Sometime in the last couple of weeks I remember seeing some information and a url to a website that described a 3400 SFI swap from I believe a 1999 Grand Am into a Fiero. I don't remember if it was on the Fiero.org list or on Pennocks that I saw it. I would really like to find either that person who posted the info or the individual themselves that is performing the swap. I have some questions that I would like to ask as I'm thinking about this myself.... Any leads are appreciated....
Thanks Mike Johnson

I built up a 97 3400SFI out of a Minivan and swapped it into my 86 4-speed. Have only really driven it 3 times since I'm modding every part of the car. Ran a 14.37 g-tech, but it should be in the 13s now that I can get it into 2nd gear.
There are a couple of us, not many, who have done the swap.
Welcome to the forum, feel free to ask any questions.
Wasn't this engine also in F-bodies? I asked Chris West about this engine, because I can get those from auctions fairly cheaply. He said not to bother, too much hassle to do the swap.

The 3400SFI is the aluminum head FWD motor in chevy venture vans, grand ams and the like. As with all swaps, you're going to need to fab some mounts and stuff.

I thought the F-bodies had some kind of 3400. I want to say post '95, after the pushrod 3.4 that we use. And at some point, they went to DOHC's, right?

Well, I'm currently able to pick up a 3400 SFI from a wrecked 2002 Olds Alero (for free). I have been wanting to do this swap for a while now, but was originaly going to go with the 3.4 from the GM Performance Parts catalog since tha that would have worked directly with my Fiero ECM. But I would really like to use the 3400 since it isn't as heavy as its cast iron brother, and even a little more powerful. My biggest question is to those that have successfully performed this swap. What did you use for a ECM? How did you utilize the factory gauges? And who did you go to for the ECM's prom? Any help and information is appreciated.. Thanks
Mike

I got an aftermarket ECM. I have an Electromotive TECII. I built up my engine with a cam and other found/used little tricks and really woke up this motor!
As for guages, the speedo needed a ground to work, the coolant sensor is the Fiero's, the tach input comes from the TEC-II. The engine wiring was pretty easy, but the car to engine & ECM was tedious. You will of course need all the schematics for engine and Fiero.
Please document how you did it. The thought of a 3400 swap is on the “possible swap” list here. Would really like to know how to do it and have it work without a lot of bugs (not talking about stag beetles, flies, gnats, noseeums, fire ants or such ).

I'm still working, so I don't know if this will work, but I have an ECM from a 92 Beretta 3.1. Like Joe said, the wiring from car to ECM is the bugger.
I have to do OEM as none of the aftermarket systems I looked at will run the emissions equipment and I have to be able to pass inspection.
