Hoist: thanx to Laverne for lending this out

Test fit without altenator

With altenator, needs some trimming

tight fit, needs more trimming

A perfect fit

Now it's down to the fun part Have to make a couple of support bracket (dog bone & lower shock) plumbing, and wiring. Still up in the air about the exhuast and would like to somehow use the Linear EGR Valve. Using a 3.1 ECM and to use the digital EGR means making an adapter bracket.

For the oil pan to fit on the stock front mount we had to trim a section off. It's an open cavity on the bottom corner so we cut of the section on an angle plus had to trim some on the mount itself. Sorry no after pics yet.

Almost new Eibachs for the fiero $200 cdn

A moment to relax in my new recliner after working on the car

Anyone else doing a 3400 or 3100 swap?

I went and bought all new stock fiero motor mounts and poly cradle bushings. Only mounts we have to make are dog bone and the lower stock underneath the A/C For the Power steering pump, GM sell a pully to go in it's place. It's on all the new 2004/2005 3500 Malibus which don't have the steering pump anymore

Cool! A not so common swap being performed in a not so common workspace. Good luck on the rest of the swap and I hope it works out as you expect it.

Impressive swap thus far. Something tells me that these engines will become more popular engine swap candidates in time as people realize their potential. 185hp / 210tq stock in a VAN, imagine what it could do with just free flowing exhaust and induction...

Some more progress pics. Engine is back out and harness is being rewired.

This is what we cut off the oil pan (red line) blue line is where it used to be.

Looks closer then it is.

I should have cut a bit more off here, to get the nut on the engine needs a litle lift, Red line is where I had to grind the hump flat in the front mounting bracket

Macro mode doesn't use flash

I did a 95 3100SFI a couple of years ago if I can be of any help feel free to ask. I still have my notes if you want a copy. Reccomend using a rear overflow bleeding back into main rad hose or heater hose to connect that vent line off top of thermostat housing to prevent air locks in cooling system. Problem is the water pump is too high up on the block so air builds up and it can't pump air. Dan

FIEROFLYER: any notes you have to help out would be much appreciated. There are a few wiring issues to get by, 3400 only has 1 temp sensor, Has linear EGR valve, altenator has 3rd wire, ECM from 3.1 also needs the VSS HI/LO inputs and fiero A/C has the controls(sensors) on the compressor while the 3400 are in the actual lines (???Hmmm???) did your 3100 use a digital EGR or Linear? There are a couple more things but we have an idea what to do.

Tabs: I can't wait to see it on the road too, miss driving it in this nice weather we're having right now.

Have some pics
I spent the day at the storage unit and have 95% of the harness complete. All I have to do is add 5 extra lines for different sensors the 3.1 ECM requires.

Work station

Don't you just hate having extra parts left over

Progress YES!!!!

this is the low oil sensor. Since the new coolant sensor only has 3 lines (2 for ECM, 1 guage) I'm using the wire for the temp idiot light for the low oil. Just have to remember that if i ever sell the car to tell the new owner if the light comes on, you have low oil and not over heating. YET

Gas lines are on the wrong side DOH! need 4 cylinder gas lines for the swap.

Hmmm don't think Standard Auto Wreckers Likes Fiero's we actually have the same signs at my work (building the new Mega Mall by Canada's Wonderland) Gonna try to snatch one when I get a chance.

daily supplements to keep you going while working on a fiero

I should have the harness completed tomorrow. Just have to do the gas lines then put the engine back in.

Joe Torma: Don't know how many times i looked at your engine swap and I never noticed a difference in engine till today What year and model did your 3400 come out of? I'm using a 2001 Grand Am, and the upper plenium is different and at altenator & braket is. What EGR valve are you using with the plenium?

