Hmmmmm, on a serious note,

side pipes + exhaust heat + plastic rocker panel = another burning Fiero

Where will the road take you today?

Some helpful links I've done

Is the plastic body of the rear bumpers made out of a different material than the side rockers?
I have seen exhaust tips touching the rear bumper before and the plastic never looked like it was in danger of catching on fire.
The rear bumpers originally had a metal plate that would protect the plastic from the exhaust tips, but many bumpers are now missing the metal plates and the bumpers still seem to be fine. I guess you could always make a custom metal protective plate to be mounted between the pipes and the rockers.

Exaust tips tend to not get very hot... well compared to a cat or the rest of the exaust system anyways...

The link in the 5th post is a picture of my GT. I put a 3.4 DOHC in it and ran the pipes forward and out in front of the rear tires. I plan to redo the rockers so it looks better. The rockers don't show any signs of getting to hot. With the dual in-dual out spintech muffler located where the original muffler was and resonators where the cat used to be it doesn't sound ricey either. I need to do a little rerouting to bring one of the pipes up a little more. It took quite a bit of creative piping to get it to sound right and fit in the limited space we have in the engine area. I say try the side pipes. It's your car and if you like it that's all that really matters.

Can we at least admit that if you saw a Civic or something doing some mod of equal, err, 'sillyiness', you'd be all over them?

Don't forget the little dingle-balls that around the headliner, chrome chain steering wheel, and a little plastic bobble head chihuahua in the back window!

F-I-E-R-O, that looks sweet! Like Archie was saying, with that much pipe, the potential for some serious sounding Fiero fury would be awesome. I don't understand what these people are saying about rice; like you said, you're not looking to bolt on a couple of steel tubes for looks. If you can run pipe from the exhaust manifold up to just behind the front wheels, and then run a T pipe that runs out to each side, I don't see why this couldn't work and be functional - but I don't really know that they would be very functional as a means of cooling the radiator. Anyway, the only issue would be finding good nip and tuck areas to route the piping under the car, because I wouldn't want to have that protruding down any more than any of the rest of the bottom of the car.

I put the Borla 2" stainless exhaust on my '86 four-banger, which does not have those heat shields. I did not get the tips even at first and the driver's side exhaust tip was allowing exhaust to exit before the tip got it away from the car (the tip was positioned too far forward). The hot exhaust exiting the pipes did melt the bottom of the bumper pretty quickly. My tips also do touch the bumper, but the tips don't melt it as they have a pipe within a pipe, so that the outer pipe does not get very hot.

Anyway, if you can route the pipes, and somehow integrate them into the ground effects (an important part of making this work, IMO) rather than simply letting it rest below them, I think it would be a hell of a cool result! Good luck.
