod comes out and the door is in eternal lock.

One of my previous Fieros had the passenger side door that did not open. It turned out to be a very unusual problem. The metal bar that goes from the inside of the door handle and connects vertically to the latch was bent. This made the overall lenght of the bar shoter, disenableing it from fully opening the latch. Therefore the door did not open. Simple fix, I just bent it straight, and everything worked fine. Only way I can figure it got bent was from something frozen. Just a hunch. I hope you can fix your problem as easy..

Might be more work than you really want to do, but you're going to need room to pull the inner door panel away from the door structure and get it out from between the dash corner. The passenger seat is definately in your way. In order to make enough room you may want to remove the passenger side seat and carefully take it out of the car thru the drivers side. I think you can reach the rear 13mm nuts on the seat tracks with the seat all the way forward and the seat back tilted forward. Once the seat is out you should be able to at least release the inner door panel and flex the rear edge of the door panel inward enough to reach inside and try to move the lock rod bellcrank mechanism. You'll have to do this by feel, but the bellcrank only has 2 positions, (locked and unlocked).

The blue colored lever in the photo is the lock bellcrank. It simply pivots forward and aft to lock or unlock the latch mechanism. That's the item you want to try to reach by feel and move to the unlocked position. Best bet is to try moving the inner lock rod first becuase its easier to see and reach.
Hope all this make some sense and maybe helps. Good Luck.

Randy

Here are detailed descriptions of how the latch and lock mechanism works, from this you should be able to determine what you need to do to get it open, hopefully without much if any damage.

I'm going to defer to jazzman on this. I feel pretty competent on the door latch and lock mechanisms since I just put new outside door locks, outer door handles and power lock solenoids on my 87 GT and completely serviced the latch mechanisms, but as far as I'm concerned, jazzman is *the* guru on steering columns and there's a lot of similarity with the rods, levers and "fiddly bits" in the door latch mechanicals.

Me: I just sat and stared at the things for a couple of hours and pulled on the levers and rods until I figured out basically how the whole mess worked

Ive sometimes ran into doors that were damaged enough the rods wouldnt work because they were bent too much or torn off. If you can roll the window down, you may be able to get something down inside to the latch itself and pop it open. Some cars you can get the inside panel off with door closed, but dont think its possible without damage on a Fiero. The door panel goes underneath the dash ends if I remember right when its closed. If you have one opened, you can look to see what kind of wire or prybar you need to reach the latch from the window slot.
