Having no success tightening the alternator belt enough to make it stop squealing. Someone once posted that they got something from Harbor Freight, but I didn't see any such thing on their site. Please don't make me shop at JC Whitney, but I will if I have to.

Get new pulleys, and use a long, black crowbar, wedge it in between the engine, and alternator, be careful of the bracket, cause if enough force is used, it'll bend. Push forward on the crowbar, pushing out the alternator, and get it extremely tight. Voila, works everytime. Also don't use the good year gator rib belts, they're junk.

Chuck, I use a set of large channel-locks. Open the jaws, grab the end of the adjustment bracket and the ear of the alternator and squeeze.

I'll try to remember to let you know how it goes.

'Course, then I'll have to tackle the NEXT problem, and the next...

Almost every alternator I've run across on Fiero's has a 19mm block at the base, right behind the lower clamp bolt. I just get under there with a 19mm wrench (open end!) and a 13mm on the clamp bolt. After lossening the upper pivot bolt, give the 19mm a good yank, and then tighten up with the other.

Heck - If the car hasn't been lowered, I don't even need to jack it up!

One thing that may halp with squeeling is the Goodyear Gatorbacks. I tried the cheaper ones, and the Dayco, and they all ended up squeeling badly. Switched to a gatorback and problem went away. They seem to have a lot nicer gripping surface. Also, i bought the commercial belt tightener and it really didnt fit all that well. Seemed that Paul's works better, it's a bit smaller, so it would seem to slip into place better. Commercial one took a LOT of coaxing to get in place with a new belt.

I think www.jcwhitney.com also carries the belt tensioning tool.

Hey... maybe that's been my problem this whole time.

Hot dog. Wish I had known that before hand. Amazing what you learn.

wtf... wait a second

So are Gatorbacks the same as Gator ribbed? See the above post to identify source of confusion.
