Tried search but not much there. What do you all think is the BEST for hard street driving. Don't care about dust or cost. Just want pads that will really haul the car down without pushing so hard that the pedal bends, LOL. '86 GT and '87 GT.

Thanx

Started with Fiero Store's Carbomet's. Start out dusty and not bad once broken in.

But I'm happier with the Porterfield RS4 pads I have on the Indy now.

,,..The best all around bake pad is the wagner thermo quiet for any daily driver you have,,many companies copied this pad ..
..There are many Pads that will stop faster than the thermo quiets,, but none gives the all around good performance of the thermoquiet..
..Luckily this pad is available for the Fiero,,It will improve stop distance and not wear out your rotors..
..every 2 months or so Advance auto parts and other stores have a nice rebate
..The thermo quiets are $42 to $50 for 2 wheels ..
...the thermoquiets are a composite of the best braking materials.. you get your money,s worth..

The linings fell off my ThermoQuiet pads last winter when it hit about 25 below.

If you live in a climate where it gets that cold, stick with riveted pads.

Unless you love doing a brake job in that kind of weather.

Pay attention to "get them warm first." They will work less than stock brake pads in everyday driving, but when they get up to temp during aggressive driving, they'll do much better.

pop, you need to define what you mean by "hard street driving" and how often you plan on driving that hard before you can make a good choice.

I'm happy with my Thermo Quiets. Really happy. In fact, prior to going to these pads, I thought my brakes were beyond help. Now, my 22 yr old GM econobox has the best brakes of any of our cars (including a Lexus).

I just run through google looking for them, usually you can find some good deals.

I run reds in the front of my race car, and they do great stopping from 140+, but I have to stick with a semi metallic in the rear for cold performance holding my car at the line.

I am procrastinating getting some greens for my daily driver GTP, but I will get them eventually.

The Porterfield part #'s -

84-87 Front : AP 261,
84-87 Rear : AP 262
88 : AP 378 Front and rear.

This goes for the R4 and R4S. For street use I suggest the R4S. Race use the R4. This should help you locate them.

EBC site: I personally have had a hard time locating them for 84-87 fieros. 88's are not a problem.

All good brands of pads will take some abuse... Any car driving on road then stay off "performance" pads needing warm up time.

Have you restore brake system? No? then pads won't make much different. Iffy system + good pads = car has iffy brake system...

+1 for ThermoQuiet pads.
ThermoQuiet pads has a rebate...

I believe EBC only makes them for 88 Fieros. So there will be no part number for 84-87. It is too bad really.

Yup, but be prepared to replace them more often than a standard pad. They Grip better because they wear faster, they are not a semi-metallic pad so they will wear like an old organic pad.
You will also see less rotor wear when you use a non-metallic pad like the EBC red. I just wish there was a way to get them onto a 84-87 fiero other than the Grand AM caliper upgrades.

EBC Yellow if you want the best you can get, but they do not last... full on racing pads. Grand AM break upgrades can use these from what I remember.

as for ceramic pads on fiero calipers... if you want to experience what happens when you boil the water in your break lines, go for ceramic pads. they get a LOT hotter, and the fiero calipers are not designed to dissipate the heat they make. You think heat fade is bad, wait until you experience the joy of boiling break fluid. IF you are racing or driving highly aggressive, you need a real brake system upgrade not pads.

Using no name, or worse counterfeit, pads off Ebay?

Stay with known brand and source for pads.
Using any pads from Wagner etc will not wear out rotors and cause other problems.

I completely agree with theogre.

Could not find EBC's anywhere. PEP BOY'S sells them but do not have a listing for '84-'87.

Decided to try Thermoquiet's. Will post a review after a fair amount of mileage, also installing new rotors and rear calipers.

Thanx for everyone's input.

Just about every auto parts store in the U.S., plus RockAuto.com. That said, last year my local O'Reilly didn't have the Wagner Thermoquiets for my '88 Fiero in stock, and the manager wanted to charge me shipping to "special order" them. I went down the street and bought them somewhere else. The Wagner part number for all '88 Fieros is MX378 (front and rear); the numbers for the earlier year Fieros are MX261 (front) and MX262 (rear).

There is a $15 per axle mail-in rebate available on the Thermoquiet pads through May 31, 2011. Combined with the lifetime warranty (including wear out), these become $15-per-axle pads (at RockAuto prices), and they may just be the last pads you'll ever have to buy for your Fiero.

Have Thermo-Quites on the Fiero, work great.

Just did a set on Son-in -laws Gran Am. We picked them up at Advance Auto after ordering them on-line with store pickup. On-line you will get 20% off using the Code P20, when you get to the store you can get the info for an additional $15.00 ($30 total) per set on the current rebate. Pads and shoes cost us $70-$14-$30=$26.00. The also have a lifetime wear and defect warranty.

I can't speak to Wagner Thermo Quiets on a Fiero, but I have them on my Grand Prix GTP with F-body front calipers and love them! They provide great stopping power and are holding up very well so far. I'll be getting Thermo Quiets on my Fiero when it comes time to service the brakes.

Thermo Quiets installed! New rotors(stock). New(rebuilt) rear calipers. New stainless hoses.

W O W!!!!!!!!!
I actually have some real stopping power.

Mind you I only have about 45 miles on them but they are way better than the stock, even when brand new 25 years ago!

THANK ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR ADVICE!!

If you get really agressive pads, would the rotors warp, or wear down at an accelerated rate?

Good to hear! That's why I always advise Fiero owners to restore their stock brakes to original condition before even considering an "upgrade."

Maybe... Depend on the pads.

Again... Stay with known brands and source for pads.
Using any pads from Wagner etc will not wear out rotors and cause other problems.

Some "aggressive" pads will wear out the pads much faster. When pads are gone, no pads mean wreck the rotor. Products made for Racing expect users to check wear after a race.

I've been following this topic and decided to try the wagner thermo pads too.

Yes those Wagner thermo pads make a note worthy improvement over the inexpensive pads that were in the car (and the previous pads are less than a year old with low miles).