I got the harness finished, engine is back in the car and we got it to turn over friday night. What a sweet sound hearing it run for the first time in 3 months since I started this. There is no exhaust system on the car right now so it was LOUD! and scared the sg!t out of the couple loading their U-Haul in front of my storage unit. The EGR vavle isn't hooked up yet also the A/C. Need to do a couple of things for them.

like the temp gas lines for testing

Few little things that had to be down for the swap:

1. No P/S so I used the Idler pulley(grooved) from the 3400's belt tensioner, had a spacer made to mount it too the top mount for the old P/S pump.
2. The other 2 idler pulley's (smooth) were removed also and 1 put on the belt tensioner.
3. Belt tesioner relocated to spot over the crank pulley where it normally sits on all 2.8/3.1 with serpentine belts
4. Belt was used from a 1987 pontiac 6000. The belt is a little tighter then I would like but it will stretch a bit when I start driving the car. We also tried one from a 93 Cavalier (3.1) but it wasn't tight enough, so maybe when I get a chance, I'll go to a auto store and take my time and check out the lengths on a variety of different belts to find a better length.
5. Injectors for 3400 use 1 feed source at 15 amps. Injector line 1 was used for this.
6. Injector line 2 was used to power the additional line needed for the altenator (25 amp) and will be used for the EGR when we get that sorted out.
7. Five extra lines were brought from the ECM to the engine bay. 3 for EGR (1 for each solenoid) and 2 lines for the A/C pressure sensor which runs off the ECM instead of the compressor.
8. ECM needs a direct signal from the VSS so I piggybacked the signal at a point inside the car at the connecter under the ECM (clear).
9. ECM also needs a signal that the fuel pump is running and it's connected at the same location as VSS
10. Coolant fan swithes have been rerouted to ECM for on/off control by 1 line now.
11. Coolant temp sensor from a 2.2L cavalier was used. Has three lines, two for ECM (CTS) and 1 for the gauge
12. The temp idiot light has now been hooked up to the Low Oil sensor. (just have to remember it )
13. Reversed the idot light and temp lines on the back of the instrument cluster and on the engine (no more temp gauge pegging upon start up)
14. Most of orginal dogbone support removed to fit altenator.
15. Oil pressure sensor was used from orginal 2.8 motor
16. extra coolant line on top of thermostate remove and bleeder installed
17. Alot of harness rewiring & relocation
18. alot of root beer, & pizza & patience

more to come as we continue our journey

Steve, still need the flange that connects to the exhaust manifold.

Yeah Pete, was a big relief when she stared up. Looks like a did a good job on the harness so far I plan on putting the rest of the suspension back on the rear and bring the car home to finish.

Just a quick question for anyone... I know I'm missing something here. I've been reading Fastback 86's thread about his 3.4 install, and he swapped out the Fiero top end. Just wondering why you don't have to do that Adam, is it the difference between the engines that you can use the 3400's top end?

Oh, and can't wait to see it on the road

simplest way I can put this is the two engine blocks (3.4 & 3400) have the same displacement which everyone picks up on immediatley but everything else is completely different. 3.4 has cast heads instead of aluminum and different intake system, even the front timing cover is completey different and the 3.4 sticks out more. My water pump sits slitely to the rear of the engine whle the 2.8 & 3.4 is in the center. Oil pan is cast on the 3400 and also bolts to the block from the sides as well from the bottom. There are internal differences to, For example: you can buy aftermarket cams for the 3.4 but don't try installing it in a 3400, won't work.

3.4 F-body cars Intake (firebird/camaro)

3400 GM FWD cars (Grand Am/Alero/ GM mini-vans)

Timing cover & water pump location for 3.4

3400, not the pump location

Oil pan for 3.4

3400

prestine 3400

3400 uses a single belt while I believe the 3.4 still uses multiple belts if you have A/C
there's a quick rundown on the differences between the 3400 and the 3.4

Cool, I figured there was two different engines here. So I guess you won't have any of those problems others have with the poor flowing Fiero intake on the 3.4. Well, thats good. Anyways, you should be done about now, right? Right? haha

Nope took a break from the car this weekend. Worked yesterday for most of the day, went home with a migrane attack. Tanya & her mother had to come and pick me up, so she could drive the truck home. Today we went out running around, picked up a new bike rack for the trailer hitch, went to test fit it and noticed someone cut the head off my trailer hitch wire! What a p!ss-ofv. Gotta go buy a new one now since I got 2 vehicle that have to be towed. Rest of the day wil be up visiting relatives in brampton.

For my EGR I used the existing linear EGR and used the 89 Beretta ECM. This ECM used a linear EGR, then in later models they used the Digital EGR.
